Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Can’t you take a better screenshot than that? 😂

Oliver Sestan

How did he come to still be available as a late rookie selection? Have we missed something?

I know that his best form was in junior football but how is that not different to nearly all other draftees?

Anyone who can kick as many goals as he did, even against weak opposition, is worth a serious look. Goal kicking smarts are a rare commodity.

and importantly was he with the backs or forwards?

Petty trained with the backs.

Just on Jefferson, he's a mile off. That's not a knock on him as he looks to have some nice attributes but he needs a couple of pre seasons to add some size.

A few other random observations,

BBB looked to be moving untroubled by his knee, although it was lightly taped. At one stage he was doing a lot of one on one twisting and turning with a trainer.

The funniest thing I saw was a drill that Grundy was supposed to be involved in but he was off with the fairies and Clarry had to yell at him and then take him through the drill he was supposed to do. It would have made him feel better a short time later when Choco introduced a couple of drills that were obviously new and everyone struggled. The drills were all about quick and sure ball movement and as soon as they all had got the idea Choco just started barking at them "faster, faster, faster"

On the injury front; Joel Smith appeared to be feeling his groin a lot but I've never watched him that close so maybe he has a habit. Clarry had to get the Ventolin puffer out at one stage so him leading his group in the trial is even more impressive. Clarry also left the drills at one stage and was having some discomfort around the wrist and thumb area (hope that's not from the break last year). He got it taped and went back out so should be good. Disco came off and had his left boot off and looked to have tape high on his heel but was more than likely for a blister. Of more concern to me was the the tape down the side of his foot and supporting his big toe. The trainer was manipulating the toe and asking him how it was but he did go back out. Finally, I'm not 100% sure that Pigs issue was the achillies as I saw him pointing to his calf. Could be both. Regardless he has a bit of time before the season start.

All in all I was pretty happy with what I saw for the first session back. For those of us who have been observing training for 20yrs, some of us would remember us not looking this good at the start of round one.

I almost forgot, during one of the avoiding/breaking tackle drills Melky tried to side step Grundy and Grundy rag dolled him. He put him down gently but it was great to see.

Just remembered something else. Towards the end of the session but before the sprints, a short laneway was set up with a lot of poles and they had a number of players go through and kick at goal. A camera on a tripod was set up in front of the lane to capture the kicking action. I can't remember who participated in this but it will be interesting to see if this is a whole of squad thing or just some targeted players. As Kev M was there last week perhaps he may have observed this then also?

First time I've ever seen it.

I thought about 10 players participated in kicking down the alley and being filmed. Gets them to really square the hips and shoulders to the goals, and makes for a very straight run up.

At one stage they were kicking very accurately and Williams put them another 10 metres out.

Be interesting to see if they continue with this, and if others do the program. Looks like another Williams creation.

Not entirely unexpected since he’s probably one of the very few draftees not to come out of the NAB League or equivalent systems in other states where the training regimens require a high level of aerobic fitness. By contrast, Sestan played for his school and on some weekends was driven up to Mansfield to play in a local under 18 competition. The standard doesn’t appear to have been too flash and it sounds like he didn’t train much with the country side.

The flip side is the fact that this is one of the aspects of his game, which the club will most certainly be looking at and working on over the months to come.

Everyone was still very supportive of his (Sestan's) efforts.

He has huge hips, great centre of balance prospect as will be difficult to move off his space, and so has plenty of weight (bone mass) to move.

Hoping for big improvements in his times as he gets into some full-time training.

He’d be a pretty bold selection based on that. Started to go in the right direction this last season but before that had 3 years of nothing

Perhaps. Equally, he did seem to improve as the year went on and had a couple of 20+ disposal games. Also, depends on where he played as Port SANFL didn't 'win many matches and if he was being used up forward mightn't have seen much of it.

Still, he has a pre-season to state his case.

Terrific that you got a photo so people can get more of an idea. I only get to a handful of sessions as we live in Ballarat. I don't know your situation but your reports have been tremendous, hope you can keep it up. A lot of pundits on here have bemoaned the lack of focus on goal kicking for years, so anything that helps identify and refine that is well worth the effort. Choco is a great educator but tools like this would be invaluable in getting the message across and reviewing the progress. I've been really taken with the work Australian cricketer Steve Smith has taken to modify his stance and movement and that has had an enormous effect on his return to form. I've heard some people say that kicking is something you learn in juniors and is really hard to change in later years. I think that Choco doesn't believe that for a second.

He was also pulled back from schoolies in to start training, no idea he was being drafted.

I’m sure the switch from drinking beers all day to AFL training has been a little harder than he would have liked

He'll get completely fit, well-oiled, durable and one would expect, hardened and a bit of a mongrel. His skills training has already started; he knows what is expected. His unique background relative to others is indeed interesting but he has a patent on his playing abilities worth noting. Just a little excited about this one so I am hoping he adapts well and hits the nails straight.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
