Jumper numbers for season 2023?

This might be a bit off-topic but... How/where do I get a jumper with the number on it?

I have been thinking of getting a #13 jumper for quite some time but not sure if the jumpers are sold with the number or not.

When you buy the jumper at the Demon Shop at the MCG they will iron on your number of choice at an extra charge

FWIW I think Grundy should take 37 if Chandler is changing numbers, its a ruck number of choice after 11. 

Out of interest does anyone know how they go about deciding the allocation of numbers? Is it partly player driven?

I also thought Smith might change, he has had a horrid run with injuries in the 44, he might want 29 now his old mans jumper number is available

I really like some of the suggestions for jumper number changes.

I also understand the argument of making a number "your own" too. Ben Brown has certainly made number #50 his own and I like that.

I do think jumper number #2 should be reserved for an extra special player though. It has a lot of history attached to that sacred number with Robbie Flower, Stephen Tingay and Nathan Jones having worn it.

Nevertheless, it's always fun to speculate and see who gets their suggestions correct. 😉

#33 - Oskar Baker has been delisted.

Sadly, I predicted this to happen. "Sauce" definitely had pace, I remember when he kicked 3 goals against GWS in 2020, but I felt his kicking just wasn't up to AFL standard. I wish him all the best for the future.

From now on we MUST prioritise drafting players who are elite kicks to the Melbourne Demons! I am sure Mark "Choco" Williams constantly talks to the players on our list about improving their kicking skills. Good kicking is good football!

Obviously, not all these jumper numbers will be filled as it depends upon available list spots. From my understanding there will be about 6 or maybe 7 list spots available? I am sure somebody knows the exact number here?

Lastly, I highly doubt any player would request a jumper number beyond Ben Brown's number #50, but you never know!

If you already have a jumper or you’ve bought one from somewhere other than the Demon Shop, you can purchase the iron-on numbers online or at OfficeWorks or art n craft type shops. They’re only a few bucks each but your iron at home isn’t powerful enough so you need to get them pressed professionally. I was charged $25 for this. That was four years ago so I imagine it’s even more expensive now.

I don’t think Tom would want to change numbers. He won a premiership playing in his current number.

I also don’t think Joel would want #29 as there’s the potential for comparison to his dad.

Yeah, but changing to the number 2 would be a huge honour at the MFC and if it was offered, I think alot of players would find that hard to knock back.  He'd just need to win another premiership in No.2.

Tom Sparrow could definitely be one of my picks for number 2, but I'm not 100% sure he's quite at the level that could justify such an honour.  Possibly someone like Jordan could be another future candidate, but I think either of them would need to have an absolute standout year before you bestowed the number 2 on them.  There would be alot of pressure associated with wearing that number at the MFC and also if it get's given away too cheaply and the player doesn't quite make the grade, then I think it denigrates the number and history somewhat as well.

I'm neither for or against players changing numbers.  Some it suits and I do also like it when players make a high number their own.

Some high ones I liked were 43 Guy Rigoni,  45 Mathew Wheelan.  Equally liked Neitz having 9, Stinga getting 2 and Maxy getting Jimmy's No.11.  Per my post above, there are certainly some numbers that have such a history at footy clubs that getting them represents a real honour.

Similarly, I think some double numbers are also quite good numbers, even when they are high, like 33 & 44 and if I was Joel Smith, I'd be quite keen to hang onto 44 for that reason.

11 and 31 are great but I’d argue 2 is our most special number. It’s certainly our most special open number. Robbie and Jones, two of only a small number of legends from our last 50 years.

Whilst overall I’d say numbers are overrated I think if we want to emphasise our history and culture we should give them weight. We ask players to cherish and honour the jumper, the number is part of that.

Ideally I’d start every young player in a high number and let them earn promotions, because I’d like to see someone special earn number 2

I agree #2 is indeed very special and any player would likely be honoured to receive it. But with that honour comes pressure. A lot of pressure. And players, in particular young players, already feel the weight of pressure without the attendant added pressure that comes with expectations.

I always liked 11. Looks good on the back. At Melbourne, has had a series of top players (Paul Johnson excluded) going back to Tony Anderson in the 1960s.

I'd keep 2 vacant for one more season. Save it for our top pick of next year's super draft or our big name recruit in the next trade period.

For this upcoming season I'd just wheel out 26 & 28 for our senior list draftees and 29, 33 and 38 for the rookies. Easy done.
