Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Daisy's commentary

The problem is that 7’s marquee caller, Brian Taylor, is awful. He doesn’t know the rules or the players. And he ain’t half as smart or as funny as he thinks he is.

Must admit I'm a bit surprised to read that. I guess if I was to listen to the pitch alone I wouldn't think much of her commentary, but because I find her to be so good at her job, I simply don't notice it the way I do with Underwood etc.

I'm a big fan of Daisy and don't think she is at all out of place commentating on the Mens game. In fact I think she improves it.

Rex and Dermot could easily have made their case that, in their view, networks make gender based appointments.  And that they prefer male commentators eg Carey.

They did not need to drag Daisy or any other female commentator into it.

Very, very poor to expose her to pillorying on social media for something that was not of her doing.

They got their 'click bait' but a fine young woman is being disparaged.  They should be ashamed.

Daisy is OK.  Doesn't do a lot for me, but there are plenty worse.  She does have some good insight.  She wasn't selected on merit, more-so her sex, but it is what it is and she's shown enough in the role to suggest she's not misplaced.

That's just an uninformed opinion you've tried to pass off as a statement of fact.

Was she hired by the Cats coaching panel as a PR exercise as well?  The AFL Media Association 'best analyst' award just PC gone mad?

Garry Lyon annoys me the most, because he never shuts up.  He must be paid by the word.  He also repeats the same point so many times.  I have to mute it.

I'm also not mad on Nathan Jones.  But he'll get better.  It would be daunting in your first year.  With experience I'm sure he won't sound so subservient.

Kelli Underwood is easily the worst caller I've ever heard.  The voice and hackneyed cliches are the pits.  Thankfully, she gets the graveyard timeslot.  Once again, she's not calling based on merit.

Oh for meritocracy.  But it's not the world we live in.

Clearly ^^^ dubdee will have a conniption at my comments.  C'est la vie.

Dermie. Lol

I don’t think her voice is high-pitched at all. Not sure why people think it is

She’s the best female commentator/analyst by a country mile. Abbey Holmes and Bec Goddard not bad. The female talent falls away pretty sharply after that

I suspect both considered her the best talent available.

The AFL have introduced quotas with regards to female coaches and obviously management at 7 thought she'd broaden their audience.  She's articulate, personable and if you wanted a female in the commentary box I doubt you'd look further.

LOL. Didn't Carey say that Kozzy was badly out of form then back in form within the space of a couple of minutes during the Geelong broadcast. Rex Hunt paved the way for the muppets we now have to endure each weekend.

Basically Rex Hunt had a go saying Daisy only had a job due to a gender quota. Talked up Wayne Carey as a superior commentator and that Daisy stole his spot on Friday nights due to her gender. It’s lead to a swell of toxic support online from some seriously sexist and brain dead people, if you can even call them that.

Rex is obviously an out of touch old fool. Daisy is one of the most insightful commentators going around. She provides better insight into what’s happening in the matches than most other commentators, especially the blokes old boys club types. She understands the modern game better than players from 2-3 decades ago who spend the matches beating their chests and the best insight they can give is getting a players name correct.

You’re best off ignoring the rubbish online if you have any semblance of humanity left. Some of the stuff said about Daisy has been disgusting and shameful.

Spot on

Content wise her special comments are unsurpassed in my view. The number of things she picks up on in game at the drop of a hat like why a player decided to kick to a certain area, why momentum has shifted, team psychology. Guys like Wayne Carey and Matthew Richardson are decent special comments guys I'll give them that but they really aren't capable of coming up with the stuff that Daisy does in a micro second. Richo usually says something like "Gee Hawthorn really need a goal here to get it back on their terms" and that's 90% of his commentary.

Jones definitely has a future in the biz.

Exactly right, Luci. Totally unnecessary to use any one particular commentator’s name when making their (otherwise reasonably valid) point.

Agree wholeheartedly with most commenters that Daisy is insightful.

Additional contentious opinions:

- BT, while fairly ignorant, is hilarious - not always, maybe even only occasionally, but in my opinion, worth it just for the lulz. But then, I appreciate the absurd.

- (don’t hate me!) Leigh Matthews, despite being another former legend, like Carey, is a woeful commentator. Every time states the bleeding obvious. Seriously, I could do better.

Can't stand alot of Kelly Underwood's over the top carry on, but the  Bruce also use to annoy me and after the novelty of Rex Hunts slang enthusiasm wore off (realitively quickly) his calls and rants irritate the hell out of me these days.

Love Daisy's work as well as plenty of that of ex elite male footballers come comentators too.  I also thought that Christi Malthouse was really good value, did a very professional, no frills job at what she did and I find it a bit sad that she doesn't seem to have a prominent role covering that game any more, because I think she was a very good fit, probably having grown up around that elite AFL environment, similar to Daisy.

Garry Lyon, Buckley,  Healy, Parkin, Mathews, Carey, Jonathan Brown, Nick Reiwoldt are all pretty good in my view.  As much as they can be a bit marginal at times I actually don't mind Brereton and Dunstall and although they can be a bit full of themselves, I do respect their first hand knowledge of playing their positions at the elite level.  Ross Lyon doesn't have the greatest voice for commentary either, but I've found some of the stories shares regarding his coaching days and banter he has with Nick Riewoldt to be quite entertaining sometimes.

Guys like Rex Hunt and Sam Newman have lost my respect these days.  I know they would contest that the world has gone all PC and that at their age, they think they've earnt the right to speak their mind and/or don't care what other people think, but there's a huge difference between giving simply an honest frank, straight down the line oppinion and ranting on like a total [censored] and not caring about walking all over other people's reputations and feelings.  It's about being frank in a respectful way and/or apologising if you overstep the mark, which I think either of the aforementioned would rarely do.

Andy Maher has gone up in my eyes after he wrote on Twitter: “Daisy Pearce is a brilliant footballer, the possessor of a great footy brain, a gifted broadcaster, an insightful commentator and a high-quality and principled human being.”

T - Rex is a dinosaur who played back in the the Jurassic period. Yibbida Yibbida - that's all folks.

Der mut has recovered some of his small amount of credibility by saying he was misreported but imo still fails in the areas in bold above.

Daisy is an intelligent, thoughtful and insightful football student and is excellent at communicating that insight. She is the best special comments person in the game and one of the few reasons to listen to the commentary at all.

But Daisy won’t appeal to everyone because a lot of people are not interested in being taught about the complexities of the game. In fact some people actively dislike being taught about the game. Maybe they feel like they know enough already, or the complexity is beyond their grasp, or maybe they just want to switch their brains off and watch two team smash the suitcases out of each other. Each to their own but Daisy is clearly the best at communicating the complexities of the game, which is exactly what a special comments person is theoretically supposed to do.

I think this is true...Unfortunately I also think a lot of people don't like the thought of being taught about the game by a woman.

If you suspect that she was considered the best talent available, why state that she "wasn't selected on merit, more so her sex"? You're looking for a culture fight where there isn't one.

Also, the AFL haven't mandated gender quotas AFAIK - I assume you're referring to the women's coach accelerated program?  The point of the program is so that current AFL coaches can mentor top AFLW players and provide a pathway for female players to develop skills to coach in the AFLW. That's very different from forcing AFLW clubs to hire a mandated quota of women at the expense of male coaches.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
