Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Dynamic Ruck Duo Max & Brodie

Demonland

Recommended Posts

The opposition have enough trouble kicking it to Max when he's the main ruck, if he can have even more licence to drop back with Brodie as the main ruck, that could make things very difficult for them.  Likewise, the unpredictability of using Max as a wepon forward or back while still having a dominant ruck in Grundy could provide some real headaches.  Luke wasn't exactly that much of a contributor in alot of games this season, particularly the longer it wore on.

Gawn and Grundy to replicate Cats strategy?

We have the best two ruckman in the land so we are just going to copy the tactics of two older part-timers?  Tactics that will be yesterday's news by 2023!

Hope Goodwin has some better ideas...

It's a strange concept to be taking inspiration from a a club that was ranked 18th for ruck combination this year..

Not only that, Blicavs is incredibly versatile that he can play in all range of positions including as a midfielder target as we saw this year, whereas Grundy and Gawn are both pure ruckman.

As @Lucifers Hero said, I hope we do have some better ideas floating around.

TBF, I wouldn't have thought having one ruck in the middle and one floating back was totally groundbreaking for us given how much we've seen Gawn float back the last few years.

Not too many options when playing two rucks.

I agree it isn't ground breaking.

But Max carries on, all fan boy, about Blicvas and Stanley sounding somewhat in awe.  Fortunately he said:  "... we can plan what we want to do but, in the end, it’s what Goody...wants us to do as well."  So hopefully Goodwin has them performing better than two makeshift ruckman and we won't be just copycats!

Yeah it reads a bit award doesn't it? I wouldn't worry too much about their performance being superior to Blicavs and Stanley though, reckon they've got them covered!

Personally I reckon Max just made this comment for something to say.  There's no comparison to the 2 scenarios and the Stanley/Blicavs model wasn't why they won the flag anyway.   Swans were next to useless and outcoached and played injured players.

But Max got us on the back page so well done to him.

Think of it this way:  2 players worth combined $2.0M a year have a coffee and decide how to play together. - coz that's what he was saying.

Yeah, good one Max - don't you just love the guy.!

Silently, I think Max was indicating that he realises that we '...have them covered...' but the example of a two-ruck combo had to be made and was so done, rather quickly utilising the tact that Mr Gawn is known for where others are concerned.

I gotta say I’m hoping that when May is kicking in if they are both out there and in position to be there let’s get them on opposite HB pockets to reduce the predictability of our kick ins. Fair dinkum I reckon it was one of our biggest failings through the year and most importantly the finals series.

Nullifying Max from taking contested marks went a very long way towards teams having repeated entries.

I actually think Grundy could work as a great pick up IF USED CORRECTLY.

We've had dominant rucks for almost the last 20 years if not longer but we've never had a gameplan that leveraged such domination.

Max and LJ added dimensions. Max with round the ground play and LJ with his follow up ground ball play.

FWIW I'd prefer to see one of the two rucks on the other side of the ground but say another 20 metres closer to our goal opening up the chip kick to Salem and then the long zone breaking kick to Grundy who should be boundary 70 metres out from our goal.

The next kick under the Goodwin plan goes to the pocket but I would like to see it squared up to CHF and then kicked to a leading forward.

Worth a try

Ultimately just not what we’ve been doing for the last 18 months, and dare I say it a bit of variety with how we exit from behinds.

I agree Pates it would be a start. I would hope that there would be enough enterprise in the coaching box to realise that there are 18 players on the ground not just rucks, any danger we could use them at kick ins. There seriously needs to be some lessons learnt from this year.

Sensible. Footy 101. The exit from the backline holds good promise, one hopes, for several fwdline variations and entries - and these may well be possible across the ground, flank to flank at we progress towards goal. Too many kicks, however, would stuff up the efforts and not have the desired outcome. SG must think about this - and then make instructions and pathways the responsibilities of nominated and supported players, where possible. Sheeeet, we have enough in the talent pool across the forward line now to make this a real 'goer'.

"...would like to see it squared up to CHF and then kicked to a leading forward...."

kicking to a leading forward turned the 2021 GF when we were starting to look done, but hasn't been repeated since.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
