Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Farewell Luke Jackson

The Eagles situation is very, very interesting. They sold their future for Tim Kelly, and now their list profile is horribly out of whack.

Luke is a gun, but they’d have to give up at least 2 potential guns to get him. And then that leaves them further out of whack. Whose he going to be playing with in Perth in 4 years? All their best will be well gone. Meanwhile every list manager is trying to mimic us and get ‘waves’ of players coming through together. They’d be better off trying to turn pick 1 and 19 into say 4, 7 and something early 20’s.

Even if we went to the draft, the likelihood of finding a tall of his quality is very low.

We are devoid for young key position/tall talent. 2 first round picks (most likely mids) =/= a high quality developing mobile ruck forward.

I do believe some of our star talent leaving is inevitable at some point in future though

Where would West Coast get a second top 10 pick from? How would Freo get two top 10 picks?

Brayshaw is a free agent, absolute best case scenario is we maybe get pick 19 for him.

Brayshaw is a RFA meaning we can match terms and force a trade. If Cerra is going for pick 6 I think we can easily demand something in that range as well. At least in the 8 - 12 range as he is a little older.

I agree it's hard seeing two top 10 picks for Jackson, particularly since West Coast will need special approval to trade their first round pick since they are required to use it this year. But we can demand a high price for him regardless and I have faith we will get a good deal if Jackson does request a trade, it may have to involve other clubs. If it's freo they will have to get creative as well with their picks in the teens not being anywhere near adequate.

I hope both players stay and render this discussion moot though.

Agree with the first bit Nascent, but I would like to see this discussion mute.

There's already another megathread discussing Dogga's future that's all guesswork and speculation.

If he does happen to go, I can't see us in our list situation being able to offer anywhere near what a rival will tbh. Pert has already talked about players taking cuts. Cerra is 22 and wasn't a free agent, not sure it's comparable.

But a 'good deal' is really dependent on how those picks turn out and what impact they can have to replace the unique things Jackson brings that has seen us win a flag. We're in our window now, sure plan for the future, but maximizing our current list ,including 4 key position players who only have a couple of years left, is vital IMO.

Yep. They aren’t in a position to get Jackson. They need to rebuild. Shelling up quality picks for Jackson would just leave them with a young gun ruck and nothing to surround him with. That isn’t smart trading. They would know this. Doesn’t mean they still won’t do the smart thing. It’s west coast. They have been extremely poor in long term list management.

Preuss is playing like such a beast at the moment. If we knew Jackson was leaving we would've held onto Preuss. But if we were to lose Jackson I'd rather lose him now than in 2-3 years time. Getting some key position talent for life after May and Ben Brown/Mcdonald etc. would be much needed.

Van Rooyen looks a 2nd tall to me.

If we were just talking about his ruck role, ye, we'd let him go as you can bring in a mature ruck from another club, and if he breaks even you can build around that.  But is value and importance around the ground is immense, that a "ruck" often does not achieve and we should hang onto him as that is what separates him from many other rucks int he comp.

You are right of course OD. I seem to recall that Kennedy was reluctant to return to W.A. I'll modify my question:

In the AFL era, how many West Australians have left Victoria willingly, accepting big bucks in their first contract in WA, and had good, long careers? I must admit, I can't think of one.

kelly?

I wonder, has he delivered value for money IYO so far Daisycutter? I'd respectfully suggest that the Eagles would be less that satisfied with their return to date.

I agree Daisycutter.

I s'pose my point is, regarding Jackson, that the examples of players 'going home' by choice to W.A. on significant coin, and delivering against expectations, are limited, if not, non-existent.

what about the wiz?

i know it was different due to new startups. lots of natives returned to wa/sa when the afl was created, many on good coin.

What could?

Yep fair question. I think I meant I would be concerned about the effect on the team harmony with any quality player leaving unless it was done as last course of action to take.

This has all gone very quiet. Im hoping we hear that there is significant movement soon.. its r11 and he has no contract for next year.. should we be starting to get a little bit worried?

If we offered him a long term contract right now it would be for peanuts as we wouldn't have significant amounts of cap space.

Also, you can't offer a kid long term deals based on potential.  Yes he has shown some great moments and we're all excited by what he might bring but you save that kind of cap space and contract term for your proven A Graders.  Gawn, Trac, Salem and what will definitely be Clarry next year.

2-3 years protects both parties as if he's good enough then and taking the league by storm, he'll demand an even bigger contract which we'd find a way to get sorted.  I'd rather gamble on the fact that once he's a gun we need to pay overs to retain him rather than paying someone overs now based on potential.

Like it or lump it, there is every chance he could be a man child and may have peaked early in his career like a Darling or Hogan.  Or even someone like Rory Lobb who, without meaning to offend, is just a solid B grader..

I'd rather us lose a player who has the potential to be great over one that is already great and proven (Clarry next year).

TMac will have to retire, soon. Same with the Melk. Gawny is getting on in years, Hibberd is, as well. Even May and BB are pushing a great deal out of their Weet Bix. The font of human kindness and cash does actually have a starting date in the near future; at that moment, we could be offering Jackson more than the Eagles ever would. He's a home-boy and the MFC has provided him with security and far more than just a roof over his head. He won't be tempted, elsewhere.

Way over rated right now, if we can get 2 first rounders we should run for the hills.

Use one on Mac Andrew and the other for our midfield depth. We fall off a cliff with Oliver and Petracca neutralised and need more talent in the guts.

I agree with you. West Coast number 1 pick sounds nice.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
