So much wrist slitting.

We conceded 35 points

We are 4 and 0

Plenty of people have short memories, not long ago we were rubbish.  This was a complete defensive effort

We conceded 35 points because they did not kick straight if they had it would have been far different, we only had 2 scoring shots more than they did and they had a whole range of good players out. I must say i was disappointed we did not do better. definitely some good defense and running but our entry into the forward line was pretty disappointing. We showed such dominance at times but could not put it on the score board, that is where it counts.

[censored] you Melbourne. That was a trash display of footy.

Had the opportunity to really put the foot down but instead we tried to be too cute with our ball use going forward. 3 weeks in a row now that we've just played sloppy and let opposition back into the game.

Are McDonald and Weideman actually for real?? 2nd week in a row where they've had opportunity to cement their spot while Brown is out and both failed miserably.

Both could barely give a contest or bring the ball to ground. Sooner these two are phased out for good the better.

Petracca is a star and all but [censored] hell he's sloppy and selfish at times.

Thank God for Steven May.

Percentage won't matter if we never lose again.

We clearly put the cue in the rack at the end of the game, and if you don't believe that, Ed Langdon was on the bench at the end of the game.

Yeah I knew we were done when Eddy came off. It was all over.

Happy we won.  But that would have to be up there with the single worst game of footy I've seen, purely from an entertainment point of view.

Did enough to win, amazing defensive effort but the forward line (and kicking into it) needs a lot of work.

When we killed them off it was because our kicks forward were long and deep and out their backline under pressure.

It’s a massive shame we lost a lot of percentage in the last quarter

We are a good side now. Our defence all over the ground was great, and we ran the game out. I will take 4-0 any time. Even though our system continues to be a bit clunky and imperfect, we win and win well.

I hated the feel of our play in the last 15 minutes - looked like they absolutely switched off.

Some signs emerging that our forward 50 play needs an efficiency upgrade.  A LOT of ineffective, sloppy forward entries.

Brilliant win. I didn't for a second feel worried throughout the entire match. There's no point in complaining about the last 15 minutes. Beating a side by 5 goals in front of their home crowd is always an accomplishment in my book.

Gawn was absolutely phenomenal. He's looking like himself again. Harmes continues to silence his doubters. His last two games have been excellent.

slow boring football not good great in prime time slot

Yeah I thought we were poor leading into tonight, but it was a slow grind tonight, and I think we’re probably on the up now. The majority of last year our forward entries weren’t great, but we were winning. It was only in the last few games of the season we got it right and didn’t look back. I think we’ll get it right earlier this year. We are coming good now.

SACK GOODWIN amirite?

Far out. The bar has gone through the roof with some of you people. It was a good, strangling win. Not great, not particularly exciting - the Jordon touch on the line was the only time my heart rate got above resting, but we got the job done.

I'm just waiting for someone to say we're the worst 4-0 side of all time or something.

Burn the tapes of that one.

Backline very good.

Midfield patchy, credit the fringe guys who cleaned up after the big names consistently.

Forward line very messy.

This is exactly what we were saying this time last year.

We were 50 points up with 10 minutes to go.

We're coming off six day breaks including two trips (from GC, and then to Adelaide).

We gave Langdon a rest on the bench late. That tells you all you need to know - we were not busting our gut completely late.

We were dominant. Yes, disappointing we didn't blow them to pieces and there were a few frustrating moments, but we toyed with them. Now we're 4-0 and we've already ticked off two interstate trips.

May outstanding (but for that late dropped mark), loved Jordon's game, Gawn found form, Brayshaw put in another great game in defence, Harmes was solid and Lever got through well.

Neither Weid nor TMac were any good. I don't mind who gets dropped for Brown, but there should be no doubt that one goes. Pickett is doing a lot defensively but just cannot get in form with ball in hand. And I'm still not convinced by Hunt.

Bowling shoe ugly.

I usually write lengthier reviews, but I want that match out of sight and out of mind.

I’ll take the four points, but a spectacle of entertainment it was not. My attitude to this match was similar to Homer’s retrospective approach to the shortcut to Itchy and Scratchy Land.

