Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

We did it literally a year ago. Why not next year?

I didn't say it would be easy, I said if we fix some simple things we'll be up for it big time.

I'd love to have a draw like Geelong's 2022. What a dream draw for a 2021 preliminary finalist.

Fixture and list health had a lot to do with their build up. If the powers that be were to acknowledge this then, you can at least do something to make the draw fairer.

Our game plan is somewhat outdated. You may find it laughable but we cannot go into 2023 and expect a different result. It may not be A major overhaul but we definitely need to work on more direct method. I can’t work out the f50 lack of pressure though. Some say effort but I think it’s the way we deliver i50 and how the opposition rebound in numbers and get through our zone.

He stealing goals off Kozzie and Fritsch. He is a role player and would have suffered the same fate knowing how we delivered the ball into the pocket. To think that our fortunes would have been changed by a couple of forward pockets is folly.

Well a forward pocket kicking 14 points against the Lions, puts us into the PF for starters.

Stengle  - 53 (25)
Pickett - 41 (23)

Close - 26 (25)
Spargo - 10 (24)

Miers - 13 (22)
ANB - 9 (23)

Rohan - 14 (12)
Fritsch - 55 (24)

ANB and Spargo both have work to do, that's for sure, but they are also pretty pure half forwards given how often we use Fritsch as both a marking target but also the out the back player and a crumber.

If ANB kicked 17 goals 9 rather than 9 goals 17 then his goal total would actually be fine.

Very convenient for you to match Fritsch against Rohan instead of CAMERON.

Last year we looked really fit and were playing out games full of running.  The phrase often used - 'Running on top of the ground'

Eapecially in the last 2 games of our year (PF & GF)

That was Geelong this year.  Today (collectively) they were a metre in front of the Swans all day.  And then they outran them constantly

Us this year?  We looked tired and listless before and after the North game.  Full of running we could have beaten North by 20+ goals in that game.  We had 74 inside 50 entries that day but couldn't finish.  We had the skill & ability but not the legs

No legs means 2nd & 3rd efforts dissipate, running hard to position disappears, all over the ground pressure is at a minimum, tackling intent and sticking tackles subsides etc etc

So against the best teams, the game plan gets broken down

The reasoning (why's & wherefore's) for that has been much debated here however, what our eyes told us is that we often looked and played as if tired (especially in the last quarters of many of the games) Even in the 10 game winning streak in the first half of the season

So get the freshness back in the legs and we'll challenge again.  We've got loads of talent (which we'll add to) but talent alone isn't enough (as we found out)

You've got to have the legs

It's 3rd tall v 3rd tall, we did (at least in 2021) have 2 key forwards to match against Hawkins and Cameron. A reason for a drop off from our smalls in the drop off from the talls.

But I'm happy to exclude Frtisch from the conversation, either way, it's not like the Cats have 3 elite goal kicking smalls.

Much fairer to match ANB up against guys like Close and Miers who do a heap of up the ground running than it is for Stengle who spends a lot of the game camping at the forwards feet.

Careful!! No one can replicate what ANB brings I've heard! His transcendent running patterns and grass minding is too big an asset

Could we also match BBB with either Hawkins or Cameron. How does that compare?

Agree Fritsch and Kozzzy were excellent

Agree ANB and Spargo simply underperformed

but also our key forward deficiency means in 2023 we need TMCD/JVR/BBB to also produce

Hawkins 67 v  …

Cameron 65  v …

Fair enough,  it’s just I can’t cop ANB.

Nice spot, well done, not many would know of Harry these days.
Are you a connoisseur of said movie ?

Oh yeah, great film.  Top 10 all time

For some add-ons ... google 'Harry Lime audio plays'

Orson Welles starred in about 70 half hour audio plays based on his Harry Lime character ... available at archive.org

They're all very good

Anyway, back to Grundy ...

Could it be that the end of Max (as Max the main man) is not that far off?  And we need a ready made replacement sooner rather than later?

He's taken a lot of punishment in the last 5 years and is a bit banged up right now.  So no time for another understudy

The time is now

We're more direct when we're turning the ball over closer to goal, which is directly related to pressure from half forwards and mids. This is what so many don't seem to understand.

Route 1 is not long and slow to the pockets. Route 1 is turn the ball over close enough to goal that we get an easy shot on goal.

And I haven't said we don't need to tweak the system. I'm saying its outdatedness is overstated and pretty much just wrong, unless you failed to comprehend what Geelong did today.

Thanks for the info, I’ll check it out. I’ve been watching Orson interviews on YT in the last few days.

TTM, my No.1, IMO it has 3 of the All time best scenes in film history, Harry coming out if the shadows is One of them, the final scene and the ferris wheel  the others.

re. Grundy, at first I was horrified but have come around to now think it’s the right move. Agree that we may have seen the best of Max and perhaps even the end may be sooner than anybody thinks, lets hope not.

The concept of (a fit) Gawn/Grundy may even prove to be a master stroke particularly if used in tandem with Max rucking in the defensive half ( kick behind the ball ) where he has played some of his best footy (imo) and Grundy taking the centre square and a more traditional ruckman role. At the very least, it’s a major point of difference to all of our opposition.

You know it doesn’t work like that. But if people want to waste their summers thinking we were ‘only a forward pocket away’ go for it.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
