Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Howes, JvR, Laurie and either Moniz Wakefield/Deakin Smith could add some youthful exuberance if they have great pre-seasons.

Might also be worth targeting some 23 to 25 year olds with mature bodies that can withstand Goodwin's physical game plan. Maybe Bergman, Georgiades (who we liked in his draft year) etc.

If Spargo, Neal Bullen, Rivers, Hunt and to a lesser extent Sparrow and Salem are anywhere in our best 22 we will be going Backwards

I agree with you on Spargo had a very ordinary year, don't know what he gives us. Disagree on Neal-Bullen makes mistakes but is a heart and soul player, you know what you are gonna get from him. Wouldn't give up on Rivers yet had a very ordinary 22 only in his 3rd year. Agree with you on Hunt don't know why they signed him again. Ordinary user of the ball no real football smarts. Sparrow didn't come on like he was supposed to was lucky to be in the team, thought Jordon was better but they chose to drop Jordon. Salem was nearly AA in 21 had a terrible 22 I'm hoping like everyone else that he played injured.

I think you have to change at least 5 players from your best 22 every year. We only changed 2 this year and that was Hunt and Melksham for McDonald and Bowey. I think that's a reason why we struggled at the end of the year not the only reason but one reason. Too complacent.

My best 22 has Bowey, Jordon, van Rooyen, McDonald, Grundy, Chandler, Bedford and J.Smith as fresh faces replacing

Hibberd, Hunt, Jackson, B.Brown, Sparrow, Melksham, Rivers and Spargo.

That might be too many changes but I think it's a start better than playing Goodwin's same olds.

If I had to change 5 it would be

B: Lever, May, Bowey

HB: Brayshaw, Petty, Salem

C: Langdon, Petracca, Jordon

HF: Neal-Bullen, van Rooyen, Pickett

F: Fritsch, McDonald, Gawn

FOLL: Grundy, Oliver, Viney

IC: Harmes, Sparrow, Spargo, Rivers

List changes:

Retirements:

Ben Brown   Mitch Brown.

Melks

Hibberd

Dump:

Rosman, Spargo, Jackson, (of his own free wil) Tomlinson, D Snith and J Snith.

Lovely.

Of your ‘Dumps’ - J SMith has got another two years just a couple weeks ago, D SMith is on the rookie list, and Spargo and Tomlinson have 3 and 1 years left respectively so have to be traded.

And for Ben Brown to be ‘retired’ it will cost $1m for the final two years left on his contract.

So unless you know something we don’t, I think we can try to be respectful to people.

Well we know that Majak Daw retired earlier in the year.

Furthermore, we now know that Luke Jackson has sadly requested a trade back to WA.

The question is....who else will be leaving the Demons in 2022?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Sam Weideman is traded. I think his time is up at the Demons and it is time for him to have a fresh start at a new AFL Club.

Whether or not Jayden Hunt stays is also an interesting scenario as I think he is now a free agent?

In my view, I believe that Oskar Baker, Fraser Rosman, Mitch Brown and Judd McVee will all be delisted.

•    Blake Howes Now here’s a player who is versatile; he can play as a tallish winger or as forward who wasn’t far off senior selection before he injured his foot early in the season. Will benefit from a full pre season.

•    Bailey Laurie He has now spent two seasons at the club and was also close to stepping up for senior selection, particularly after one outstanding 30+ possession game at GMHBA Stadium for Casey against the Cats. Hoping for a breakthrough in 2023.

•    Fraser Rosman Another two year player with height, pace, a good engine and versatility. Unlucky with injuries.

•    Jacob Van Rooyen  We’re all waiting with bated breath to see how this 194cm key forward with vice like marking grip, the strongest 18 year old Tom McDonald’s ever seen and boundless enthusiasm goes when he finally gets a senior call up.

•    Taj Woewodin Son of a club Brownlow Medallist and an emerging midfield talent.

•     Judd McVee Rookie from WA who spent most of his time in defence at Casey.

•    Deakyn Smith Another rookie with two seasons behind him, learning the back pocket ropes (mentored last year by Neville Jetta).

•    Daniel Turner I’m including him here because the dashing defender is virtually a recruit having spent not much more than half an hour in AFL ranks (and it was an impressive half hour).

•    Andy Moniz-Wakefield A Next Generation Academy player from the NT who the Demons managed to capture and who has plenty of flair and X Factor. Fingers crossed but he could be very, very good.

It's good to see that we have these youngsters in reserve waiting for a call up but football's a tough gig. Anything can happen in the period coming up and one or two of those players might not be on the list next season.

