Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Cal Twomey has reported on AFL.com that we're one of few clubs who have shown interest in Lloyd Meek.

This makes a whole lot more sense from a $$ point of view and potentially not giving up a first round pick like its been suggested for Grundy.

Irrespective of what needs to be given up the real question is whether he is an AFL footballer - from the little bit I've seen the answer is no

Having said that if our FD thinks he is up to it then I'm happy to defer to their judgement

Twomey also says:  "The Dockers do not want to trade Meek even if they land Jackson to partner ruck star Sean Darcy, but the Jackson situation has seen other clubs look at Meek as a potential pick-up".

It could be posturing but they don't want to trade anyone but have been trying to entice players from other clubs to join them when they have little trade currency.

Other teams mentioned with interest in Meek are GWS and Eagles.

That he is a Victorian puts us a bit ahead.

Even if Jackson stays I wouldn't mind getting Meek.  Most clubs have at least 3 ruckman on their lists.

Like many 3rd string ruckmen around the league, it's hard to set the world on fire. Meek is never going to get a gig ahead of a Darcy/Lobb combination. Still hasn't reached the prime age for a ruckman.

Agree with DD, he's a much better fit in all respects than Grundy. He can learn his craft from Max, while Max continues to be our no.1 ruckman. The notion of Max playing 2nd fiddle to Grundy is nonsensical.

Fremantle are a joke - don't want to trade a player that can't get a regular game in the 1's - don't have any decent picks to trade but still want to attract players from other clubs to join them

Dream on !

Pretty sure he debuted against us Round 1 last year and surprisingly gave Gawn a bit of trouble.

From that and the WAFL highlights (I know) someone posted on here a few months back I think he could be a bit of a diamond in the rough.  People seem to forget that you can only play max two ruckmen and so if there is more than that on a list then some won't get a chance to prove themselves.

There was a period there where we had Jamar and the backup was a topup between Spencer, Martin and Gawn.  Gawn was not really a standout until that game against Geelong.

With the success our ruckmen have had at other clubs, we should know this better than most.

Our game plan is built around 2 ruckman.  We can cover the odd short absence with pinch hitters like TMcD or Weidmena but if one of our two main ruckman have a lengthy injury where do we get the other ruckman from...

I would venture to say that if we still had Daw we may have given Max or Jackson a rest at some stage late in the season.

What about a separate Interchange or Sub bench for Rucks ?

That might be a bridge too far.

But I recall a discussion around adding a B rookie type category so clubs can carry an extra ruckman or two on their list.  It ididn't go anywhere.

Age 24, from out Ballarat way, 203cm and 109 kgs. Pick 69 in the 2017 draft.  Hasn't set the house on fire.

Had an excellent debut game against Gawn last year. That will stick in Goody's mind.

Playing consistently well at WAFL level this year. Hard for a young ruck to crack it onto a team on the up with Darcy and Lobb ahead of him

Contests well, takes a grab and has similar ability below the knees. Just doesn't have anywhere near the mobility of Jackson. Having said that we could do a lot worse, if the FD thinks there's something to work with there I'd consider it for sure.

If Jackson is leaving, I'd much rather take a punt on him and use the picks / cap space to attract the best key forward we can.  And if we can't get one, at least bring in some talented youngsters - ideally a young key forward and maybe some outside class for the midfield.

We found with Preuss it just isnt worth chasing a ruck that is not close to best 22 when all are available. If we are going to get a 24 year old ruck he must be a positive in conjunction with Max, not just as a stand by.

Interesting that GWS are interested when they have Preuss, Flynn and Briggs on their list.  Probably not looking good for at least one of the last two named.   Seems also to confirm perhaps that West Coast aren't interested in Jackson.

Meek’s big and combative in ruck contests, and has good athleticism for a big ruck. Obviously not Jacko level but he contribute on the deck. Marking/kicking not his strong suit so far at afl level. But without a long term starting chance it’s hard to know how that will develop.

If we’re convinced by Gawn forward then he’s a realistic opportunity as a cheap alternative to Grundy.

If we think Gawn will ruck at least 50% then I don’t know how Meek gets convinced to come to us, apart from the obvious that he’s better off here than Freo behind Darcy and Jacko. If I’m Meek I’m taking the Eagles offer and taking over from Nic Nat. But as long as the price isn’t over the top for a back up I’m definitely interested.

I'm keen to get Meek if Jackson goes (compared to the price tag, age and injury risk of Grundy who admittedly has a high ceiling).

But @Damo makes a good point re two big immobile ruckman.

I find it interesting that Mason Cox in recent weeks only plays as the second ruck and is not given time up forward.  Mason Cox is not a natural forward but has managed to take us apart a number of times and we all remember the richmond 2018 prelim.  Clearly McCrae see Cox as too much of a liability to their forwardline once the ball hits the ground.  I think we have noticed this with Gawn and Brown in the same forward line.

I guess that's the argument against getting someone like Meek in to play with Gawn.  If Tmac/JVR can force Brown out of the team next year maybe this is less of an issue.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
