Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Actually flagged our wasteful forward entries as far back as the Port Adelaide game when we turned what should have been an absolute thumping into just an ordinary win, didn't get much traction on here but has plagued us most of the year. Not usually a Goody critic but I think it was on or around this time that regarding one of our games he said of the last quarter" we didn't have to score to win the opposition did". Well that comment has come back to haunt him. I think AFL football is a game in which you should always be trying to score unless clinging to a lead near the end.

Three things must be addressed

Forward line structure and tactics,. Why we can't run out games when it's was a strength last year. Why did our pressure rating drop from one of the best to one of the worst.

About to watch Melbourne play in a final.  Storm that is.  Unfortunately their season has progressed like ours, falling away at the end.  Hope they step up.  Still amuses me it’s called “footy” even though I like it as a spectacle.  Footy?

There is little similarity beyond this year.

Brutally professional ,for which they are hated  and very very successful over recent seasons

Gawn apologises to fans. Calling the MCG “our fortress” is a bit of a sick joke since they haven’t all season.

“but on Saturday were lamenting they had failed to protect their “fortress”, that being the MCG, in both games.”

Swans. They deserve it, but also the good old theatrics of the Lions with their constant complaining whilst being serial offenders themselves sees my disdain for them grow each week. They are a bunch of sooks, lead by their captain and coach.

Saw this coming after the Sydney loss so I've been mentally prepared the whole week. Still gutted.

It's been said a hundred times but it all comes down to one word - fitness.

As frustrating as the game plan is to watch, if they execute it with elite fitness and mental buy-in then we would have won every game including this one. This is what Goody is counting on.

The problem is firmly with Selwyn Griffith. Despite him following in Burgess' footsteps, I've heard he has absolutely smashed them this year and it shows. He is also clearly missing the mental fitness edge too. Hopefully he learns from this and fast.

Bring on 23!

Gus should never have been on Neale for more than a quarter or so.  Sparrow and/or Harmes for mine.

As ive harped on for weeks.... Gus shouldve been returned to his 2021 premiership winning position of Wing/HF after the first few games in the middle where it was clear (within about three weeks of the experiment) that it was a one trick pony and failing the team.

Dunstan was a must in for Sparrow for mine as well.  Been in ripping form at Casey of late.

It was also clear by half time last night that Rivers was cooked.  Goody refused to swing the medi sub axe and bring Smith on as he as done all season, at the detriment of the team and club.  You need to bend and tweak every rule you can as a coach wherever possible.  Goody needs to stop talking the RUTHLESS talk and start walking it himself.  And not just in this example, needs to stop playing faourites and base more of his changes on blocks of form, rewarding those at Casey who deserve it and asking more from anyone in the 22 who needs the break to work on specific issues etc.

Season 2022 will be remembered as a Massive Opportunity Lost for this club.

Last night's result was nothing less than atrocious.

Totally agree. On form (and today's performance), there were a handful of players that should have been the sub ahead of Smith too.

Geez I enjoyed watching Casey today. A high performing, cohesive team. Bittersweet

Losing every game in almost identical fashion ....

tailored their game to implement virtually identical strategy and tactics. It’s like there is a handbook out there on how to beat Melbourne. Just tick off the boxes. Our coaching staff paralysed by their own over confidence and hubris.

Fabulous post JCB.  There were other issues as listed like the low pressure levels, especially inside 50, lack of decent delivery inside 50, very poor / slow transition off HB far too often, lack of a 2nd tall forward, smalls not working hard enough to get to the drop more often (front & square), default kicks to the pocket & bombing far too often etc etc etc.

But you also have to look at our game style / methods which are or may have been surpassed by other team's styles as we speak such as the Pies & the Swans.  That doesn't mean we throw the baby out with the bath water but we should at least go back to the drawing board, pick the whole system apart and re-assess every aspect of ball movement as well as offensive and defensive methods prior to the start of the pre-season.

Incredible that players, especially Leaders, are still running their mouths.  Even after a diabolical finals series.

Goodwin needs to get a hold of this cheap rubbish / nonsense talk and shut it down well before 2023 commences.

Since 2011 when Geelong won the flag, the record of reigning premiers is as follows:

2012 - Geelong loses elimination final after finishing 6th in H&A

2013 - Sydney loses prelim after finishing 4th in H&A

2014 - Hawthorn wins flag

2015 - Hawthorn wins flag

2016 - Hawthorn loses semi final after finishing 3rd in H&A (straight sets)

2017 - Western Bulldogs finish 10th - 11 wins

2018 - Richmond loses prelim after finishing 1st in H&A.

2019 - West Coast loses semi final after finishing 5th in H&A

2020 - Richmond wins flag

2021 - Richmond finishes 12th - 9.5 wins

2022 - Melbourne loses semi after finishing 2nd H&A

Nobody has come runner up the year after winning a flag in this period; two sides have made a prelim and lost; three have bowed out at the semi final stage; one in the first week and two didn't qualify to defend.

Our performance was about the "average" for a defending premier over this period.  A very hard draw, untimely injuries to important players and perhaps a lack of imagination (or too much faith) from the coaches box all contributed to the seasons result, and should provide some confidence that we will be in the frame again next year.

