Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Good Year

Not a thread about tyres.

Lots of doom and gloom on here but personally I think our season was far from a waste or a disgrace.

Backing up from a flag to win 10 on the trott at the front end (when people were hoping we'd be drunk on bathwater) and then to finish 2nd is a very decent result. Clarry winning gongs for fun, and the AA side littered with Dees. VFL side as dominant as any that I can recall.

If we had had a season like the doggies or tigers I would be carrying on like alot of the hand wringers on here. Flags don't grow on trees and you don't get a armchair ride to a dynasty just beacuse youn win one- some fair weather supporters need to realise this and get behind the boys for next year.

You're right DemonWA, it was a good year. It doesn't feel like it right now nor does it feel like a pass mark but we finally have a football team that is in games consistently and never blown out.  It would have been a pretty Melbourne thing of the past to fall off a cliff and finish outside the 8 but in the long run we are on track.

We'll be back next year. Will we win it? No idea. As long as we do everything we can to give ourselves the best possible shot then that is literally all we can ask.

I agree Layzie.

Proven foundations are in place for sustained finals now. Others years I would never have been confident e.g. the 98...2000..2002 etc run. In and out of the fianls in odd years. Ridiculous flakiness then. Not now with the team leaders and champions in place.

Improve fitness, strategy, lower injuries - things we all saw during the year -  and looking forward to 2023 for another tilt.

From best3rd 1/4 team last year to close to worst in 12 months is a key worry, but can be fixed.  Huge upside in new blood to come in.

Don't worry I'm sure we'll all be back next year. But to call people "on here" hand wringers and fair weather supporters is ridiculous considering the obvious issues with the team and the disappointing coaching efforts to try and address those issues.

To win 6 of our last 14 games for the year is disappointing.

It will always feel like an opportunity lost, but looking back through history, there are many far worse premiership defenses than what we put up.  Lots of teams who have won one then missed the 8 entirely.  And for a team with a 5 decade history of flakiness and failure, finishing 2nd really did buck the tend.

What's impotaant now though is how the club responds.  The competetion has risen to our threat of a dynasty and has made it clear we will have to earn it.  It is now up to the brains trust within the club to interpret the mountain of information and data that none of us are privvy to, to find out what went wrong and to begin to address the areas we need to improve in to take what is still on offer; a period of on-field success than many of us perhaps gave up dreaming about.

Yes a missed opportunity that has left us all saddened and frustrated But we were in every game and during those last two games everyone at the game knew that we had to make every post a winner. Yet still we all knew that we were lacking that big gun forward who could take a mark and kick those critical goals. You could feel the desperation of the crowd knowing that we were frittering away our opportunities and letting easy goals dribble through at the other end because we never had anyone back in the deep 50. Angry yes, frustrated yes but despondent No. As mentioned above there is not much that needs fixing, some new faces a modified game plan and a couple of good forwards running around in our forward 50 will be the difference and we already have two running around at Casey. Looking forward to 2023.!!!!!!

Surely you could figure out on your own that the poster meant after the H&A season?

Not to come across all @Demonstone but ‘finished’ means completed, or ended.

We didn’t ‘finish’ second. We finished 5th. I’m all about optimism, but facts are important. 👍

Wow 6 and 8 last 14 puts it into context.  That's missing the 8 kind of record.

I don't think losing 2 home finals to interstate teams can be spun as a good year. More like a great opportunity lost.

The two are not incompatible.  I believe we had an opportunity lost AND a good year.

Just for context 12 of those 14 were against teams in the 8, and an incredible 10 of those 14 games were against the other top 5 teams. Brisbane x 3, Sydney, Freo and Collingwood x 2, Geelong x 1.

I doubt that’s ever happened, or will ever happen again.

Not a good year for me

Start 10-0 and finish 16-8

1 debutant

Out in straight sets

I’m not a doom and gloom type and there are reasons for how it ended, but to me Preliminary final after 10-0 is a pass mark and we failed to achieve that

Our season very much mirrored Eagles 2007 season

It was a good year by 2019 standards.

It was a pretty poor year for the club.

One of the club's KPIs is to win at least one final in the AFL and AFLW. Just because you won a flag one year doesn't mean you get a pass the following year.

Consistently beaten on our home turf against fellow contenders.

Refused to give strong young talent a chance in the AFL.

My mate commented today that it seemed like Goodwin and co were resigned to the fact this wasn't our year by about round 20, and didn't want to compromise the VFL team's season. Hence stuck with the same team. Worst case scenario being we still play finals regardless. He is a Pies supporter and said it was obviois Goodwin just refused to make changes and simply gave this squad one last crack before losing Jackson and making some trades in the off season.

At least one win though would have been the minimum. Losing both finals in the way we did.... huge fail. We need to set high expectations. A Prelim at least was the bare minimum.

It was a good year but, to me, it was not the year we should have had nor is it an advance.

Losing 8/14 for mostly the same reason is not the result we deserved. There seemed to be a distinct lack of urgency about our losses that did not translate into any remedial action, be it player rotation, in match changes, more considered selections and preparations for the future.

But just like other teams before us, there is the hope of improvement and advancement next year.

First there is time for rest and recuperation (players, coaches and supporters) and then a new look.

I cannot wait.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
