Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Garry Lyon fails to call out Antisemitism

Just throwing out a hypothetical but if someone made a joke about Trac's mum making him a good pasta because 'We know what Italians are like' should that be called out?

Note: This is a pure hypothetical question, please no jumping to theories condoning of anti-semitic remarks.

Wrong hypothetical.

How would you feel if you made up a joke about Trac’s dad beating up Mrs. Trac because ‘We know what Italians are like’ should that be called out?

Could mount a case that even this is the wrong hypothetical.

A husband beating up a wife has nothing to do with race, it's a general society concern as a whole which is a completely different topic of discussion.

Harry Sheezel who was drafted at #3 by North Melbourne at last week’s AFL National Draft is Jewish. I am also Jewish - I was his team manager at Ajax where he played his junior footy from the age of 7. He’s naturally talented but natural talent isn’t enough to get you drafted that high. He’s worked hard for years, shown dedication and resilience and copped some racist abuse along the way. Last week, he was subjected to plenty of abuse by anonymous racist keyboard warriors on the Age online newspaper (since taken down) to the point where the AFL intervened and brought in its Integrity Department.

Unfortunately, a further instance of antisemitism occurred on Garry and Tim’s SEN breakfast show last Friday in a segment with regular caller John from Epping in which the caller brought out what is recognized as an antisemitic trope about Jews and money. History teaches us that language such as this has caused enormous pain and damage to innocent people in the past.

AFL greats Garry Lyon and Tim Watson fail to call out anti-Semitism on SEN Breakfast

Our game is rife with racism and intolerance. Just ask Eddie Betts. You can also ask the few Moslem and other minority footballers about what their communities cop from time to time.

I hope that we get a swift and responsible response from Garry, Tim, John from Epping, SEN and the AFL on this one.

And please take care with your comments.

I didn't hear the show but is it possible that Garry just didn't say anything because he didn't want to focus the commentary on a racial issue and merely wanted to talk about footy and a young fella starting out his career

As I said I didn't hear it, so I'm interested to know your thoughts - did he actually say anything to suggest he supported any antisemitic ideas or is he thought to be at fault for not "calling out" something that could offend some of his listening audience

Is that a more eye-catching hypothetical?

Threads like these divide opinions constantly and the only way we're going to get through the racial challenges we face in society is with education. I ask this kind of question to the forum to gauge opinions and seek many different points of view.

With more education and understanding of different backgrounds and the issues they face, we will hopefully know how to handle these situations a lot better as they arise. It's all well and good saying that Garry Lyon should have blasted the caller but there are still many grey areas where people are confused as demonstrated in this very thread, we need to be doing more about the learning that happens prior to the moment and calling it out (or expecting others to call out).

Will leave it at that.

That quote being taken out of context obviously gave Calwell the Edgar Britts as he addressed it in his autobiography Be Just and Fear Not  (I think that was the title). 640MD's version is pretty much as I recall.

It seems like Garry tried to get back on topic.  Then the caller was cut from the air.

Having lived in Australia my whole life, i see Aussies as getting better/more aware with racism, but by no means is it stamped out, and likely to never be entirely.  Ignorance is not an excuse these days.

While we still have powerful people like McGuire who make casual "jokes" about king-kong, it is going to be a long drawn out battle to eradicate.  Nobody is inherently born racist as far as i know.

My own parents don't believe the stolen generation actually happened.   Have had so many arguments over the years on the subject, and they are far from ignorant people.  They seem to have a train of thought that acceptance on the matter implies they were condoning it in some way.

When Kevin Rudd said his sorry speech, i applauded it.  Again though, the folks thought it was just a grab for money down the track, and they were not the guilty ones again, so they had nothing to be sorry for.   Trying to educate people who are late into their life lives is almost impossible....But we do stand a chance with future generations of being much less toxic or accepting when it comes to all things racist.

Acceptance seems to be a term thrown around a lot these days...We all need to get better at it, regardless of colour/race/religion/sexuality.  The world will become a better place the more we stamp it out.

Time to shut down this thread. Not hypothetically, but really.

It is no longer serving any purpose.

Shutting down and will only re-open if there is a response from the station, commentators, caller, the AFL and/or North Melbourne.

Thanks for your varying points of view.

Craig Hutchison of SEN has just issued this statement to the chair of the Anti Defamation Council on behalf of the broadcaster:-

Thank you so much for the conversation today.

I would like to extend a personal apology on behalf of SEN for any inadvertent offence caused regarding the segment on SEN Breakfast from our regular talkback caller, John from Epping.

As mentioned, hosts Garry and Tim recognised the inappropriate nature of the comment and made a judgement call that it was best handled and discussed with John off air.

This conversation with the caller took place prior to the program ending, such was their desire to address it.

They’ve spoken to him in fact several times since.

We are pleased with their intent to address it directly with the caller, but we do acknowledge that it could have also been addressed on air.

Garry and Tim have always stood for an inclusive show for everyone.

As a business, we pride ourselves on our standards and respect for all communities and acknowledge our role in the sports industry as leaders in this space.

We appreciate you taking the time to discuss the matter today and once again apologise for the unintended offence this has caused, and your leadership in addressing this with us and with me directly.

Kind regards,
Craig

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
