Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

For me, this is sort of like the Cam Pedersen debate revisited. Who could ever forget Stuie’s hashtag?

5 or so years ago, there was a school of thought that stated that the Bear was no good because of his returns in terms of goals per game.

In the end, people didn’t see the role Pedders played in sticking his fat arze in the way and bodying out defenders. That gave Jesse heaps of space to lead into and helped him get those 40 plus goal seasons. Plus, he was handy at playing second ruck in the forward fifty where his bulk was used to great effect in being thrown against his opponent at stoppages (he likened himself to a shorter Shane Mumford).

The issue with BBB is similar: people are judging him by the wrong metrics.

BBB is being under-appreciated in a different way. If you think he is the 60 goal plus FF from North days, you are kidding yourself. His purpose these days is to 1) halve contests and create spillage in the forward fifty and 2) push up the wings and clunk marks one on one to link up chains of play down the field. If he can kick 2 to 3 in a game, then he’s done his job.

I’d say he just needs a bit more confidence and Tomald back in the team and he’ll be cherry ripe come September.

What about our indigenous players? Culture matters until it doesn’t suit my views?

The matter has been dealt with and he is playing again.

If the Adelaide indigenous players are ok with it, i'd back ours to be ok with it. It's not like the bloke is De Goey or something.

Loved Pedo.

I reckon his career best form was when he became our makeshift ruckman when Gawn went down in 2017.

I remember clearly a game against Essendon where he gave Tom Bellchambers an absolute bath.

He was also so reliable around the ground that some of his contested marking around the ground was elite.

He gave lion hearted efforts in the ruck and I think that year alone he won many respect of supporters.

I was waiting for that kind of performance from Weideman and M Brown on the weekend but just wasn't quiet there. Both did well to compete but.

One thing you certainly had to give to Pedo was his (sometimes wild) attack on the ball in pack situations.

I also liked his time with us and think he would be very very handy as backup for todays team.

Are you for real ? Today a back up ? Get Jamar White and Spencer in training for a real retro look!!

Pedo was a great team player and trier but not a first ruck replacement in a premiership team!!

If BB had the service from the umpires similar to Aaron Naughton he’d have another 10 goals for the season and we’d be saying he’s played his role. As it is Aaron is miles better at playing for frees that Ben, as are most of Bevos Logie Winning Brigade, perhaps we need to spend a little time on our acting skills leading up to finals?

Honestly I feel like some demonlanders are watching a different team to the one I’m watching. Our forward line instructions are clearly to prioritise bringing the ball to ground. You will see BB competing with 2,3 or 4 defenders regularly and halving the contest. If he goes up in a pack mark situation with soft hands he will only ever mark or be out marked, that is not our strategy. We play percentages and the number of individual goal kickers over the past couple of weeks tells me that our strategy works.

He virtually never gets a block and without another genuine tall target he will rarely get space to run and jump. I’m not sure what key metric is telling people he is not doing his job, all I can think of is that his conversation on set shot, which is usually elite, is a little bit off lately. He does a power of work to get up the ground and provide an outlet.

I’m honestly unsure what people are seeing that they could attribute to BB not playing his role.

The truth lies somewhere in between, doesn't it?

Yes, he's got a role to play that isn't just him kicking bags, yes, as part of our gameplan we need him bringing the ball to ground and he's doing that and yes, he is regularly competing with multiple defenders hanging off him. Agree with all that. Also agree with his work-rate. At the gorund you can see how

But also, he is dropping non-pack marks under less pressure, and he's being outworked in one-on-one contests too often. And he's missing set shots that he used to never miss. And he's burning team-mates by snapping shots when he could be passing.

He's not "cooked" as some have suggested, but he's also not going as well as your post suggests IMO.

From memory, he probably kept our season going for one week longer against an early rebuild Brisbane team before the Collingwood debacle hit (the signs of what we’re to come in the latter match were on display here).

I remember him keeping his feet and running onto a loose ball out the bank on the MCC members wing that led to a 30-40 meter run into open space, and a goal from forty out.

The Lions had been pushing hard up until that point and had come back from 32 points down to cut the margin to one point. He’d had a great game until that point, but that was bloody brilliant stuff.

In an ideal world, we would have a specialist backup, but Pedders was as good as you could get with what we had available.

That’s precisely my view as well. The role he’s playing is valuable and important, and there’s no better option. But the dropped marks and missed goals make me feel sad.

He’s not that far off. It’s the type of form that we often see turn around in an instant.

A couple of things.
Brown is too nice. He gets man handled in contests and he doesn’t protest. He needs to start playing for frees a little and exaggerate contact like basically every other key forward does and get some frees his way early in games.
No way Naughton or Hawkins get defended the way he does without multiple frees.

The second major issue for me is his goal kicking. He’s been way off and if he nailed his shots the last month nobody would question his form as he would have multiple goals per game.

Two obvious reasons we arent seeing BB in tip top form....

1. The 100 meter run up means he is in recovery mode for at least 5 minutes after every shot at goal

2.  He isn't eating meat like Macca.  Gotta eat your meat!  Because we all know that Animal protein = goal accuracy.  Plant Protein = inaccuracy

I think a lot of that comes down to his role and how we play (constant pressure all the time when the ball is in contest and when we are defending).

At North, BBB was one of my most disliked players because of the amount of frees he used to draw. He’d get one out on a lead, get a degree of body contact, and fall over like he’d been hit by a cannonball. He’d get a good 3 goals against us doing that (plus others from leads and in the general play).

He’s gotten results by playing in this manner with us maybe twice from memory (against the Hawks this year and against the Dogs in round 19). But realistically, to be that spillage/contest player mentioned earlier, he needs to remain in the play as soon as the ball hits the deck to make up numbers. If he’s not getting an arm or leg in there to keep that ball trapped in our forward fifty, he’s not doing his job. Acting for frees and appealing to umpires will preclude him from doing it.

I look forward to the day Tomald ‘converts’ BBB to the all meat Jordan Peterson diet and we are blessed to read the following outs:

OUT: B. Brown, McDonald (constipation)

If there was a midseason trade period, I'd get Tex in a heartbeat. But looking forward, I really want to see JVR in that role asap.

As for the  supposed no [censored] policy, we currently have a player who's twice been clocked by a teammate. TeX has served his punishment, and I'm sure the Dees players would be accepting, unless they are all Cancel Culturists.

He also gave a cheap coat hanger on the weekend that led to a free kick, similar to his VFL suspension. Very important for our structure, but definitely needs to work on some things.

Have to honest, I've never seen the so called "tunnel ball" incident either.

I thought Pedo did some ok things for us.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
