Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Do you think Lions refused us a chance to train on at Springfield or we chose not to?

And why wouldn't we fly up Thursday?.  It all looks very rushed for us given the oval is at least an hour or two from Brisbane

You'd want them having a run in the heat at the ground on Friday arvo I would have thought. It's always stinking hot out that way this time of year. It was a perfect opportunity for a 6.30pm local time kick off to hit prime time TV in the eastern states. But naaah

Would have been better for players and spectators.

I’d guess it’s that we were denied the opportunity. I can’t see us being offered such and refusing.

As I mentioned in the other GF thread, Luci, there’s cheer squad members who’ve missed out on tickets. And that’s despite having AFLW as well as Demon Army membership. Their crime? Not logging on within a nanosecond of the tickets becoming available. They’ve booked flights and accommodation, too. Our Club will likely sort something out for them as there’s only a few affected. Point being, this should never have been an issue in the first place.

There's quite a lot here lacking any kind of transparency.

Usually, the AFL are very clear about ticket allocations for a granny and how many tickets are allocated to each club, sponsors etc etc.

Haven't really seen any details around this. Have the lions been given 7500 tickets perhaps? With a couple of hundred thrown to MFC?

Have we been offered a chance to train on the ground or not?

I hope Springfield Bunnings have got some goal posts in stock.

When we play in Geelong we’re allocated a piddling number of tickets (iirc less than 1000). I don’t know why this is, but it’s a thing. I’m guessing the same applies here.

The Lions themselves haven’t had a run on the ground as yet. They’re scheduled to do so tomorrow, for the first time since the new turf’s been laid.

I can’t see why we’d decline having a run on it. Therefore my guess is that we weren’t afforded the opportunity. Which is hard to believe, but the whole “fairness” thing seems to have gone the way of many other important things.

I think the rules are different for the finals:

  • Geelong wouldn't be allowed that ticket allocation in a final.
  • For the AFL GF an even number are allocated to members of each team for each participating team.   It would seem grossly unfair if this wasn't the case for the AFLW GF.

Spot on. Pretty much grossly unfair I'd suspect but we will probably never know.

Anyways, everyone knows that the best way to grow the game is from the ground up......

By erecting corporate marquees. Then square the tickets away for their mates who don't really care about the game to come along and be fed finger food and cheap bubbles. They can chat about anything else but footy throughout the day.

I hope our footy team sends them off to their Teslas before the final siren even sounds.

I find it staggering that we may not have been offered a training run on the oval.

So I'm starting to think that we may one on Saturday...assuming we fly up on Friday.

I have to admit I’m torn on this whole stadium debacle. On the one hand Brisbane fair and square won the rights to host by just pipping us at the post for percentage. On the other hand this venue seems grossly inadequate to be hosting a grand final of a professional competition (which is what they keep pushing for). I would almost have said play the game in Sydney at Giants Stadium, that way it’s not being played at an undersized venue and incomplete ground, and the Lions aren’t playing away.

I get the decision not to host it in Melbourne, much as we would’ve loved it to be here.

Question, why were our 2 finals played at Ikon park and not Casey? Why were Tigers allowed to play a home final with a capacity of 2800?

To be made to play on a ground we have never seen, in 32 degrees, with no training run and no fans seems a bit unfair.

Hopefully we smash them and it all doesn’t matter.

We didn't play at Casey because the change rooms were being renovated.  Unfortunately the renovations were booked in prior to season 7 being announced and it was difficult to move / getting a trade these days is hard

Lucifer, bit of a correction required here.  Springfield is only around 30mins from Brisbane CBD and 45mins from the airport in good traffic.

Speaking from somewhat of a biased perspective here, having lived near the Ipswich CBD (which is closer to an hour from Brisbane), but I think the overwhelming negative commentary around this venue is a complete disservice to the opertuity it also presents for exposure of AFL in the broader Brisbane area.  The Gabba is a pain to get to from Ipswich and the western side of Brisbane (hopefull this might get better once cross river rail project is complete and the Gabba gets it's own well connected railway station), so having the Brisbane Lions training facility and social club in Springfield is a real boon for AFL and growth of the game in the side Western of Brisbane.

Ipswich, Sprinfield and it's surrounds are big population growth areas of Brisbane and have reasonable and growing senior and jnr partisipation for both men and women's game.  Having the AFLW GF to launch the opening of the ground should be an awsome publicity for the facility that money probably couldn't buy.  I don't see much of an issue with the 8,000 capasity or whatever it is.  Realistically  AFLW games rarely draw more than this and playing in front of a capasity crowd at this venue would be a better atmosphere than playing in a 3/4 empty Gabba, Metricon or Marvel IMHO.

As an asides, to highlight the potential for AFLW to grow the game beyond it's traditional base, I have a Qld born and bread rugby mate (who coincidentally lives in Springfield), who has followed AFLW this whole season to the extent of attending many home Lions games, because his daughter is into the AFLW Lions team.

If venue selection is with the ‘minor’ premiers and AFL approved the banana benders ‘appear’ to have bent over the national body. The ‘choice’ is provincial at best, and smacks of  ‘feeding the chooks’ . Joh Bjelke-Petersen should. smiling down or is smiling up from Hades?

If a cozy humid 35 degree Celsius is acceptable, a neutral venue like Marrara would be fairer. [Rain is bucketing down here]. If this is ‘show casing boating’  the Womans’ game the AFL has again triumphed.

Despite the impediments Give ‘em Hell Demons!!!

Turf conditions looked far better than a lot of afl/w games. Remember round 1 v Adelaide?

Not sure on facilities but it was very pretty and looked a lovely mix of stands and hills.

The only issue was 8,000 just isn’t enough for a grand final. Perfect for home and away up to prelims, but for grand finals they need to get closer to 15,000.

They’ll need a way to erect temporary stands like at the Grand Prix to get to that capacity.

Otherwise future Queensland aflw grand finals need to be at the Gold Coast if the Gabba isn’t available.

Interesting article on SEN from Kate Roffey.  She reckons the play was dictated by the fact the ground had no bounce.  In the training session they discovered this, and the girls were instructed, "don't bounce the ball". This completely took out the running aspect of the game, and, according to Roffey, a reason she thinks the game was so low scoring.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
