Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Petty up forward?

Goody spoke in a recent presser how great it is to finally have continuity in the back line specifically regarding May, Lever and Petty.

I'd say there is very little chance this happens.

I've always been in the camp that we leave Petty down back because how valuable he is.

Right now though, our forward structure is not working. Don't think shifting Petty up forward against Geelong is a good move considering he'll most likely take Cameron.

I'd probably look at the move once Turner is available to play. I've lost confidence in Tomlinson after he got smashed by Sam Reid.

Can only give it a go right?

I love our defence and I love Petty in defence. So I wouldn't move him.

We just have to hope that our outstanding defence and outstanding midfield is enough (to win a flag) to offset our average forward line.

We've averaged 106 points in the last fortnight so things aren't that dire up forward.

Tomlinson really blotted his copy book on Reid vs Sydney.  Was all at sea.  Sulked each time Reid beat him.  Hasn't stood out at Casey since.  He will only be depth.

I wouldn't be surprised if he (OOC 2023) gets a chat along the lines of:  'we are not sure what the future holds re senior games so you might like to look for new opportunities this year'.

iirc he came on a very good $ package so it would free up cap space for next year's contract renewals.

On Petty:  He is a defender.  He is May's understudy.  Leave him there.

Which we certainly can.

Doggies won a flag with no genuine top line key forward in 2016.

Richmond won a flag in 2017 with Jack Riewoldt and Josh Caddy as their two key forwards believe it or not.

If Ben Brown can at least get back into some form then I think we'll be okay. Just need a chop put from Gawn/Jackson and even Weideman to step up as well.

The idea in isolation has merit. However, if you take Petty out of defence and then you need a tall, aerially strong replacement. Do we have that? No. Tomlinson is very poor overhead. Disco Turner is a possibility but has only played half a game.

It would be nice if someone up forward could clunk a few...

That game really dropped his stock price in the side, coaches don't forget those ones..

  1. Petty is an integral part of our defence.

Would, just maybe, give Tomlinson a run as a forward IF we are going to experiment with someone else there

Ess or Saints perhaps.  Neither well stocked for defenders.

Could Carlton find a use for him?

On the other hand maybe one cast-off Dees defender is enough :p

If we had a good quality stopper to take Petty’s place you might consider it as our fwd line us so poor

but we don’t, so we need the big 3 guns at the back especially against the Cats

Whilst it is very tempting to push Petty forward I think they will resist purely because our biggest strength is defence and he is a critical part of that structure

If we had the luxury of Disco Turner with 25 games more and was performing well at senior level or say Joel Smith to take Petty's back six role then it would be more tempting - however we are not in that position

I really hope that when Joel Smith is fit again (fingers crossed) he gets a run in the forward half - there are few options down back without more injuries and I think he is too good to be languishing at Casey. He would imo offer a more competitive aerial option than BB with greater mobilty and capacity to apply F50 pressure. This is obviously dependent on TMac's availability

Tomlinson is not the answer in the F50 imo he is not strong overhead and not quick enough to be effective on the lead

After seeing Goody's comments, can't see this happening.  Having said that, I would like to see it (even if its a bit of experimenting pre-season next year).  Having the ability to throw Petty forward in game if things aren't working would add a string to our bow.

Given our tough run home, I don't think they will tweak with the back three unless forced to due to injuries (eg multiples of Max, Jackson, Weid, Brown).

Let’s game this out; Petty moves forward for Brown. Tomlinson comes into backline.
The midfield and half forwards continue to dump kicks in as the retooled forward line attempts to gel enough to lead into space and not each other. Meanwhile the backline is weakened somewhat without Petty.

I am fine if we want to turn Perty into a TMac like swing man but he will need a preseason to give him a chance to succeed.

I think the better option is to put it on the forward line to find form. Brown and Fritsch can do it in big games - I have literally seen it. Gawn is getting better as a forward and will create space for others but all this relies on two things;

1. Front half turnovers - give our forwards what they had last year.

2. Better decisions with ball into forward line.

But defense wins flags. We won a flag with a similar forwardline last year and we scored heavily in finals.

Forwardlines are overrated. Haven't helped Brisbane or Geelong win flags recently.

Yeah I know. I genuinely do love Petty down back.

I've learnt this year that he's becoming hard to replace the better he gets.

Agree and at 197cm he is also our tallest defender, has good hands and quite a good engine for a big man, covers a lot of territory. We need his skill-set down back to support May & Lever.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
