Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The best contested mark in the league as well.

Not this year he wasn’t. Poor Max was so banged up from constantly getting hit (how many frees did he get again?), he could barely raise his arms above his shoulders without being in pain

Agreed. Hence the Grundy acquisition.

And therein of course lies the bonus value of Grundy.

Gawn will be in contests, both marking and ruck, with fresher legs than he has had since he was delivering pizzas.

He might even play 100% game time while still being fresher, thanks to not having to run the extra fifty 50m surges every game with  Grundy able to cover a different portion of the ground.

Gawn's contested marks this year were at a higher average per game than any other year in his career (2.5 - compared to next best 2.3 - which was last year).

I'd say he was about on par with 2021.

He was the second best contested mark in 2022 behind Tom Lynch, who was easily the best.

That's interesting. Thanks. To my eye he was nowhere near as dominant t this year in the air than previous years.

My feeling is we actually manufactured far more opportunities for him to blow his 2021 averages out of the water in 2022, and due to the opposition scragging him and his own soreness, he seemed to drop a hell of a lot of marks he should have taken and was in a position to take this year.

I think it's likely with Grundy's inclusion, Max takes more like 5 a game. Be intriguing to see.

Quick query.  Bowes is a salary dump and cats get pick 7. So it’ll mean they get a player and a much lower draft pick. So why do the Pies think they hold the bargaining chips.

I would say the difference though is he had more opportunity for contested marks this year given he spent far more time forward. Especially in the second half of the year, Jackson was often the primary ruck.

We currently have 2 KPFs in BBB and T Mac, who are banged up, and would have us questioning their output going forward. Both are younger than Max. So why do people think that acquiring Grundy and giving Max more time up forward will extend his career?

You sure do love cancel culture for someone who bangs on about free speech and being open to different opinions.

Anyways, on the actual point - Gawn attended 258 less ruck contests this year than he did in 2021. His hitout stat was the lowest it's been since 2014 and his shots at goal was slightly up as was his marks inside 50.

Luke Jackson's ruck contest average went up by 6.4 per game. His shots at goal average came down slightly also as did his marks inside 50.

I would say that paints a pretty clear picture that Gawn played more forward this year than last which obviously gives him more opportunity for contested marks.

Lovely stuff once more in this thread. Good to see Lord got his OneNote out again to ‘copy/paste’…

What wonders must be in that One Note?

WYL’s would run the gamet - it would be quite the manifesto.

Gawn is no where near as dominant contested marking as he was because players kick to him far too often especially in predictable set play scenarios. Opposition are aware and make sure there are at least two players around to make the spoil,  make him pay for it, create a stoppage or ready to pinch the crumbs  His numbers and averages are inflated because whilst still clunking them to keep up his average he drops a hell of a lot more or is effectively spoiled.  His percentage is very low. What was once his major weapon has been more or less neutralised.

Nah, he was still predictably behind the ball last year and yet our pressure was up, so they'd kick it to him anyway.

One of my good mates' cousin is a Hawthorn backman. He said to his team mates, "at least I didn't kick it to Gawn like the rest of you!"

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
