Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If Jackson is leaving, I'd much rather take a punt on him and use the picks / cap space to attract the best key forward we can.  And if we can't get one, at least bring in some talented youngsters - ideally a young key forward and maybe some outside class for the midfield.

Yes that’s the strategy if LJ walks back west

We found with Preuss it just isnt worth chasing a ruck that is not close to best 22 when all are available. If we are going to get a 24 year old ruck he must be a positive in conjunction with Max, not just as a stand by.

True but they're hard to find

Get him as a break glass in case Max goes down but I'd prefer to see us push Weid into this position or just play one ruck with back up from JVR etc

Age 24, from out Ballarat way, 203cm and 109 kgs. Pick 69 in the 2017 draft.  Hasn't set the house on fire.

But has he had the chance to track his zenith yet?   Could Max mentor him and turn him into a star?

Any observations about his forward craft, if any?

IMVHO it would be far more value fir money (and draft) to go for Meek and a potential tall forward than Grundy.

Pretty sure he debuted against us Round 1 last year and surprisingly gave Gawn a bit of trouble.

From that and the WAFL highlights (I know) someone posted on here a few months back I think he could be a bit of a diamond in the rough.  People seem to forget that you can only play max two ruckmen and so if there is more than that on a list then some won't get a chance to prove themselves.

There was a period there where we had Jamar and the backup was a topup between Spencer, Martin and Gawn.  Gawn was not really a standout until that game against Geelong.

With the success our ruckmen have had at other clubs, we should know this better than most.

Max;  12 disposals   30 H/outs     92% TOG

Meek:  6 Disposlas,  6 H/outs   93% TOG

Darcy came in for Round 2 and by Round 4 had become no.1 ruck, then with Lobb pinch hitting,  and Meek hardly ever back in team. By Round 7 Darcy well and Truly owned the role.

C'mon mate - it was (I think) his first AFL game.  We wasn't coming in to dominate against the best ruck in the game, he was coming in to compete.  And by Gawn's own admission, Gawn didn't have the greatest of days.

C'mon mate too - I just laid out the stats for interest. And the trajectory of his last 2 years. I'm not commenting on his ability or potential.

personally I think he's worth getting coz we don't have a second ruck and he is at least built like one, he won't have jackson's potential, but he could lengthen Max's career without selling the farm for a banged up 29 year old Grundy which i fear we may do.

We've shown interest, so he could be steak knives in the Jackson trade. Would be a better option than Grundy IMO, as he's younger and would be much much cheaper. Provides backup ruck for Gawn and the big Grundy money could be spent more important list needs such as a key forward, classy forward flanker or small lockdown defender.

Has looked good in the ruck, haven't paid much attention to his work around the ground.  Better long term option if he fits the bill.

But we aren't looking for a long term option, whoever we get needs to be able to play round 1 to 22 injury aside and contribute ... our premiership window is now

I reckon we might take him and Grundy. Remember we’ll lose Jackson, Daw, and Mitch Brown. Not sure if Weed will look at options. We need someone to help at Casey, and a break in case of emergency option.

But if we take him I would strongly suspect we aren’t showing any interest just yet. I think the club has its site on quality picks from Freo, and doesn’t want this muddying the waters just yet.

How can he possibly be a better option than Grundy? Grundy is a multiple all Australian and best and fairest winner and Meek is a WAFL player.

There's a difference between being a better player and a better option. There are more reasons for Meek being the better option than there are for Grundy.

Perhaps a chance to acquire him and Grundy? We need more than two ruckman on the list and would be nice to have one that's developed and ready to go in case of an injury to either Gawn or Grundy. Better than an 18yr old draftee that needs 4-5 years and wouldn't be able to physically compete. However I can't see him going for it as I presume he wants more senior time. Perhaps we should be scouring lists for a ruck that's 21/22 that might want to serve as an understudy to Gawn and Grundy. TDK anyone?

Maybe. Doesn't sound like a good career move for Meek to come to a club behind Gawn and Grundy. May as well stay at Freo behind Darcy and Jackson.  Surely he could find something more fruitful.

I hear your concerns on Meek  but Grundy WAS a multiple AA and WAS a B and F.  His contract has too many years left on it.

Big risk I can't see Pert signing off on unless contarct terms are rock solid our way risk-wise.

Good rucks generally play into their mid 30's.   He has had a year to freshen up, it is not that huge a risk honestly.....particularly with Collingwood paying portion of his lofty contract.

It is more about how Goodwin decides to use these potential weapons.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