Great post, they're hard to win and even back up with good years.

Langdon would have to have kicked the most out-on-the full balls of any player this year. Would be genuinely interested in that stat.

I rate his overlap run, but like so many of our players, his deficiencies cancel out so much of his good work. Like Petracca with his goal kicking both set shot and on the run.

Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver and Viney need to halve the amount of blind bomb kicks they do both out of centre bounce and around the ground. The amount of opposition turnover scores that result from those kinds of kicks would be of interest me. It absolutely kills me how much composure those guys lack at times.

Many issues but our unforced errors from so many of our top-liners really kill us and have contributed to our moments of loss of momentum as well as our inability to really put teams to the sword when we've been up in games.

We simply need to add more finishing, composure and kicking skills to our squad. We are too one-dimensional as a midfield and half-forward unit.

Let's get this out of the way because in the end this was one of those 'don't know where to look' losses.

- Lions won their first game at the G since 2014, gross

- Zorko got revenge, I hated this rematch being so close to our last game so much.

- Fagan wrote the wrong and now is 3 and 5 in finals.

- Faded out again, it sucked.

- Beaten by the team we had the wood over. Again, you numps who thought this was a gimme please turn in your cards.

Those are the honest points out of the way now for the positives.

We always needed two tall key defenders. Without the likes of Joel Smith or even Turner, Petty always had to fill that role.

Also, I bet that if it had been Petty instead of Lever in that last bizarre play it wouldn't have cost us a goal. Swings and roundabouts. But can see Ben Brown playing out his contract at Casey.

The goal  and 50 m against Lever didn’t matter, since it was  too late for us to get 2 more goals at that point.

BUT…… I don’t think it was a correct decision, because…….. when Lever put the ball on the ground he was being tackled, but where? Below the knees.. i.e.  a trip. I think that’s why he did his block.

If Pickett hadn’t missed that gimme a few minutes earlier, I reckon we’d have won. We were coming back strongly, despite all the posts about our lack of fitness at the end.

I don't share your view John. Maxy was saying in effect that we need to build the G as a Fortress and have failed to do so and especially these 2 Finals.

Good logic as Simon admitted about our frailties which he didn't admit really that the attempt on the run was a very half hearted and botched job.

A few serious team selection changes were  not done as well as game day moves rotations or flexibility with our sub.

Further more a positive outlook for the 4th quarter not just defending leads was totally necessary and confusing.

In addition playing of some players with minor injuries or even more serious ones did not reap rewards at all over the season.

We we're not far off in 7 of the games we lost but the above plus from now inconsistency from many role players hurt Our results.

Ridiculously conservative selection also mitigated our results and a change in our support Coaching staff seems necessary especially the forward line.

We shall wait and see.

Yeh well this season will surely be a wakeup call, probably the reason teams fall away after a flag. We could come back even stronger next year in a similar way to 2021 now that 2022 is out of the way.

The only concern is with Goody, I hope the coaches come to their senses and switch up the way we attack because it just isn't efficient enough and fix up our defence off opposition transition, killed us all year...

AND That only concern about Goody is a huge one, because given his reluctance to change, nothing will change! If we continue to do the same thing next year re game plan, not only will we struggle, we wont make the 8. Ponder that for a second and then tell me what then??

Absolutely agree although we might just scrape in to the finals with another ordinary result (eg;  one win then out the next week, no PF appearance).

Anything other than a PF this season should be viewed as a severe Fail mark for the club as a whole.

We were just beaten by a visiting club in a semi (a level down from the PF) that hasn't won a game at the G since 2014 with a massive home crowd advantage, who had no genuine serious ruckman and their best KF AWOL.

Anyone (Club Land Goody & the FD included) thinking we will just reset and pretty much go around again next season as we are, with just few tweaks to personnel and/or minor or no tweaks to game style, are kidding themselves.

We failed to make a PF as predicted and at least three of the top four clubs have passed us in a convincing manor.

This club needs to do a full review of game style, offensive methods and defensive methods as well as serious additions, especially at least one other tall key forward coming through either through the draft or trade and an attempt to pick up a very classy ball user deliverer through the middle or off HB.

In addition the forward line plus inability of mids to connect with it has been a massive fail all season and are the two areas that need to come under the most scrutiny.

Only my view and may not be available anyway, but i'd be going after Gary Ablett Jnr big time as the new forward line/mid field connect coach OR at the very least as an additional specialist forward craft/kicking coach.

If we also roll into 2023 with same set up up here (forward coach) we will be doomed to another year of no PF and a back to back fail with further teams, like the Blues and potentially others like the Dogs and Freo, passing us by.

There's a worrying 'she'll be right' complaceny creeping in and it needs to be hit on the head with a serious review then action required if we're to adjust, make approrpiate fixes/tweaks/list changes, before heading into the 2023 campaign.

I hope Kate is seeing it this way also and not still basking in the 2021 glory with her rose coloured glasses on.  Fingers crossed!

Absolutely right.  With < 2 minutes left and we had just goaled, within reach of a win no way he would want a stoppage.  Ditto no way he would want to run down the clock and hold up play.  The ump was a bit whistle happy there with the 50m.

It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
