Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

AFLW List Changes 2022

Brenna Tarrant (15 games, pick 72 in the 2019 draft) has requested and received a trade to Sydney after failing to hold her spot in 2022.

No surprises here - she's too talented for VFLW and will get plenty of opportunities at Sydney, plus a move home to NSW.

Other trade and signing news is slow due to everything waiting on the CBA and broadcasting negotiations.

I guess the only player 100% confirmed so far is Daisy!

I’m hoping the crows lose some players. Erin Phillips has already left for port. There was talk of harchard leaving. Hope she does. I don’t see us winning a premiership unless the crows lose more key players

They've lost a couple more (Mules and Foley) but neither would be considered key players at this stage.

100% BDA.  To date Adelaide have had a huge recruiting advantage compared to the Victorian clubs, with SA being a one team 'town'.

Now Parry is going too. If we keep losing the fringiest of players expansion will have done no harm to us.

Yeah, I don't think anyone here will be surprised or overly concerned by this.

Of course, just watch her start clunking everything and kicking bags wherever she ends up.

She had that one three goal game... and about three more in the other 20. Never went near it this year.

I'm interested to see what happens with Shelley Scott. She has had a very good career but looked shot this season.

Yes, Parry looking elsewhere is not surprising.  Where is she going?

TRex is joining Hawthorn, having come out of retirement.

The next step in the evolution of this competition is to allow for longer term contracts.

The stronger teams are extremely exposed having most of their lists come off contract each year. It's not right that you can put years of development into players and expansion clubs can come in and grab them for nothing.

At the very least you should be able to offer 3-4 year deals to a small number of players (say 5)

Parry has been linked to Geelong I believe.

All the focus on Tayla should have helped out players like Scott and Parry, but it clearly didn't. Hopefully Scott can be re-energised for one last crack.

I know West Coast & Gold Coast aren't new teams, bur I would also argue that Fremantle, Brisbane and even GWS have benefitted from being the first teams in their respective markets.

The big one is Harris, does she chase coin at the expansion clubs or stick fat with Melbourne.  To me she really looked happy this season enjoying playing and her team mates.

I hadn't even thought of Harris as being a risk of leaving.

I think she left Brisbane to come to Victoria, not chase money.

And it's pretty clear she did not gel with Carlton as a club. The money demand was leaked by Carlton but was also a request for a full time job year round at the club as well as the footy. I don't think that is an unreasonable sort of request given the situation those women find themselves in.

But ever since she crossed to the Dees she has been absolutely embraced and seems a much loved part of the group. She also seems really down to earth tbh.

Hard to blame any of these players for seeking regular game time, particularly when they have come from interstate and uprooted their lives for a wage that is hardly life changing. Hopefully our list management team have some aces up their sleeves in terms of replacements.

I'm amazed that none of the expansion clubs have come after our second tier players (Zanker, Mithen, Gay, etc). Or maybe they have and they've been knocked back.

Didn't realise she only played 4 games.  I guess I'm getting her confused with another player.

As for Tayla Harris, I think our culture is better from the snippets we have seen, i.e the coach of the year award vid.  Also as a group they a close to winning the GF  for the first time which will hold them together.  Even over the last few years we don't have massive movement of our players compared to other clubs.

Yeah, for these players it's often a choice being made in order to continue to play AFLW in the long term or even short term.

I think Petrevski's got plenty to contribute, we just didn't get to see her best at the Dees due to injury and lack of opportunity. She's made some major sacrifices from a young age to follow her footy and I'm sure she'll get another go.

The departures so far (Tarrant, Parry and Petrevski) have basically been those right on the fringe last season, which stands to reason. There are only a couple yet to debut on the list at this stage. Despite the strong season the coaches have managed, assisted by Covid, to have a look at what we've got.

Interestingly, with those departures, apart from the Irish players and Harris, we now have a completely Victorian list.

Age breakdown for the current list of 27 is:

18-21 = 8 players

22-25 = 12

26-29 = 3

30-33 = 2

34+ = 2

New story on the AFLW website regarding likely player movements, with as many as 60 movements expected in the coming weeks.

As we know, Tarrant to Sydney, Parry likely to Geelong and Petrevski to West Coast.

Tahlia Fellowes from Casey VFLW has been signed by Hawthorn. Not sure if we've missed one there.

The article also says "Jordan Ivey is expected to land at Melbourne". I don't know much about her, other than that the Geelong website says she is 29 and was vice captain this year.

Key Dates

AFL expansion signing period 24 May 2022

Sign and trade period 31 May 2022

NAB AFLW draft 29 June 2022.

One player we should get more out of is Purcell. Seems to have taken all season to under perform and injury recovery may well be the reason.
Hopefully she can have a great pre season.
lMO both Petrevski and Fellowes from Casey AFLW are both small crumbing types and I believe that is a weakness when you see similar types in Crows and Lions with pace disrupt defences with their style. Bannon does it for us but not quite the same method and a clever small is a must up forward I believe.
Mae should target someone.

Agree, we need some spark in that role and I thought Fellows was an obvious fit - has played a great VFLW season at Casey, tohugh I guess that's over now.

Left field, but Heath played up forward this week at VFLW. She's so important in the backline, so not sure about that as a long-term idea, but think of the forward pressure.

Hopefully the recruiters have something up their sleeve.

"Blues defender Charlotte Wilson is set to add to reigning Grand Finalist Melbourne’s hopes of a maiden AFLW flag. Wilson, a 21-year-old intercept defender who has impressed throughout the early stages of her Carlton career, will then head to Melbourne as the Demons look to strengthen key pillars at either end in their chase for a maiden flag."

Key defence is one of our weaknesses, so anything we can do to bolster that part of the field is a good thing.

@Dees_In_October

Would like your thoughts on the rules around losing players to the new teams:

Each player in the competition has been assigned a points value which is calculated based on age, payment tier, career games and any awards they might have won. To keep their first round draft pick for the upcoming NAB AFLW Draft, existing clubs must lose a total of 28 points worth of players'.

That looks quite Draconian.  Losing a first round pick is very harsh, especially if the target is missed because players don't want to be traded.

Other rules are listed in this article:  how-many-players-can-each-club-lose-expansion-rules-explained

Any idea what players we are at risk of losing or would be ok letting go?

And what happens if we trade our first round pick to get Charlotte Wilson or others, but don't lose any more players to expansion clubs?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
