I am worrying that Goodwin is going the way of Ross Lyon. Lyon unlucky not to get a flag but burned out both Saints and Freo quickly due to his inflexible game style and playing same favourite players with no regeneration.

I was really hoping for everyone that couldn’t get to the GF last year in Perf would be able to get to see one this year. 
 

We need to fix our offence something fierce otherwise this window will be wasted. 
Another couple of years will see the likes of Gawn and May in particular finished and that will leave a gaping hole to fill. 

Let’s go and get ourselves a big hulking forward rather than the flimsy vegan and mid size ones we have and we’ll be set.

Ok here we go. It's been 3 hours, enough time to get all the crap out of our system.

Edit: Fell asleep and only just posted now.

It was approximately 1 week and 6 hours ago that we were on the eve of a finals series with our flag hopes still relatively high. Oh, how, the, mighty, have, fallen!

10-0 to start the season, top 4 for a lot of the year, top 2 for a lot of the year and have bowed out in straight sets. There's no way around it, this is crap. Injuries took their toll, we were behind the 8 ball when guys like Lever played the whole year through the pain barrier. 

Still can't get the head around it, it's a joke. The loading theory is dead, we wasted so much time talking about it and come finals time we looked like pi** fitness wise. Running on top of the ground my foot, what a let down. 

All the people last week who celebrated when Brisbane won because it meant we had a 'guaranteed prelim' hang your heads in shame. Nothing more that you can say on that but you gotta wear that. 

Very hard to summarise the feeling right now. Third top 4 finish under a top 8 system and we've managed to tick off the straight sets exit off the bucket list. Yay. Nothing more to add right now.

Gus should never have been on Neale for more than a quarter or so.  Sparrow and/or Harmes for mine.

As ive harped on for weeks.... Gus shouldve been returned to his 2021 premiership winning position of Wing/HF after the first few games in the middle where it was clear (within about three weeks of the experiment) that it was a one trick pony and failing the team.

Dunstan was a must in for Sparrow for mine as well.  Been in ripping form at Casey of late.

It was also clear by half time last night that Rivers was cooked.  Goody refused to swing the medi sub axe and bring Smith on as he as done all season, at the detriment of the team and club.  You need to bend and tweak every rule you can as a coach wherever possible.  Goody needs to stop talking the RUTHLESS talk and start walking it himself.  And not just in this example, needs to stop playing faourites and base more of his changes on blocks of form, rewarding those at Casey who deserve it and asking more from anyone in the 22 who needs the break to work on specific issues etc.

Season 2022 will be remembered as a Massive Opportunity Lost for this club.

Last night's result was nothing less than atrocious.

Yep, wouldn't necessarily change the result but it would hopefully build depth and experience in the footy club overall which is equally important.

Our game plan revolves around winning contests and locking the ball into our forward 50. It requires an enormous amount of effort on the part of the mids and the forwards. The players have an ego/arrogance after winning last years flag. But they're coached to defend rather than show their talents. I think the players have lost the motivation to grind a game for 120 minutes on the back of the 2021 flag.

Coaches like Paul Roos and Ross Lyon have limited shelf life at one club. Their game plans are too mentally gruelling on the players. If Goodwin wants a long tenure at the Dees, he needs to look at John Longmire, who's evolved from a negative coach to a positive coach. He's weeded out the "try hards" from the team, and replaced them with skilful players who also give effort. 

And after listening to all of the Burgess/Brukner podcasts in that last off-season, Burgo's role in the mental side of the game cannot be understated.

Goodwin is a players coach. Now they can change tactics and go with the wind there BUT they stick to players for years past their ‘use by’ date because the economy isn’t built around performance, it’s built around commitment and that can also be a problem that needs to managed and reigned in.

This might be pop psychology but I do wonder whether confidence did morph into hubris this year.

Lingers’ pot shot at Collingwood, Maysie’s sledging of team mates, going to sleep with decent (but reversible) leads in the bank, and talk of winning one on the MCG in front of our fans before a ball was kicked in anger to me were worrying signs.

Lets keep this very direct and too the point, numerous posters have laid it bare and it rings true. We paid the price for not rewarding the Casey players form this year.

