Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Goodwin's position is now untenable. The responsibility for that loss and others throughout the season rests firmly at his feet. You cannot blame the players or injuries or bad luck; it's appalling, arrogant coaching. An inability to react and adapt  to what's right in front of your face. No contingency just stubborn whipping the dead horse for some egotistical high.

I am prepared to put forward my share to pay Simon out. If the rest of the dissapointed members feel so inclined, it would be easy to raise the cash and it would mean not having to put up with that crap for the remainder of SG's contract.

Of highest importance is the mandatory elevation and securing of Adem Yze to Senior coach ASAP. We must not hesitate as he is likely to go elsewhere should we dawdle. This is a crucial moment in the clubs history.

A cleanout of all support coaches so that Yze might coose his own dream team.

At the very least take a poll of all the members who have paid to endure that garbage as to their preference of coach going forward.

Rage post of the year. Thanks for the chuckle

P.S you forgot to mention it but I'm sure you want to burn down the G as well

Um . . . . because BBB helped us win our first premiership in 57 years. Quite frankly, I don't give a FF if BBB never gets another kick. He stood up in a grand final and we won a flag. He'll always be a Demon premiership player and forever a legend of the club.

To say nothing of the fact that earlier on here here was a running debate about whether TMac was better than Weid or not.

Short memories in the silly corner.

BBB may well be finished but..

"What you said.." and wasn't he 2nd of the Bang Bang Bang...BBB!"

The fact that BBB has a confirmed degenerate knee, and we have JVR, T Mac and possibly Petty as legit forward options, may well the spend for him.

People forget how crucial BBB was in the 2nd quarter of the Grand Final - the only goal kicker when the tide was turning.

I think people are happy to jump all over him because he’s relatively new as a Demon. He’s had to battle a knee injury the entire time he’s been with us and been played as a single key forward against the best defenders every week. Will defend BBB any and every day.

What really irks me is that with 2 minutes left, we played more attacking than we had done all year. With the game gone, that’s when Goody finally makes a change……………too little too late. At half time we could all see that our tall target up forward was failing dismally.

The coaching group needs to relinquish this stubborn vice-like grip on trying to defend, and adopt a more attacking game style. We were boring for this entire finals series. New tactics are needed, as we have the offensive weapons, we’re just trying to suffocate it out of our game.

Almost entirely agree with this post, well written.

Not sure if you would agree but I thought our first quarter last night demonstrated some really daring ball movement, players had no hesitation to bite off the inside 45 into the corridor and we had pace on the ball coming out of d50.

Steven even sent a kick in up the guts which also led to another inside 50 (and probably a behind).

But we went into our shells from this point forward, long down the line, and long into the forward pocket.

A directive from the coaches? a mental thing within the playing group? lack of confidence? I've got no idea why but if we had maintained that throughout the game (among other considerations), could have gone differently.

About to watch Melbourne play in a final.  Storm that is.  Unfortunately their season has progressed like ours, falling away at the end.  Hope they step up.  Still amuses me it’s called “footy” even though I like it as a spectacle.  Footy?

Yeah great. My issue isn't with BBB, it's having a method of forward entries that doesn't allow our key forward to play to his strengths. I hope he gets plenty more kicks and we allow him to play to his potential, otherwise nothing will have changed.

I have a theory, and I don't think that fitness levels has anything to do with it.

Our game plan revolves around winning contests and locking the ball into our forward 50. It requires an enormous amount of effort on the part of the mids and the forwards. With the talent we have, we build up a sizeable lead and yet invariably concede late goals before half time. The scoreboard at half time rarely reflects our dominance.

At half time Goody addresses the players and tells them that we have the game on our terms. The opposition coaches of better sides will tell their players that it's impossible for Melbourne to continue at that intensity, and a 3-4 goal deficit is not insurmountable.

Once the opposition get within a goal or two in the second half, it's almost game over. But I think it's more psychological than physical.

I honestly believe that our players are not fully invested in our negative game plan, because they are not getting scoreboard reward for effort. Once that opposition have neutralised the game around the contests and the scoreboard, it all becomes too hard for our players to go again.

The players have an ego/arrogance after winning last years flag. But they're coached to defend rather than show their talents. I think the players have lost the motivation to grind a game for 120 minutes on the back of the 2021 flag.

