Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Yeah but he's not a vote winner for umpires .half the time he's out of sight under a pack and then Trac gets the ball in free air

Clarry is a reigning two time champion player of the year (Coaches'), had a better individual season compared to 2021 and Trac had a worse individual season in 2022 :

Oliver votes in 2021 - 31

Oliver votes in 2022 - 25

This award is meant to be for the best and fairest. It lost all credibility when DiPierdomenico won it in 1986 and so it continues this year - Cripps should have been suspended and been ineligible in my opinion. I wonder if Ah Chee thinks he is the fairest?

Hear hear! In fact it is not even best & fairest. It's fairest & best. Which is why a guy like Woewodin can win it. An anomaly that Robbie never did. And the Dipper thing was when the "fairest" aspect was mysteriously overlooked, seemingly for ever more.

Is this award now just another example of umpire incompetence, or that the award is just structurally wrong in that an "equivalent" player (Cripps - Oliver) in a poorly performing team is judged a better player overall because his team finished ninth and he plays with fewer stars? (or both).

The introduction of the coaches award really puts a spotlight not only on the best judged player overall in the league, but week to week nominations. How the umpires could see the best three so differently - Petracca gets mid range votes from one coach only but best on ground from the umpires. Neale gets 4 from one coach only.

Round 23 Brownlow votes:

3 - Petracca

2 - Oliver

1 - Neale

Round 23 coaches votes:

10 Clayton Oliver (MELB)
7 Kysaiah Pickett (MELB)
4 Lachie Neale (BL)
3 Christian Petracca (MELB)
2 Luke Jackson (MELB)
2 Jake Lever (MELB)
1 Bayley Fritsch (MELB)
1 Angus Brayshaw (MELB)

Just now, Clint Bizkit said:

If a team loses by more than 40 points it should take ridiculous effort from losing side player (six goals plus or 40 possessions and two goals) to even get a look in at votes.

On top of that the context of those numbers. Neale got 1 vote from Rd 23 for accumulating stats in junk time once the Dees put the game to sleep in the first half.

For christ's sake why do people get their balls in a knot over the brownlow votes, it's an umpires award always has been and will be it's no different to coaches award, media awards or any other award it's subject to their interpretation time to move on and stop being petty that Clarry did not win it, even the so called experts had Neale, Cripps as to contenders.

I’m glad Cripps won it over Neale. There’s no way Neale is as good as everyone says he is. He was pulling votes in almost every Brisbane game where he had no right to (rnd 23 in particular). Neale has a real nice guy attitude which is why I think the umps love him so much.

Honestly can’t fathom how Miocek got 3 votes against us. I thought Cox maybe, but that was just bizarre.

This happens year on year with the umpires. We really need to peg down the Brownlow to a middle tier award but the whole ceremony and red carpet just inflates the importance of it.

Cripps should have been suspended. Ah Chee missed football with concussion as a direct result of Cripp's careless action. It's pretty simple and this Brownlow will always be * to me.

However, those suggesting that the AFL knew the Brownlow votes at that time and deliberately conspired to enable him to win it are on crack.

End of the day it is not Cripps fault that the AFL refuses to in-force it's on rules "on big name players anyway" As for the Brownlow it's always been an Umpires award and a few total unknowns have won it in the past. PS you can play in a 12 goal losing side and still be best afield, just like Robbie Flower did many times.

We will never win a Brownlow due to Clarry and Trac taking votes off each other.

I dont agree with this thinking. You cant get the 3 2 and 1 vote. Somebody has to get the other votes. Did it stop Cotchin/Martin, Ablett/Bartel or Voss/Black/Aker all winning it from the same teams.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before (haven't read this entire thread because I think the Brownlow is rubbish) but I was pleased (and somewhat surprised) to read this. Maybe Gil isn't the complete company man I thought.  Maybe it was easier to write as he is on the way out.

I'm interested in this view point. Why do you think the end result should so heavily impact how are judged the best players? (I'm not trying to be a smart-[censored] here).  there are 44 players in the game, one team wins by 10 goals, I personally think a player from the losing side can get votes if he is worthy based on the performance.  If a gun plays for a average team like Miller, I think the elite performances should be rewarded

I think the AFL had their own agenda.

Firstly he's a big name player.

Secondly Carlton were on the verge of making finals for the first time in a decade and were pulling massive crowds to games

Thirdly it was clear that Cripps would feature heavily in the Brownlow. He had a great year and few at Carlton would steal votes off him, as Walsh had just an OK season and forwards don't win votes.

As we all know, when it comes to certain players and clubs, the AFL likes to turn a blind eye to enable the best financial outcome for themselves. Cripps playing increases the chance of Carlton making finals, which increases the windfall for the AFL. It's that simple.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
