Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Only change - a forward option to help out. Apart from the one-arm efforts and concrete hands, BBB must have contested 30 aerial  contests, and was two-to-one or three-to-one every time. He needs a hand. Joel Smith is a point of difference option who I would consider heavily.

He contested THAT final ball into the forward line and forced it to ground to Melkshams feet. Kozzie did the rest.

Must stay in but gee there were times last night we wished Weid was playing. That's how bad the situation is up there.

I think he is a fair way off his 2021 fitness levels and form.

What we win when he's on the ball reading and intercepting we kind of give back on his inability to find a man under heat when needed in clutch momentns amd nullify him as neay as possble.  Great example was his decision to run past Silvagni and get to a contested ball drop to spoil/pressure as Silvagan stayed over the ball

we need to make this side better not just continue to play players who are not doing enough constantly, small forwards are there to put pressure on but also to kick or help in kicking goals. we are not seeing enough of that from our smalls. for the sheer number of forward entries that bounce back shows we have problems. we need to face that is a major issue that needs to be addressed, doing nothing about it will only result in in continuing to happen.

Brown was pretty good he constantly had 3 or more players on his back. and frankly should have bad a couple of frees for push in the back Max did an massive job last night. they kick it long to him all night and he kept grabbing them under enormous pressure.

i do wish we had another kick out plan rather than going down the left side all the time. The blues did a couple of nice moves with open players down the middle that moved the ball on quickly. or even have a fast player run out to the right side, lets try not to be so predictable. with the field so open on the right you would think that a fast player kicking out  could run a fair way down the right hand side before kicking the ball.

Lastly we have a few players who just hold the ball up and stop the flow, in fact their holding the ball up actually allows the opposition to reset. The need to get the message to move the ball on, doing so would both help the team and make their game play more effective.

Harmes for Sparrow

Yes probably the only change for mine.

Chandler for Spargo might be the other but can't see them bringing Chandler in at this late stage given he hasn't been looked at (seriously) so far.

Maybe Smith/JVR for Spargo or ANB ? 🤔  Any experimenting should have been done weeks ago though probably.  The Port game and just after (latest) so doubt we'll see these now barring injury.

If we decide to bring in Harmes to negate Neale, perhaps ANB or Spargo goes out. While I shouldn’t judge on one superb quarter - Hunt looked far more potent than ANB across half forward. Together with Harmes, they do offer run and unpredictability.

Joel Smith or Van Rooyen probably need to kick 10+ Goals to force any kind of rethink on the forward line.

IN: Hunt, Smith (contingent on snagging 10 goals for Casey today.

OUT: ANB, Spargo

Seriously? Spargo had 4 disposals. ANB a nothing game again.

JJ was fine.

I would bring in Harmes for ANB.

Somehow we need another tall forward but we are bereft.

Would also like to see Bowey back. Not sure how we do it.

Yep. I like JJ, but I don't like him on the wing. Too slow for the pressure and there and ends up with just no look kicks (when he manages to actually get it away). 4 tutnovers, 3 clangers and only 177 metres gained is poor from a winger when we're going down his side of the ground a lot of the game. Poor from a pressure point of view as well, not because he doesn't try but just purely because his lack of speed isn't made up for enough by his reading of the play.

I think we need to tip the balance of run and speed more and bring in Harmes for JJ. Personally I'd get Gus back on the wing, that's where he plays his best footy within the context of team performance (also he's averaging nearly 8 turnovers a game since going into the midfield).

Agree on a second tall forward and Bowey, I'm keen on both, but can't see Goody doing it at this stage.

ANB and Spargo both struggling for form, no argument there. But ANB is the best pressure player in a team struggling to get their pressure up this year, Spargo is (by a loooooong way) the best user going inside 50 in a team struggling with their inside 50s. Despite their dips in form I don't think either will even be considered for being dropped.

Did not have an inside 50 kick though. Had three the week before, No point being the best at it if you dont get the pill enough to do it.

Yeah, absolutely no argument he needs to lift. I just think when you're a team that's terrible going inside 50 you have to find a way to get it to him more to help that rather than drop him from the team.

I have always liked JJ and was one of the first to push him up. I laughed at those that wanted him delisted. The same with Hunt. Given that though maybe I see him differently and am not acknowledging his shortcomings, which of course every sportsman has. I will rewatch the game and concentrate on JJ and see if I pick up something  I have missed.

Assuming harmes will play for Casey today - if he has a great game would expect him to come in at spargos expense.

He’d be a good tag for Neale

If he’s going to tag Neale on Friday then he can only play a half at most today. Maybe even not at all

I really like him as a player. No nonsense, tackles well, and never seen a game where he hasn't given 100%. Just not loving him on the wing right now. Not sure what his best role is though tbh, he's great as a utility though so you'd find a role for him somewhere.

Will never happen but we’d be no worse with Harmes for Petracca. His defensive work is a joke and he’s not giving much offensively.

JJ and Sparrow just going about their roles. So they’re the most vulnerable. Gus more wing and Harmes to Neale makes sense.

Not really his fault but Spargo struggling. Bedford and Chandler managed this week from VFL

The problem with the side is mostly the best players underperforming and not the role players.

I see that JJ is really struggling, has to be carrying an injury, surely. A couple of times he had the opportunity to intercept but couldn't get off the ground, also has no drive out of the contest, appears to be lacking explosive power. As much as it pains me to say it, Harmes must come in for JJ and Brayshaw back to the wing.

JJ’s (nearly) fatal flaw is he can’t weight his kicks on the run. He has an elaborate kicking action with good penetration but it has a big wind up that struggles unless he’s balanced. He can kick a goal on the run because there’s no concern about depth. But when he gets the ball and has forwards streaming to different patches of space that require a 20-40m weighted pass he often won’t pull the trigger. He’ll just wait for the shot target to unlock and chip it.

Langdon can’t kick either but backs his legs and has developed a pop pass that works at times. Gus will sometimes hold play up, other times will go for it and either make it or send it 4 rows deep in the crowd.

In handball situations JJ is usually good. Draws tacklers, keeps the legs pumping, covers a heap of ground. But with teams so good at covering the corridor and our half backs so bad at providing genuine drive there’s a question of how much attack we are losing by having such a safe player on the wing.

Honestly I’d love to try Petracca on the wing in very short bursts when it’s clear the ball is getting stuck there. He’d get great one on one match ups and space to use his powerful risk/reward kicking.

...or alternatively we could have an alternative plan to use the corridor occasionally, which is effectively what is being done to us.

Agree with the sentiment of the OP (no change is likley) but i think Spargo and maybe Sparrow or Jordan needs a rest. Freshen up the forward line a little and add some dash - hoping it would provide a similar outcome to the recent re-addition of Hunt in the backline.

In. Chandler, Harmes

Out. Spargo, Sparrow

JJ gets the ball kicked to him alone in space and then stops and props. The oppo defence then sets up. He does it all the time. It is infuriating. Langdon in the same situation just runs hard, knowing that something will open up. With a dysfunctional forward line like ours, our best chances will always come when the ball moves in fast and open. JJ wrecks that every time.

Cripps played very well against us. It was an interesting strategy to not bring Harmes in to tag him.

Saints did relatively well this weekend tagging Neale. They still have very good depth with McCluggagge, but would like see Harmes in for a negating role.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