Coaches like Paul Roos and Ross Lyon have limited shelf life at one club. Their game plans are too mentally gruelling on the players. If Goodwin wants a long tenure at the Dees, he needs to look at John Longmire, who's evolved from a negative coach to a positive coach. He's weeded out the "try hards" from the team, and replaced them with skilful players who also give effort.

And after listening to all of the Burgess/Brukner podcasts in that last off-season, Burgo's role in the mental side of the game cannot be understated.

John Longmire: 1 premiership, 50% win/loss finals record.

Simon Goodwin: 1 Premiership, 71% win/loss finals record.

Simon:

  • walked into a rabble,
  • doesn't have the NSW academy at his disposal,
  • doesn't have a home base,
  • isn't coaching a club that has AFL's tacit approval to cheat,
  • doesn't have a 3 million person market all to himself underwritten by the AFL.

He's going alright just at the minute I would have thought.

Why? Brisbane’s team is filled with brain dead morons. Their captain is a scumbag who doesn’t even have enough respect for his wife to keep his tiny manhood in his pants, let alone enough brains to respect his opponent.

First goal of the 4th quarter too from a contested mark with 2 dogs flying at him. 89-59 looks a lot different than 83-65, if it goes down the other end from a spoil.

And we didn't even discuss that mark and goal in the 3rd lol.

Yep, exactly...so the method of entry and general forward strategy needs to change. We're not playing to his [censored] strengths or the small classy forwards that could benefit from more space in the forward line.

Since 10-0 we have lost 7 games inc 2 x Finals after leading at 1/2 time and have faded out in the second half badly, either  Burgess leaving & Griffiths who worked under him threw out  his programme or the players just decided can climb the mountain again. Goodwin faith in his players and not making any changes after the swans loss and taking in injured players clearer backfired and seeing some of the talent in Casey highlighted we need some fresh injury free  players to change it up e.g.  Chandler, Dustan, Bedford, Van Rooyen , whilst couldn't play all of them but at least 2 changes were needed & some new spark in the Fwd line.

The missed opportunities going forward and missed kicks to nothing or to a contest having free players available was a joke & summed up our finals!

Lets hope this group don't fizzle away and just hang around finals

Those folk are probably not as invested about writing vitriol about players and coaches as some others are, nor the need to respond to try to convince those that ARE writing vitriol to think differently perhaps??

From my vantage point, the disappointment in this thread is understandable, the entitlement and subsequent repercussions required is absolutely astounding though.

So just putting this out there.

Is it worth trying to blood the Weid as a backman to replace Petty.  Is he capable?  Has he played much down there at Casey and if so how has he gone peoples?

I did see him play one very good match across HB vs Box Hill a few years back and he was impressive that day.  But one day doesn't make a summer & it was only VFL.

But let's just say we can do a McCartney with Weid... IF....could we then send Petty forward?  Imagine a Petty and Macca forward line with JVR starting to pop in on occasions for brief cameos, or maybe more than a few cameos, in 2023.  BB a back up to Petty, Macca & JVR if they go out due to injury and JVR is NQR for whatever reason in his debut season.

Since 2011 when Geelong won the flag, the record of reigning premiers is as follows:

2012 - Geelong loses elimination final after finishing 6th in H&A

2013 - Sydney loses prelim after finishing 4th in H&A

2014 - Hawthorn wins flag

2015 - Hawthorn wins flag

2016 - Hawthorn loses semi final after finishing 3rd in H&A (straight sets)

2017 - Western Bulldogs finish 10th - 11 wins

2018 - Richmond loses prelim after finishing 1st in H&A.

2019 - West Coast loses semi final after finishing 5th in H&A

2020 - Richmond wins flag

2021 - Richmond finishes 12th - 9.5 wins

2022 - Melbourne loses semi after finishing 2nd H&A

Nobody has come runner up the year after winning a flag in this period; two sides have made a prelim and lost; three have bowed out at the semi final stage; one in the first week and two didn't qualify to defend.

Our performance was about the "average" for a defending premier over this period.  A very hard draw, untimely injuries to important players and perhaps a lack of imagination (or too much faith) from the coaches box all contributed to the seasons result, and should provide some confidence that we will be in the frame again next year.

Excellent, rationale post..

Out of that list i’d be mortified if we turn into the next West Coast who have fallen off the rails.

There’s a lot of work to be done for us to forge ahead but I’m confident we have most of the pieces in place.

The fitness is the most pressing issue IMO. You can’t argue that there isn’t a correlation between fitness issues and poor 4th quarters.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
