Also the pies players just know what do do with the ball. Look how quickly they moved it and we didn't. When we missed they got it out on the wings quickly. May just stands there waiting for max and about 10 pies players to join him.

I mean go back a few weeks ago when they best Essendon with that final play. Pendles knew what to do. If we somehow got the ball in the dying moments we would have just bombed it.

Also I hope our backline have a harsh meeting this week because they weren't great

Still livid. 

I went into last night's game so confident thinking that we'd finally turned the corner against freo and that our game from 2021 was starting to take shape again.

How wrong was I..  We've learnt nothing from the initial Freo game when they gave us a touch up in the 2nd half.

Our delivery inside 50, especially the deep pockets is really perplexing imo. Not only have clubs picked up on in by sitting players back in the hole we have no plan B when opposition start to pick off our entries.

Kozzie, Spargo and ANB failed to single tackle inside forward 50... again! If you're not providing defensive pressure inside our forward half or getting to the drop of the ball, then honestly, they're next to useless because around ground they're not giving us much.

I could go on and on but I won't.

Hate it even more knowing it's a [censored] start to the weekend I'll be stewing on it for the next few days.

Very very disappointing and what I will say is that sometimes the better team doesn’t win the game and that’s what happened last night 

Credit to the filth as they played well but seriously the game should have been dusted by half time had we taken our chances 

Some of the umpiring calls were a bit perplexing to say the least and certainly didn’t help but they shouldn’t have been close enough to make a difference

I am going to be quite bullish about this. Collingwood played about as well as they possibly could have. Their ball movement and pressure were outstanding. We lost by 7 points and led for the vast majority of the game. Do you think Collingwood before the game would have said “ let’s give them 24 more forward 50 entries, 95 more possessions, 14 more centre clearances and 24 more contested possessions, she will be right mate!” As Goody said, we left the door open by not converting the dominance in the first half. Something that can be quite easily fixed as we saw just under a year ago. Do you think we would be all hand wringing this morning if in that first half our forwards had the same accuracy and luck that Collingwood did? 
 

The players will respond in the next two weeks. Play them again in September? Yes please.

I understand where there are no options we tend to go to the pocket to try and lock it in but players need to back their judgement and go with best option.

I was sitting on the city side wing, and in the amount of times we ignored free players inside 50 at tbe punt road end was crazy. 

They are going inside 50 as of we have our two tall set up. But is that set up possible?

It hard to see weed coming back in again this season.

But if they dont pick JVR next week, maybe they have no choice but to pick weed as Smith won't be ready you wouldn't have thought. 

They are playing maxy up forward to cover the missing tall a bit, but to my eye he looks as if he is still carrying an injury. He was amazing lsdt night but doesn't seem to be able to elevate.

Nope. I don’t buy what your having. 
It’s the business end, 70k plus - motivation and effort is unquestionable.

For those saying they just couldn’t miss look at where they got their chances and where they targeted the ball going forward.

For those that say they got gifted goals from holding the ball decisions. Maybe we would have if we actually laid a tackle inside 50.

We had a crack but could not handle their pressure when it went up in the second half. We were back to playing ring a rosey with handball rather than driving forward and swarming in behind it.

The thing that does annoy me is having the 5 time All Australian ruckman starting quarters in crucial games in the forward 50 and letting his temporary sidekick start at the centre bounce. 

They had an all 22 performance whereas some of our role players went missing and our stars had high possession games but dulled for their usual impact.

The pies pressure was incredible in the last quarter. Finals like pressure is a cliche, but that is what it was.

By far best pressure we have faced tgis season.

And we couldn't go with them, which is a shock.

They deserved to win. If they can sustain that level of pressure through a finals campaign they are a real show of winning a flag. 

But from our side it was such a perplexing game tactically.

It was so much like the dogs game in that we didnt control the tempo like we normally do. We allowed it to be a run and gun for the entire first half. Which was working, except we didn't capitalise.

There was only one period- in the first few minutes of the third, where we looked to lock it in, but that was more about stopping their tempo, not us going slow deliberately to take the heat out of the game

And there were other weird things. The crazy number of handballs. That wasn't a pressure thing, at least not in the first half. It was clearly a tactic. We almost doubled their handball count.

And we went next level with our new long clearing handballls forward  into space. So many of them

Then there are the other departures from our template - one tall, melk as a defensive forward (though he played that role in a few games late last year), Gus into the middle, harmes as a sub, Jackson and maxy almost 50 50 in the ruck, may only taking 70 odd percent of kick outs and kicking out less often to the one area (no doubt influenced by not having g a second tall forward).

It looks like they are trying implement some prety significant changes to the game plan, or at least adding some pretty major tweaks.

Lots of people have been calling for less predictability from goody. Well, goody had answered that call.

That unpredictability was a factor in tbe ladt I tgought. Yes their pressure was a huge factor, but we often looked unsure of what we were trying to implement.

My illusions were well and truly shattered last night. I was sure we were going to swarm and overrun the pies. The exact opposite happened

Coughed up another big lead. Is there a worse habit to get into?

Fittest levels are just not there. Not sure what’s happened but burgess has been a huge loss

Our defensive woes start in our forward 50. Where has the tackling pressure gone? Brown halved a number of contests but there was nobody at the base of the pack to crumb or within meters of the rebounding pies. If we don’t lock the ball in the pies rebound so quickly we can’t get set

And I can only describe our continual kicking of the ball into the pocket to the 3 on 1 Brown out number as braindead. If the idea is to prevent turnover it was pointless because our smalls were no where close enough to crumb the loose ball or tackle the pies defenders anyways. Rotten coaching as far as I’m concerned.

And I know people will scoff but I don’t think we are as mentally up for it and sharp as we were last year. There was one team showing maniacal intent last night and it wasn’t us

A lot not working this close to finals. The coaches and players need to lock themselves in a room and have a forthright conversation. We can turn this around but some home truths need to be delivered. Too many players not playing their role

Thoroughly disgusted with that loss. And those f**kin pies supporters. After the early Cox goal they started with the USA chant. Vomit inducing stuff. And had to suffer the Collinwood chant on the train home. I'll have to go for a long run today to work this rage out of my system.

Okay interesting. But why is it that we are implementing new tactics into our gameplay in a must win game to secure a top 4? Surely it's far too late in the season to make any significant changes.

Couldn't agree more.  Jackson is a poor ruckman - he barely wins a hitout and when he also doesn't provide a contest it is terribly costly.  Gawn was outstanding last night, goal kicking aside and as the best ruckman in the competition he should be playing there as often as possible.

Slept on it now to give a proper analysis of what I witnessed at the G last night. We should have put the game to bed by half way through the 3rd, however I will say apart from Max in the first quarter, Koz on the run dead in front from 40 and possibly Salem's 50 metre penalty miss, all of our shots were quite low percentage shots. Why? Because we don't have the forward line mix that lead to dangerous spots, nor a midfield that have the foot skills to pick out such leads. Not using the corridor to any effect is not helping. 

Composure. It was an insane asylum at times with the crowd noise and we either ran out of legs or panicked, the transferral of pressure by hand to someone in a worse position really needs to be looked at - its 2020 -type play that I thought we had moved past. Hibberd, Langdon, Jordon and Oliver were the biggest culprits of this. Credit to Collingwood their frontal pressure was immense and we really crumbled. 

Ground ball crumbs in the D50. Shame on our mids last night, to allow the likes of Mihocek and Johnson to waltz through and crumb their own marking contests was embarrassing. Our back 6 was all at sea in D50 for most of the night too and they looked vulnerable for the first time in a long time. They looked like a high chance of scoring every time they went in.