Players were playing injured throughout the year and not properly rested and rehabed.

In game tactical manoeuvres were not executed, our F50 connection absolutely non existent, generally utter rubbish really.

The only positive this year has been Casey.

The MFC has failed miserably this year and the Coaches and Fitness Department have to accept what they have coming to them.

i would like to nominate myself as our new forward coach at half the price of the current guy, how hard is it to say kick it long into the pocket. Job done and i can even do that from home.   I cannot recall when we last played 4 quarters of football, even last year we had handy leads to see them evaporate and opposition take the lead, but our 3rd quarters were some of our best football, gawn/Jackson to oliver or trac, who would either handpass to each other or boot long and reasonably direct into an open forward line. i dont recall too many of those chains in the last few months. Even when we beat the lions last time we lost the last quarter by a lot. we seem to take our foot of the pedal,  but last year and even earlier this year we were able to reassert ourselves, this latter half of the year we just seem to stop. what has been our biggest winning margin compared to other sides. We have a massive number of inside 50's so we cannot say we are purely defensive we have lots of chances but our forward approach is crap. BBB is a goal kicker but not able to take a mark in a pack of 6 or more. one on one or leading is his strength, we are trying to make him play our kick to the forward pocket game, that is not his style or how to get value out of him. We have too may players who move the ball on too slowly. Sparrow for one constantly gets the ball and ignores simple short passes to open players, he instead holds up play and eventually kicks long down the line. not great football.  though i must admit some of our short passing has been pretty poor. Goody unfortunately does not seem to like to change things, does not change our playing style, does not change players even when they are not playing well, does not make a lot of changes in a game to change their flow. We have a brief window of opportunity with the great playing group we have and new players coming through if Goody does not learn to manage change better then we will miss that window of opportunity.

I beg to differ, In his "Golden Years" at North he had Larkey a 198 cm 45 goal + CHF as his foil, and at his best matches at Melbourne he had TMac. Ben is not a pack marking CHF and needs another big body to take some heat. Who has he had this year? ANB, Jake, Spargo, Kozzie, Fritz, and more recently sometimes Max. We are so underdone in height in the forward half- given our game plan is to simply "bomb it to packs"

As there's no next week i doubt they'd risk him today Willmoy.  Maybe in the GF if we get through but even then.  I could be wrong though and he might wanna be part of it and be sticking his hands up.

Losing every game in almost identical fashion indicates to me that the opposition are not better teams but is because of our inflexible game plan and tactics. The better opposition clubs as well as lesser clubs despite their differing game styles and talent bespoke tailored their game to implement virtually identical strategy and tactics. It’s like there is a handbook out there on how to beat Melbourne. Just tick off the boxes. Our coaching staff paralysed by their own over confidence and hubris.

Stafford can go, he's not up to it.  Goodwin needs a rocket as well.  This team is capable of blowing teams away (we've seen it) but we persist with not using the corridor.  Why?

Meanwhile, the other good teams do use the corridor.  Makes no sense as to why we don't

From the corridor we hit the flanks or pockets.  It's garbage football

We lost 8 of our last 14 games. Teams with that sort of record are usually down the other end of the ladder

 

2 points that I imagine the FD would provide when attempting to justify why they have persisted with a clearly broken method.

 

a) the lack of a CHF does open up a greater risk of turnover goals if we play more direct. It also obviously provides challenges with the kick to the pocket method

b) maybe we don’t have enough players with the smarts and foot skills that Syd and Geel do, to consistently play the more attacking game style through the corridor

 

Now that the season is over, it is time to take the following steps

a) Internally acknowledge the “method” is broken

b) identify what types of players we need to switch to a more efficient game style (method). Both current players in different positions, and drafting/trading for others

c) Identify exactly why the 2nd half fade-outs occurred and implement a plan to fix it. 

d) Spend the pre-season integrating and training up the players in their new roles. Ie Does Smith train as a back, Petty forward or vice versa? 

Be no break for the FD I assume. They need to get on top of this asap, or otherwise straight sets will lead into even bigger problems next year.
