Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Hey Guys,
Love the show. It got me through the hard times of 2019 and 2020. Then in 2021 I loved sharing the ride with you guys.
Tonight's episode cant come quick enough, I need the closure. I've avoided podcasts, live radio, apps, websites and socials since Friday. The only medicine for my MFCSS is the Demonland Podcast.
My thoughts on the game: Pies kicked 15 goals 6 behinds (2 rushed). Dees are missing 25 meters out directly in front.

A question on behalf of our coaching staff:  Could the panel please dissect our forward-half woes, and advise how to address them quickly and easily.  Time is running out!  Thanks.

I too have avoided all media since the game - the first time all season, such is my frustration.

But it's crazy - bb marks on the wing with about 2 mins to go, we control the ball and probably win.

And in that parallel universe, I lap up every second of media I can.

Ugh.

By the by, spoiler alert, the short version of why we lost is tbe same as yours. Bad kicking is bad football.

There was also that botched kick by Kozzy (the target was Fritta), right after one of our goals (ANB or BB). We had the chance to be 7 points up, instead turnover and goal against.

There were so many instances against the black and white team where we were forward facing about to enter 50 and we just blaze away to a 2 on 3 situation.

Numerous occasions we had open options for players to take an extra second observe either handball or kick to players that were wide open no one within 20 meters.

This happened at least a half a dozen times Friday night. Its a simple fix but we have been saying this for how  long?

Ugh. I had forgotten about that.

In fact thatt was the tale of the day.

We screwed up a all but certain goal in the second and ot went straight up the other end and tbey scored a goal.

Because of course they did.

We are dying a death of 1000 cuts this year.  The little things that went for us last year, are going against us this year.

- Covid

- Unstable side

- Steven May incident

- Loading Fatigue

Question for the chaps on the pod;

In our losses, the team has been good enough to lead for long periods of the game, but has lacked the killer instinct to put teams away and ultimately it's seen us loose some games that we've had control of.

Do you think this issue can be helped with changes to the line-up, or is this purely a fitness and complacency issue.

Do you expect any significant changes over the next 2 weeks or would you expect the FD to continue to back the same sort of personel and structures?

Last two questions really will tell us what's going wrong.

Mine is ....Can we expect any game plan change, and why are all other teams allowed to talk back/ abuse umpires unnoticed.

We seem to be getting hurt with quick transition.  Usually our players elect to stand on the mark rather than pushing back outside 5 metres. The latter allows the player on the mark to move sideways to counter opposition players being the handball receive to break the lines. Should we be considering getting outside 5 more often to negate this ?

I don't really rate the WB's but they tend to get outside 5 quickly so they don't get locked standing on the mark which pretty much renders that player useless because by the time the umpires call play on the ball has usually gone passed them

Binman talked about outside 5 earlier in the year. Might be time to revisit this discussion and see what he thinks.

Thanks lads for taking by question on the podcast last week. If I could ask another question this week.

What is it with our fade outs? Not only are we fading out at the end of matches we are fading out at the end of some quarters and allowing our opposition a few quick goals. We just can't seem to stem the flow.

What is the reason for this? Is it fatigue and lack of concentration? How can we fix this?

I was buoyed by this game. Frustration comes from us being the better team and kicking ourselves in the foot with poor execution and leaking easy goals.

I rewatched the Pies goals and I don't think us at 100% effort we allow many of them. Would be great if you could please go through three areas in particular:

  • our back half stoppages to get your feedback on why we were lacking pressure and allowing uncontested exits from Pies on several occasions.
  • There were several from our back 50, very unlike us, where we allowed a kick down the centre from kickout and
  • From back flank where there was a Pies set play kicking to the side of the square and they beat us to the fall of the ball

Also good to understand why you think the Pies were outnumbering us at the fall of the ball, particularly in the 2nd half. Other was why in the 2nd half (assuming Pies brought extra to the contest?) we over hand-balled and didn't make some obvious ball movement strategy tweaks to kick it out to either contest or set up players in space like we generally do when we are on. Are they practicing the handballing part of our game so it is switched on come finals when we are making strategic changes to beat opposition?

All in all, even despite the mishaps if we kick AFL average in front of goal and don't have a couple of turnovers where we out for easy goals...we should have still won by 3-5 goals despite the above breakdowns. Definitely not panic stations nor were Pies the better team, they won but played 100 times we probably win this game 95 times.

We have another questions from our Demonland Facebook Page Messenger this time from Tristan F:

Thanks for the podcast. I enjoy the analysis each week so keep it up as it keeps me sane. I want to ask what you think about having an ex-ruckman as our forward line coach. Clearly this is an area where we struggle in in terms of leading patterns and players all competing and flying for the same ball. Add to this we often don't have anyone staying down to mop up. Something isn't working when you lose despite have 20 plus more entries.

What are your thoughts on our forward line coach? Should we target an actual credentialled forward to come in and sort this mess out next season?

All the best for tonight boys. If I were in your shoes I don’t think I could show up for it, such is my disappointment from the game. A simple question…

If we played that same game 10 times, how many times do you think we win? I feel it’s 8 or even 9. I know they played very well in the second half, but it feels like at least 30-40 events throughout the game went their way. So fortunate we’re they that if only a few of those events go our way instead, that we win.

@binman still getting behind ANB?  i have been with you but his game on the weekend really annoyed me.  So many times when we were surging forward and he would receive a handball and take on the tackler, stopping our momentum,  he just needed to keep the ball going fwd.  he wasn't alone but was a repeat offender.

Which brings me to another point, our hand balling around our HF line!  This is where we need to be kicking it to Ben Browns advantage, even if its a 2v1.  which sounds silly but if we kick it to him in a manner that he can bring it to ground, if a player is sitting in front of brown put it high on his head so brown can run in and make a contest, don't try and spear it in. This will give us a chance to get a forward stoppage.  to often we turn it over at our half forward line and its only 1 maybe 2 kicks for the opposition to get inside 50.

This loss mirrors the dogs loss to me,  annoying loss and puts pressure on our position this year, but not a bad loss!  We played well, beat them in so many areas and just didn't handle the manic play in the last.

Is Jordon still a lock for that wing? While I'm unable to assess his running patterns, space holding and km's run from a watchafl subscription, I found his reaction time with the ball in hand lethargic and slow paced. He wasnt manic or 'surging' enough with his disposal, which in turn meant worse entries forward., It may have been to do with Collingwoods pressure though. But harking back to the question:  do we want to bring anyone else in or make positional changes again: like Harmes returning to the middle, Gus to the Wing, Hunt or Bowey in defence but also sharing some time on that wing with Gus drifting back or wherever needed ie a rotational wing etc

Where do you boys think Petty is at?

He's got a strong following on D'land, and any critique isn't popular, but I'm increasingly nervous watching him 1 on 1 and he was simply exposed when isolated from Lever's support on Friday...

He had his worst game for some time I thought.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
