Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty handy year to hold 4 picks in the top 36 and a father son that we mostly likely fall after that.  From memory Yze and White sons will be 2024 eligible.

Gives us real opportunity at trade time and drafting to create a real long period of success.

Harley Reid
GC academy tall forward

—————————————

- Tassie mid who looks 25
- WA ruck with a BMI of near death
- WA key defender (there’s 6 of these each year)
- tiny small forward
- 3 precocious medium forwards who’ll need to grow or show midfield ability to be elite prospects
- 1 skinny balanced vic metro mid

To quote JT ‘next year is next year’.

Unless I had pick 1 or were the GC suns I wouldn’t be all that excited by this crop

A bit of a look at next year's crop. Plenty of names to keep an eye on:

23 in 2023: A look ahead to next year’s top prospects

Daniel Curtin the best of the WA group, got size, good skills and can play either end.

Some boys not on the list from WA will start attracting attention, 18 months ago nobody knew who Rueben Ginbey was and he climbed above all of the others and some highly touted for the last 2 years didn’t get taken. Jed Hagan didn’t grow and his elite fitness wasn’t enough, which didn’t really surprise m.  Gilbey had an injury interrupted year .

Koen Sanchez who is on that list I think may slide, had a good underage year but I’m not sold on him long term. Coen Livingston has finished school so will get a full year of Colts in and climb the boards  forward ruck who impacts the scoreboard. Aiden O’Driscoll is all class playing off a wing or half back, great speed, clean at ground level, elite foot skills and impacts the scoreboard from the wing. Won the B&F at Wesley College this season finished in front of Ginbey and one I think will go the first 2 rounds next year. Tholstrup and Kentfield two big forwards at Subiaco who will be worth keeping an eye on especially Kentfield who has size, aggression and good below his knees for a tall. Hardeman from Swans will go first or early second round really good penetrating left foot and elite runner

Like Petracca, Oliver, Cadman, Ginbey, Holmes and others they come from nowhere. I see so many highly touted 15 and 16 year olds stagnate as others grow physically and get serious about their fitness catching up and/or passing many who stood out as juniors.  Trac was always expected to go, but he wasn’t first round tip a year out. He got fit and probably should have went #1. There will be plenty of bolters between now and next November

This is a strange response for mine. These kids have put their name on the radar as 17yr olds and still have a full year of growth and development from a physical and football perspective.

Of course the list of "top 10" will chop and change over the course of next year. Cadman, Ginbey and Humphrey weren't on this list last year while Hayes and Lemmey were taken much later on draft night and Teal not taken at all. Still, 7 out of 10 of these listed players last year were taken in the first round and 5 in the top 10 itself.

We have 3 x first rounders (1 future) and 2 x second round picks to play with which gives us the strongest draft hand we've had in years. Worth keeping track of the talent on offer in my view.

Also the phrase "next year is next year" will be equally applied to the end of the 2023 season and I would put money on us attempting to trade up as high as we can with the draft capital we have.

I’m not saying it’s not a talented crop but it looks more on par with a regular group at the very top (if Cal’s rankings are solid) than a special crop.

Compared to the super draft with the King twins, gun bigger mids in Walsh, Smith and Rozee, and some rare talent in guys like Rankine, Luko, Blakey and Thomas I don’t think it stacks up at all.

We’ll have a really good hand and most likely be willing to try to get up the order. And of course more names will announce themselves as the year goes on. But this list of names looks to me like good reason that JT and co were willing to have a very strong go at getting Essendon’s pick this year.

Not a midfielder in sight.  That's most unusual.

Harley Reid can just about play anywhere but if anyone wants a midfielder and they can get hold of the #1 pick, he'd be the one.

I reckon a few mids will emerge over the season and some of the players mentioned might go into the midfield.

Chaser J posted a 23 in 2023 above and there's not to many mids in that lot either. Looks like 2022 absorbed some of the good ones going around.

With dual position threats very much in vogue, I suspect we’ll see fewer pure mids coming through. Of that 10, I’d expect at least 6, probably 7, to spend significant time in the midfield next year. McKercher & Lorenz will be predominantly midfielders. Darcy Wilson’s missed Cal’s 10, but I’d keep a close eye on his development at Murray next year. He’s an exciting fwd/mid who could push into that mix.

Reid’s as bulletproof as they come at the top of the order and highly unlikely to be available for us. I really like Duursma and Moir, they are clean in the air and on the ground and just very classy players. Philactides would be a superb fit for our backline with his pace and bounce out of the backline.

I think it’ll be a good draft to go into without specific needs to fill, which is why we’re in a great position one year out (and nabbing Jefferson & Verrall this year were sound choices). We can just go shopping for the best players without over drafting a player based on what position they play.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
