FWIW, one of the very (very) few discussions of this in the media was between Lyon and Buckley (on SEN?) where Buckley (who would know a thing or two) elaborated on doing extra running/training load in the lead up to the bye, as it's almost the only time in the year when it's possible. Chris Scott (AFL 360?) clarified that what Geelong were doing was for a 14 day period.

Neither of which are loading or have long-term adaptive benefits, but may be useful as maintenance without too much cost.

I was at the game ... WOW !!!

I think there should have been more mention of Harmes' game. He was (like the usual suspects) fantastic. Also, Hibbo did a great job on Cameron.

Hopefully we back up against the Crows.

The Lions are woefully out of form. Their midfield (sans Bailey/Zorko, and perhaps even if they played) is not in the same league as our boys. And their tall forwards are very flakey. We match up very well against this side; hopefully we play them in the finals.

Freo (obviously), Jee-long and Richmond pose more of a threat. I think we've got the Swans, Carlton and Bulldogs covered.

It was great that we changed our forward set up to go smaller - and it worked a treat. I have always felt the lack of pace of the lions defence, and Daniel Rich in particular is exploitable 

kudos to Bailey Fritsch. We played through him a lot in more of a tall forward role than usual, and as a result he had to fly for a lot of marks against multiple opponents at times. It’s a strength of his that he competes so well in the air and is rarely out marked in either a one on one or in a pack.

also very noticeable that our inside 50’s mostly avoided high balls to stationary tall forwards that are ripe for intercept marks. Unlike the 3rd quarter v Pies that nearly cost me a flatscreen!

On his performance last night I was so disappointed in what I saw. In fact he looked like a genuine plodder and only had the 8 disposal as an on baller. In fact, looking at his overall career stats it seems like he hasn't really cemented a spot in the senior side and has had some underwhelming numbers.

 

I saw two games of his last year and thought he was a absolute gun in the making. I still think that but agree, he hasn't showed much this year. Hard to break into that midfield though and I'm not sure he can play anywhere else.

Rewatched the game today, while packing house up for a move to the Ivory Coast. Sparrow stood out on 2nd viewing, would say he has reversed some recent poor form and had perhaps his best game to date. Closely watched Bowey again, did some good things and not desperate to drop him, but he doesn’t seem to be making the same space and time for himself that he was doing so well.

The only good thing to come out of Covid (at least in a football sense) was watching matches and being able to hear the players call out instructions etc... I'd love the simplicity of that when watching live tv, or on replay...

I felt the half time lead this week was far more “convincing” than the prior three weeks.

Anyone at the game see kossie hit on rayner i think in the second.  On the telly you can hear the umps telling him to let go after.    It looked like a decent hit but overseas viewers didn't see the carry on  after.

I wasn't at the game but saw the bump and heard the umpire telling both Rayner and Pickett off in the background while play was continuing on lol.

It seems you have convinced yourself, literraly in spite of the mountain of evidence to tbe contrary, that loading is a myth.

That what these elite, professional sporting organisations are doing is a couple of weeks of harder training and some maintenance.

That when the coach of one of the teams says we have always done it, but not 'well enough' and that they have to go harder to have any chance of winning, he is talking about going harder for a two week block.

From where I sit that is completely illogical. 

But it is logical for you, so I guess your mind is made up (unless of course  a trusted expert like a current or retired footballer, comes out and categorically says it happens and goes into specific detail about the length  intensity etc. Coz you know, why would they not)

Until the end of 2019 I did not like watching a game on TV versus going to the ground. Then 2 years of enforced tv watching and a constant stream of night games has resulted in me enjoying the tv game a lot more. Now at the end of June I am satisfied with watching the game on TV. I may not go to another game until the the finals arrive as the last 2 home games are night matches. I never thought this would happen to me but there you are.

It was umpired like a final. Less than 30 frees paid - nothing soft, no afters were paid, aggressive 50/50s were let go.

So glad I spent the money to come down to see that game.

I’ve not seen this banner but it’s unlikely it’s being used currently. Unless there’s a different name on the reverse side and some one was inadvertently holding it aloft with that showing.

You can lead a horse to water but can’t make it drink!

The impact of loading and associated results are obvious to see, if you want too look! There are many other factors:

- mid game injuries, particularly  as we lost a few defensive talls (mentioned multiple times during Freo, Swans & Pies matches)

- injuries in general

- across a 22 game season all teams will have natural ups & downs. If we have a down day against another team having an up day, losses will happen

- some teams match up well on other teams 

- Lady Luck, sometimes things go wrong, from bounce of ball, umpiring decisions, goalkicking, mid game injuries

- a simple favourite on this site is effort, yes due to length of a 22 game season, so can’t be up every week

But when all said & done, Demons and Goodwin know that finals is a different season, we’re been preparing for over a month with loading to be ready to be at our best in September. Injury willing and a little bit of luck, Thursday showed our best is still better than anyone else, so Demons are putting themselves in position for a big crack at going back to back! This is why Max won’t play against Crows!

Go Demons, fingers crossed we’re on the way to back to back!!

I find the Lions to be a heavy scragging side, with a lot of grabbing/pushing of players without the ball, designed to give them first use of the ball. In a low free kick game that would usually work to their advantage.

Also the diving and acting of Joe is laughable to get his soft free kicks.
