I was at home watching the Tele and it sure sounded the majority were dees supporters. It is always hard to see on TV because the majority would be in the northern stands that TV does not capture. But the sound suggested we had the biggest numbers. I am getting used to watching on TV and as the next 5 games are away games and only available on TV I doubt I will not get to a game before mid August it might only be finals appearances. Out of the last eight games only two are at the G and they are both night games. Thank God for Kayo

As an AFL member who alternates between AFL Members and behind the Melbourne Cheer Squad AND Olympic Stands, I can say that the crowd was probably 55;45 Melbourne's way. BUT Brisbane were undoubtedly louder. And more confined. Strong performing interstate teams (GC and GWS aside) always get a good showing. Especially Brisbane and Sydney. I think our attendance as a support base this year has been okay... we are lucky to have played a lot of top 8-10 sides in home games.

Do you mean the same side who were coming off an 11 day break (including the mandatory four days away from the club), to our 9 day break?

I'm no sports scientist, but i'm guessing they might have recovered from their 'big month of travel' by last night's game.

As for the second point, not sure if you are serious. Did we watch the same game?

We were ferocious in the first quarter from the get go - and clearly energised. And we sustained that energy from minute one of the game 'till the end of the game. 

Did that mean we smashed them from the start?

No of course not - the lions were terrific in the first 20 minutes of the game and their pressure was formidable (which makes sense of course, as the first 20 minutes of the game would be when they would feel the least impact of any loading, just as was the case for us in our three losses).

We had a clear strategy to use handball to chain away from contests (a strategy we employed in our Anzac eve clash against the tigers last year) - and under the lions' pressure we missed quite a few and handball chains broke down, creating turnovers. But that wasn't a function of us not being enegerised, it was a function of the pressure and heat the lions brought. 

As i noted earlier in this thread, it was clear to me we were fresh and energized for this game, when in the last 10 minutes of the first quarter we were able to first blunt the lion's momentum, but more importantly, then lift our rating, start closing the vice and suffocating the lions, as we do when we are at our best. And in this same period the lions started to fade.

The lead up to the goal Harmes kicked with 90 seconds to go in the first quarter was incredible. That was right below me, and the dees fought like caged lions to trap it inside our 50 and scrap for the ball that eventually kicked out to Harmes. 

Do you want some more evidence of our high energy levels in the first? 

At the end of the first quarter, we led forward-half groundballs 17 to 6 and forward-half contested possessions overall 26 to 11.

We led inside 50s 12-10 and clearances were even at 7-7.

I don't know the end of quarter contested possession numbers, but the lions had 31 fewer contested possessions in the first half, their worst first-half differential since Round 5, 2016, which would suggest that that we were ahead, or at the very least break even for cps in the first quarter.

But i would be very surprised if we were not ahead for CPs at the end of the first quarter given the half time CP differential and the fact we were 26 to 11 forward-half cps at the end of the first quarter.

Hardly numbers to suggest we lacked energy in the first quarter, or that the 'loading theory' didn't kick in till the second quarter.

But hey, we all see the game differently.

As for this point, it really interests me too why the 'experts' (many of whom have coached and played at the highest level) wouldn't be giving loading and its impact a lot more air time through the media.

Energy level go up and down for a variety of reasons and the loading talk has for whatever reason become the main talking point. 

You post too many times a day for me to trawl back through posts. And it's not even "a lot more" airtime. It's "any". 

Aside from Chris Scott talking about it, I haven't heard it talked about once from any relevant ex player and now commentator. Lewis, Reiwoldt, Montagna, Hodge, Watson etc etc. 

Why?

Buckley last week after Geelong mentioned it commented along the lines of ‘Geelong have chosen to put an extra load in over the last month and will have to endure the effects of that for the time being but it will hopefully hold them in good stead at the back end of the year’

What I loved about last night - it was clearly a statement win.  Not only for the rest of the league but also for Melbourne.  Yes, we started the year with 10 straight wins, but apart from the GWS game, none of them were what I would call Melbourne in its form.  They looked like they were coasting, barely getting out of second gear.  I wasn't necessarily worried, though because it's a long season, and it needs to be treated like a marathon, not a sprint.  

Then we lost to Freo.  Again, not worried, it was the loss the team needed to have, as a reality check.  The Sydney loss, though, was frustrating, because they could have played so much better.  The Collingwood game?  That one left me despondent.

But last night was a return to the form of 2021.  They didn't just win, they crushed.  That was a statement win.

I heard Goody address it in his presser but the excitement & comaradarie was back. Probably didn't see it on the tv but when we kicked goals the backline fist pumped or clapped or the midfielders did the same thing & players got around each other more.

BM, apparently JG was a “high level player”, maybe you need to be an “elite level player” to understand what is going on? Who knows, but either way I wouldn’t waste your time arguing with him.

if he is waiting for Lewis, Riewoldt, Montagna, Hodge and Watson to provide him confirmation of what has been going on, he will probably catch on after this current group win their 3rd or 4th flag.

There were a lot of Brisroy Bears supporters at a private function upstairs at the Tippler pre game. Some of them looked old enough to have been watching them when they were called the Gorillas. 

I was a little surprised to see the crowd number when it appeared on the screen as level 2 in the Olympic Stand was half empty again. The noise level was ok though. It wasn't exactly Ibrox on a european night but ok for us.

Agree. Seeing him in the side always makes me feel a bit more confident.

 

I know I'm late to the party because almost everyone has mentioned it, but bloody hell Viney played a corker. Do you think he enjoys being the "leader of men"?

And Bedford looks to be playing himself into finals contention. He adds another dimension to our forward line.

Can we keep this up over the next few weeks to cement a top 2 spot? Would love to avoid Freo in Perf come the finals.

I'm aware you've been piled on already, but just wanted to say I watched the game on TV and the crowd sounded great: vocal and definitely pro-Melbourne.

Agreed, but I gave him two years until the end of that bumpy road. Golly, it's good to consider on his current form a few more years than that ahead of him. What and energy-draining test it was against Brizzy! Flying colours come to mind on the quality of his efforts and results.
