Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Farewell Jayden Hunt

Joel Smith who now is in line to be Hunt’s replacement.

God almighty, shoot (sic) me now!  Hey, JH is Andy Moir's nephew.  Maybe that redresses the balance.  Joel Smith could be an understudy for Lever as an intercepting third tall back.  In the acid test of Charlie Cameron, he gets turned inside out. He deserts his man to go fourth up, tends to give away silly freekicks and 50's.  Best to keep Hunt if that is the plan.

Hunt with all his speed has only been successful as fourth tallest back, which is adequately covered by Rivers, Hibberd and the next rookie.  His disposal has greatly improved but is not elite like many of the others.

So if he wants to go, good luck to him and thanks for the third round pick.

Hunt always had a real crack, and seemed like a great clubman. He never quite seemed to recapture the form he showed before getting knocked out in a crows game.

Good luck to him.

His footy was definitely better than his drawing though 😂

And yet Spargo always polls well in coaches awards and is continually selected, so perhaps plan A is not to bomb it long to the outnumber and ignore him?

I do t remember Spargo polling a single coaches vote this year.

Mrs Dw spoke to him at the B&F, he didn't "chose" to go elsewhere he was really disappointed to be pushed out.

This is really disappointing to me and in a way doesn't make sense.

We're happy to push out Jayden Hunt but then resign Joel Smith to a bloody 2 year deal who's body is quite fragile.

At worse, Jayden Hunt would still be solid depth next year.

Language is important. And the 'felt' experience of Jayden is true for him.

If he felt pushed out then that is a real experience, feeling angry, feeling sad.

However, I'd imagine the conversation didn't go like 'Jayden, we're pushing you out'.

The FD role is to perpetually improve the list, that is their intention, even with good servants, and even with people that the supporters like. Nonetheless, I am sure clear and concise information was given to Jayden (as it fits in with the culture of respect and transparency) as to why it would be good for him to explore options (as I am sure his manager was already doing this).

Overall this is a little vignette of when a club is pushing to remain top 4 for a few years to come. The trade off between being loyal to incumbents and seeking to improving lists, whilst understanding that incumbents have a right to seek greater security, or greater pleasure in roles, or role clarity elsewhere if they can.

Clearly the FD see Jayden's deficits as a bigger threat to potential premiership success than his assets.

I'd also argue that if Jayden was on the list for another year, and happened to have Bowey or someone is surpass him. Then he may be languising in the 2's and thus miss out on an opportunity to be on a list after that.

So if we get all Brene Brown - 'being clear, is being kind' - and it's actually a compassionate and humanistic act to give him that information for him to choose to seek opportunities elsewhere.

It's never nice to see quality people leave an organisation we feel they belong at. It's also no wonder he's disappointed having finally found a permanent spot in arguably the best Melbourne side ever. However, after many years at the club our coaches will have a really good idea of what he's good at, what he's not so good at, and more importantly what part of his game he's realistically likely to improve on at this stage of his career. In this industry you can't stand still.

I’d be shocked if we didn’t offer Hunt at least 1 and most likely a 2 year deal on depth player money. At a minimum the contract Smith signed and likely more. It’s not like we’ve delisted him.

His management team probably went and got the best offer available and said to the Dees get within a reasonable amount of this and I’ll stay.

If we didn’t up our offer or even pulled the offer knowing we couldn’t get anywhere near his market value then that counts as ‘pushing’ him. Doesn’t mean we didn’t want him on the list, just not at the salary spot he could demand.

Not sure, but perhaps Smith was much cheaper than Hunt? And offers more versatility?

I'd say both Hunt and Smith are more athletes than footballers, so I get where you're coming from, but reckon it's a case of Hunt wanting more money and potentially the extra year, versus Smith needing two years and less money.

I think Hunt's weakness is his lack of lateral movement.  Smith has it and offers much greater upside as a result and probably has more tricks.  Having said that if you can't get on the park you're no good to anybody.

I'd also like to address the Smith v Camerson issue.  Yes, Cameron kicked 5 goals.  For one Smith was on the bench.  Another was when Rivers handballed to Cameron when he was trying to get the ball to Smith and Cameron ran into an open goal.  Smith was involved in the other 3.  Guess what?  Cameron has kicked 3 goals on the best of opponents in one on one's and is a great player who was in great form.  Cameron kicked 3 on Hibbo in the final.

I'd prefer to have Smith to Hunt on the list.  We know Hunt's ceiling and we don't really need it.  Smith, if he succeeds, could be a really good player who offers a great deal of versatility.  Smith is higher risk for higher reward.  For where our list is we can afford that position.

Hunt and Smith are what they are.  They are not improving at their age.  They both have some athletic attributes but will never be a consistent AFL player.
Hunt is a fan fav and one of my favourites but him leaving won’t hurt us on field

Agree and I think Hunt's $350k into 2025 is the sealer.

I'd agree except we're lucky to get 5 games a year from Smith which is really my main issue with resigning for a further 2 years as well.

He was offered a contract but declined the offer and we should leave it at that, he is wanting a new start and WC offered him one.

At least he played over 100 games for the MFC so any offspring may select to play for the MFC.

It was reported on Friday that Hunt hadn't even been offered a contract by the Dees.

Sydney allegedly offered him two, so we upped our deal to keep him. Thems the breaks sometimes.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
