Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Clarko's ego must be something pretty spectacular

He'll get a monster pay day regardless of what he does and I guess his reputation will always hinge on the flags, however I can't see how either team will see him covered him in glory

They overachieved last year, and he got them into finals with an average list. The expectations that they would improve this year were false.

If Clarkson wasn't available, Rutten would still be coaching next year.

I'm not sure if Rutten will ever be a good senior coach, but his record as an assistant is very good.

All this talk of Essendon being a huge club annoys me. Even bigger than the Hawks who have won 4 flags in the time Essendon have not won a single final.

things change (as MFC supports know well) you don’t have the right to be called a massive club when you have been rubbish for decades

Essendon = 78,579 members in 2022 which has them as having the 5th largest Membership and they have been failing for many, many years.  I would suspect that the signing of Clarko would immediately add many thousands to that number.

Believe me, they are a "sleeping giant" and I hope they don't get Clarko because I love them being exactly where they are.

It is incredible that they held any Membership numbers after the 2012 drug saga, and a total indictment on Essendrug Supporters who still bleat that

“They did nothing wrong”

for this reason alone, I hope Clarkson gives this toxic organization a wide berth.

Technically, you are correct (and we all know that's the best type of correct) as they haven't done anything for the past 20 years.

However, in the 20 years prior to that, they won four flags.  No club has won more premierships than they have.

I dislike Essendon immensely, but they are wealthy with widespread support and a huge membership base and have every right to be considered a massive club.

Collingwood, despite only winning two flags since 1958, is also a part of that elite group as is Carlton who haven't raised the cup since 1995.  Richmond have cemented their place in the upper echelon with its recent success.

Calm down, and they they played Finals last year, which in hindsight might be an amazing effort considering the list. He was instrumental in Richmond's flags as well. Some are just destined to be better assistant coaches than they are head coaches.

Fair points.
Will be interesting to hopefully see another 2 decades of failure and them fall from the position of massive club. It’s not an indefinite position, you should to continue to earn your place.

One of my best mates was a bombers member for years. The saga broke his trust with the club and he hasn’t even been to a game since. Lost all interest.

That is probably how i would have felt if the MFC had gone down that path.

Pretty disappointing from Clarko for mine. Chasing the 'big club' instead of the club that has put so much time and effort into getting him and would let him run the show.

I doubt very much he runs the show at Essendon. Too many egos.

I guess Clarko has to factor that into his thinking - “will they turn on me if they don’t make finals in, say, 3 years?”

7 hours ago, DubDee said:

Similar to how the Hawks treated Clarkson. Said he would coach out his contract into the next year and then thought they might lose Mitchell and virtually sacked a 4 time premiership coach. Staggering.

I certainly hope we never treat our own like this

Well, we haven’t since 1965 anyway. 🥺

A problem for Ess is that if Clarkson brings in own people Ess will have some hefty staff contracts to pay out straight out of the soft cap .  The AFL will probably bankroll some of the retrenchment costs were it to be North (like they did us) but all hell would break lose if the AFL were to help Ess,

Clarkson's ego may lead him to the big club but I hope his political skills are well and truly honed.  His bully-its-my-way style won't work at Ess.  Not all staff or board members want him.

Does anyone have any serious doubts that EssUndone’s coterie group won’t “sort that out”, and of course that the AFL “Integrity Commission 😂😂😂” won’t find that there is nothing out of hand?

Goody seems a big fan, as well as a friend.  Could he replace Yze as asst if Adem goes?  Would he be a good fit, or would being good mates be a negative?  Or a positive? Or null?

I had a friend who felt likewise.  Grew up with Hird stuff all over his room, thought the sun shone from where the nasty stuff eventually hit the fan - and has destroyed all the memorabilia and has not watched a Bombers game since.

Clarkson doesn’t want to walk into a hotbed of back slappers craving for success, and a two edged sword of why he didn't go to where he got his first chance  and where he's needed most.

I actually thought it was the wrong appointment at the time as there was a mega walkout looming at the same time. It appears as though the group never really had the respect and belief from day 1 given how fragile the whole club after making the top 8 last year.

I think the AFL should throw an extra -20% to ensure Clarkson ends up at Norf. Essendon need to suffer for much much longer.

He never stood a chance, they couldn't even get the succession plan right.

I like the way Goody is once again walking the talk in terms of MFC’s values and respect for the competition- this time expressing concern for the way Rutten is being treated.  Real leaders lead by their actions. Well done.

(Which takes nothing away from my pleasure of seeing Essendrug imploding)

It's sick the way Rutten is being treated. I can't for the life of me see why they have him coaching a training session when they could possibly have Clarko announced as coach today.

He’s a good egg Ben, a real honest man by the sounds of it. I really hope this whole things ends well for him, I don’t care how it ends for the club but I hope Ben’s conscience and reputation are left somewhat intact at the end of all this.

Ess have to let him go and pay him out.  They can't expect him to coach for them after this.

If they don't the AFLCA needs to get him out of there, pronto!!.  They should have made a public defence for him already and not left up to his colleagues.

That the AFLCA said nothing to support coaches who were very badly treated while in contract:  Shaw, Teague, Noble and now Rutten suggests there is something very wrong with that organisation.

Dare I say it, if Hird takes over  as head coach at Essendrug I will love to hate them even more than I have hated the ferals pretty much all my life!

I too have hated them long term. Started I think with John Burt staging for frees (in the Bartlett manner, bouncing it as he was tackled) and Geoff Leek infringing in the ruck against Terry Gleeson and Bob Johnson.
And now they have totally stuffed up their current coach and aren’t getting Clarkson: surely they will have to pay Rutten out AND find some mug who is prepared to trust these sociopaths to support him.

Why wouldn’t he just quit?
And before anyone says he won’t get paid out the last year of his contract, we’re not talking about your average person on an average wage / salary. He spent 12 years on an AFL list, he’d be doing alright, plus he’ll likely pick up an assistants role next year. Life’s too short, take the pressure / stress of your self and your family and walk away.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
