Yup exactly this. Was told by a current players parents that we were “pretty badly beaten up” by the time the finals had come around.

That's a long bow Demonsome, blaming one function primarily for a poor season.

Its much more likely( I think ) the later pre season start, and during season some fitness issues plus lack of rotation of players ( when come came back either too early without VFL grounding) also an inability to train at full pace reducing in not running games out in the latter half if the season.

Not making changes giving VFL players rewards for performance also hindered our fitness issues and lack of any players generally making the AFL team. 

All that should change this season hopefully in hindsight and sensibility.

I’m neither pro nor anti loading theory (i think you're referring to loading). All I know is we were flying going into finals last year compared to flat as a tack this year. Something went wrong. Injuries a factor for sure, tough back half fixtures etc. My guess is we trained heavy mid-season similar to 2021 when in hindsight we should have kept it lighter. In hindsight, Just which players at Casey would people suggest as suitable selections to replace injured 1sts players?

JVR would have been the only one!

Weid as ruck to replace Max?  Baker to replace Langdon?  M.Brown to replace BBB?

Our backs were not the injured ones, neither were our mids. 

Brown, Kossie, Rivers, Langdon, Max, Jackson, and Jordon were the obviously injured ones in the finals.  So which Casey player would replace any of them? ( apart from JVR).

We have a serious depth problem that this scenario has shown up.  3 of the best Casey players this year are no longer at the club.  4 if you include Bedford. If injuries arise again in 2023, our situation is the same.

Hoping Goodwin has a huge mindset change over the summer because arrogantly rolling with the same 22 each week and with the same bland game plan cost us in the end. Us fans could see what was unfolding as the year went on and so did majority of the footy public. Yet, our coaching staff showed not a hint of plan B.

Sticking with the same guys each week, who some were badly out of form, sent a complete and utter wrong message to the blokes doing the hard yards at VFL level. 

Clubs worked us out easily in the 2nd half of the year with our slow ball movement and our consistency of kicking it deep into the pockets.

This is what worries me when we make no changes within our assistant coaches. I was a Stafford fan previously but surprised he survived another year. If we're rolling with the same forward entries come round 1 then we aren't winning it in 2023.

Bowey, Chandler, Bedford, Weid, JVR, Laurie, Tomlinson all could have been rotated through at different times late in the year without costing our system too much. You obviously wouldn't do too much at once, but giving the injured players that extra recovery could have made the world of difference.

Rick Lever was hobbling around in the Brisbane Semi, he wasn't right to play after his calf injury.

Depth each year changes and our newer recruits are a year older and after their first real pre season  JVR especially is ready for a season start in the big time. 

Others who should be available during the season are Taj W Bailey Laurie and maybe AMW.  Disco Turner is tracking well for a defence promotion esp if Petty can go forward.

Dunstan and Tomlinson are  reliable back ups and Schache could be the surprise of the season. Fitting Grundy in replaces Jacko and Lachie H on the wing  will still have to earn his spot but I have no doubt if his ability.

Kade Chandler deserves a go in HFF and to put extreme pressure on Spargs and ANB. Down back or even forward Bowser  is ready to star again in the big time. 

That's 11 players adding to our 22 taking out Hunty and replacing with JJ.  
 

Reality is some of our players need to be given a chance to put pressure on one that slipped in 2022 from 2021.

Stating the obvious but at the B&F discussing the season over a beer one of the players was open and honest that the club was trying to play safe football and kick long to the pocket for a contest or stoppage. In hindsight that wasn't daring or unpredictable and they will do it differently next season. This had been reviewed straight after the seasons conclusion.

I can only imagine that team structures and plans are developed over the summer, as much as we all think there should be a plan B , C or otherwise, it is obviously very difficult to change course midstream or if injuries impact. TMac is vital to the structure and neither Brown nor Weid was a viable replacement, hence the short forward line and use of Melk.

Judging our fitness program given we know now how injured we were is silly. You can plan the perfect program and change it on the go and have the greatest sports science minds in the world but when half of your finals side is playing injured and hobbling around no amount of planning is going to change the result. Comparing to Geelong is also a waste of time. We are different sides who had different luck with injury. 
 

on the not blooding enough vfl players theory. We tried a lot of them and a lot of them showed very little. We don’t have the depth some people wish we had. It could be that the bottom six did what they could but given we had a huge decrease in output from those above them due to injury, lack of continuity, short pre season etc they weren’t able to do what they did last year. 
 

given time to reflect I think we did exceptionally well to hobble to second on the ladder and it shows just how good our top ten or so players really are that we did so despite not being anywhere near our best.

I would add that there is a danger we have recruited similar style replacements (although Grundy, Hunter are upgrades) and the temptation will be for Stubborn Simon to roll out the same game plan on the basis that we were 2nd on the ladder and were ahead in all games so something must be right.

We need to change our gameplan to take account of teams that don't kick long to May and Lever

The most instructive games were Collingwood , Sydney and Geelong that completely restructured their game plan to beat us. If we don't learn from that we are cooked.

Maybe - work with me here - we just didn't have the alternatives. Oscar Baker for a banged-up Ed Langdon? I'd take the banged-up Lingers any day.

Sure, I get it, one here and there is one thing, 11is another. 
Chandler, Bedford could have offered a change up, Disco in and petty forward another. There were options, some might have even worked, at worst it rewarded good form at Casey and allowed out of form senior players to go back and find form or at least have to truly fight for their spot in the side. And really other than Gus to the guts and spargo to the wing, what was tried?

Perhaps we should have rotated more but I don't think it would have made a difference come finals time. Our best players were carrying niggles and out of form unfortunately. Trac was hobbling, Maxy banged up, Lever's ankle not right etc. etc. You can't cover for those players