I don't see the upside in McVee, Rosman or D.Smith. I'm not sure why we should persist with any of these (and yes, I know some are contracted for next year). Daw has gone, and unfortunately M.Brown will follow, although hopefully we can keep him at Casey.

Moniz-Wakefield and Howes will be given more time. Laurie would want to improve significantly in his third year. I'm hopeful on Woewodin and Van Rooyen could be anything.

Baker will go. I'd be happy to see J.Smith moved on as well given his lack of durability. Weideman probably stays as emergency ruck backup given that the club is averse to recruiting in this area. At least one of Bedford / Chandler will hopefully be traded. Unfortunately Spargo won't go with them. If Hibberd and Melksham get new contracts, it should only be after the pre season draft. I'm happy to keep Hunt.

Clearly the key is to turn Jackson into a couple of players who can help improve us for next season and to boost our key forward and ruck stocks.

Isaac Keeler from North Adelaide definitely looks like an exciting prospect.

Perhaps he would be a suitable replacement for Luke Jackson?

Fancy and skilled but incredibly lazy. Personally don't rate him, which is why he's dropped from top 5 expected last year to late second rounder now.

That’s what they said about Goodes look how he turned out 198 cm indigenous players don’t come around often plenty of upside

Ch, Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes ...

We need a lockdown defender who's strong quick and has sure ball handling - not asking for much am I? We were very shaky when the ball hit the deck in the back 50.  I think getting Bowey into the 22 and Salem back to full fitness will help but they're not the lockdowns.

All 4 PF teams have dangerous match winning small-medium forwards: Stengle, C.Cameron, Elliott and Papley.  Hibbo has done very well but he's on his last legs, I don't think even @Lucifers Hero has the confidence that Jayden Hunt can go with them, Joel Smith has the speed and size but is a concern with his ball handling and is always injured, Trent Rivers has the speed and size and is a possibility but he'd need to improve his defensive work and ball-handling, I think James Harmes has the attributes but we tried him in defense a few years back and he was a failure there.

I think our other major problem is that we can't afford to have ANB and Sparrow in transition possession chains because neither of them are clean enough.  It would be nice to replace both of them but that's probably not going to happen, ANB is in the leadership group and the FD clearly rates his work ethic.  Sparrow is more tradeable anyway - both Adelaide and Port could be interested with Sloane and Boak near the end and Crouch on the outer.  I think getting JJ into the 22 in Sparrow's role would be a big help - he's much cleaner than either of them and we also have Chandler in the wings too.

As posted elsewhere I think Tomlinson should look for more opportunity, we've lowballed Jayden with a 2 year offer - someone will offer him 3 or 4 years, Toby Bedford would have signed if he's going to - he's off for more opportunity, and as above, I think Tom Sparrow is tradeable.  There's some 2nd and 3rd round capital there for a lockdown defender - but I don't know who we should target - suggestions welcome ...

I think Will Hamill at Adelaide could be a handy pick-up, he's got some size, pace and is a nice left-foot kick.  Victorian too.  He has had concussion issues which is a concern.  I don't think he'd necessarily solve our lockdown issue but I think he could be a decent trade for Sparrow.  He's contracted to the end of 2024, but so is Sparrow.

A wise coach once said that even a premiership side needs to turn over players from year to year. He suggested that you needed to bring in up to five new players to freshen up a side. We brought in two - Luke Dunstan for a handful of games and Daniel Turner who in the end played half a game.

There wasn’t much inventiveness in dealing with our problem areas and, in fact, we kept repeating the same failed tactics that just about every decent coach in the competition had worked out and in the end, exploited.

The time to bring youth into the side was in Rounds 9 and 10 - just one or two players of the likes of JVR and Bailey Laurie just to see how they fitted into AFL football. Our opposition in those games were West Coast and North Melbourne. Trying some new blood in those games would not have changed the result.

Ironically, in the final quarter of our last game Harry Petty shows up on the forward line to be the only tall in the team to score a goal in such a vital game. Hoping the coach had some “learnings” out of this.

The crux of it is refreshment for ongoing sustained success.  We had in effect zero renewal in 2022. Learnings for the coach.

On 9/9/2022 at 11:38 PM, Graeme Yeats' Mullet said:

Worth a try

Petty has been great when well supported down back. But has coughed up some crucial frees and lost crucial 1 on 1s in the last 5 or 6 weeks

If he can be the next Tmac, defender turned forward,  that'd be a great outcome

We have Smith, Tomlinson (if not traded) and Turner as 3rd defender options

Or even Coleman Medalist David Neitz.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
