Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Every Team’s Draft Ranked

Recommended Posts

MELBOURNE

Picks (at start of the draft): 13, 37, 78, 83

Selections: Matt Jefferson (15), Jed Adams (38)

Went for two bookends in key forward Jefferson and key back Adams. The Dees had interest in exciting 194cm utility Ed Allan with their first pick after the Eagles overlooked him, but Melbourne ultimately went for the tall goalkicker in Jefferson, who’ll spend most of his first two years in the VFL but learn lots under Ben Brown and Tom McDonald in the hope he’ll one day take over from them. Adams had lots of interest from clubs, so the Dees pounced on the athletic key defender. Like Jefferson, though, he’s a project player.

Grade: C+

When you are not at the pointy end of the draft or you don't have Father-Son recruits like Daicos/Ashcroft/Fletcher then you are rated poorly because your drafting was probably looking to the future.

We overlooked Ed Allan which may come back to bite us but we have to back the recruiters who only job is evaluation of young immature players and where they will be in 3-5 years time.

How to rank the draft:

Give every club that had a top 5 pick an A or A+
Give the clubs with picks 6-10 an A or B+
Give clubs with picks in the remaining first round a B or a C+
Give the clubs with picks 20-40 a C+ or C.
All the rest give a D

Easy.

ESPN Chris Doerre continues to dislike our performance at the trade and now draft table.

r196367_1296x1296_1-1.png?w=110&h=110

Melbourne

Picks: 15, 38

Players drafted: Matthew Jefferson, Jed Adams

Grade: E

Rationale: Melbourne's first selection in Matthew Jefferson was a speculative one for the stage in the draft. Jefferson is an athletic and strong marking key forward who doesn't need a lot of the ball to hit the scoreboard heavily but will also need to start finding more of the football more often to become a consistent key forward. Adams was a surprise choice in the second round given his injury history though is an athletic defender who has played a competitive brand of football when available.

Surely that’s affirming that we just aced the draft. Knigtmare hasn’t a [censored] clue!!!

Interesting snippet here re Goodwin's role in getting the Davey twins to the Dons:

They are the two oldest sons of speedster forward Alwyn, who played 100 games for the Bombers from 2007-13. But for his four sons to be eligible as father-son picks, Davey had to reach that 100-game milestone. He was banged up at the end of the 2013 season and so were the Bombers, with coach James Hird suspended for the last game against Richmond because of their drugs scandal.

But caretaker coach Simon Goodwin – now the Melbourne premiership coach – made sure Davey reached 100 games.

Go back to some of his previous ratings of drafts. It’s pretty funny reading.

For example, in 2018 he rated Carlton a D as the worst of the draft because they selected Sam Walsh over Lukosius and Rankine. He then ranked Brisbane an A because they selected Connor McFadyen and Ely Smith, and Essendon an A for Noah Gown, Irving Mosquito and Brayden Ham.

I know it’s easy to cherry pick but these articles mean less than nothing given that there is no object measure of talent. And, without being too harsh, Doerre’s ratings probably mean less than that.

Here is his form in adjudicating the Dees draft picks from 2019-2021. Note his rating of a premiership draft haul in 2019.

If he finds it 6 times a game for 6 goals then I will be more than happy.

I know media is all about content and filling the paper each day but these assessments on clubs drafting these young players mean little.

Walking away with Grundy and Hunter plus adding the others around the fringe, then add in the 2 kpp, the 2 rucks and the unknown forward mid, plus having 4 picks in the first 36 in the 2023 draft and really only losing Jackson we have done pretty well.

Stuff and nonsense. As pointed out above there are many reasons why these exercises are pointless, the main one being that if you have a poor season you have a better chance of rating well simply because you get the early choices or if you’re lucky enough to have a couple of decent father sons then you’ve got the magic, golden ticket.

Gold Coast get a B but the background is that they sold a top 10 pick for salary gap relief and gave away a quality player to get pick 6. And for that solitary 2022 selection of theirs, they got a “B”? The jury is still out on their 2021 picks as well.

This is rubbish passing for “news”.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