JUNGLE KINGS by George On The Outer

The top of the table Brisbane Lions came into their game against Melbourne thinking they were kings of the AFL Jungle. However, by game’s end they were shown to be toothless, as the rampant Demons gave them a lesson about the exact level you have to be at to justify that mantle.  The first quarter saw Brisbane squander some easy chances in front of goal, which kept Melbourne within striking distance and, as a result, the Lions led by a mere goal. Of course, it could have been so much d

A STEP FORWARD? by The Oracle

The winds of change have blown through the Melbourne Football Club over the past month or so as the team previously known for applying relentless pressure on opponents dramatically fell from its pedestal to a low not seen for some three years. This is a team that had the luxury of going through last season with one of the healthiest lists in the competition. And that health was not only reflected in a weekly injury list that revealed very few key players missing, but importantly, even fewer

HUMBLE PIE by George on the Outer

Seventeen wins in a row followed by a trio of losses.  The invincible Demon juggernaut was simply humbled by the Pies in that third loss, as once again they gave up an early three goal plus lead, to be over-run in the end. Is it loading? Perhaps. Is it the loss of players? Perhaps More likely, they are a combination of the two. Certainly, we have seen the side take an early lead in all of these games only to fade as reflected on the scoreboard where Melbourne has been outscored

EARLY FREEZE by KC from Casey

If the publicity ahead of Queens Birthday Monday was all about the Big Freeze and the game to follow the pre-game entertainment then the hardy group that braved the country’s cold snap to travel out to the windy plains beyond Cranbourne were given an early taste of what was to come in the Casey's big 52-point win over Collingwood VFL. The day started well with the Demons comprehensively beating the VFLW Magpies in the curtain-raiser elimination final and then their male counterparts donned

THE CURSE by Norm Smith’s Ghost

Melbourne’s fortunes took a dramatic turn for the worst on the day the Anthony Albanese was elected as Prime Minister. Since that fateful day, Steven May pinged his hamstring early in the match against the Dockers, Harry Petty came off the ground in consecutive games feeling the worse for wear, it was revealed that Tom McDonald’s foot was in messy shape, the Herald Sun exclusively reported that two years ago, Demon committee members exchanged emails critical of the team after it lost a game by 5

BANGED UP by George On The Outer

Melbourne v Sydney. City v City. Two top eight sides fighting for finals spots.  Sydney having beaten the Demons in ten of their last twelve encounters.    In what would turn out to be one of the most hotly contested games for the club in 2022, the physical damage to players was probably the deciding factor in the end.   Once again, Melbourne lost Tom McDonald pre-game to a yet unspecified foot injury.  More importantly was how much his work up the ground and bullocking influ

    TEN by KC from Casey

The slippery surface of the MCG was a minor detail for the Casey Demons as they waltzed away from the Sydney Swans to record their tenth win on end in their Saturday afternoon curtain raiser. The Demons conceded the first goal of the game before recording the next three (two to Sam Weideman) to hold a 16 point lead at the first break before the Swans pegged that back to a mere three points at half time. Casey dominated the third term with four goals to nil and thereafter the Swans’ resistan

    THE COMEBACK by Whispering Jack

How will Melbourne react to losing a game after such a long time since tasting defeat? That question is on everybody’s lips after the complete collapse of the team in the second half against Fremantle last week. When Bayley Fritsch missed his shot at goal 23 minutes into the second term, the Demons were 30 points ahead but from that point onward they were comprehensively overwhelmed as their structures fell apart all over the park. Unlike what occurred on a number of occasions during their

SURVIVAL MODE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons managed to survive a day of challenges that in many ways mirrored their AFL counterpart Narrm from the previous day but Casey emerged undefeated from their Round 10 encounter with Frankston at Skybus Stadium. Like the Demon seniors they were undermanned and lost players due to late withdrawals, went through an arm wrestle in the first quarters, took over the game in the second to set up a big lead before a late goal gave hope to their opponent and limped through a last half

DEES-MANTLED by George On The Outer

Well the streak has finally ended, but in the worst possible way, when Fremantle absolutely dismantled Melbourne to record an emphatic 38 point win. This ended the 17 game winning streak of the Demons, but worse to report was that Melbourne led the game by nearly 5 goals in the second quarter, before the Dockers banged through 10 straight goals. In fact they kicked 13 goals to 1 from that point just before half time. So what happened?  Melbourne aren’t accustomed

    DISMANTLE by The Oracle

The Flagmantle dynasty has been in train for less than half a season but on Saturday evening at the MCG its hopes are set to be derailed when it meets the team from Narrm. If you’re still living back in the days before the start of the 2022 AFL season then my opening comment probably makes very little sense. This is because very few people had heard of Narrm at the time and most folk could not then have anticipated the AFL’s early season rise of the Fremantle Dockers whose fans went into r

THE CALM OF NARRM by George On The Outer

In a fitting opening to the Doug Nicholls Round, the haunting voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu spread calm around a near empty, misty Docklands stadium. Meanwhile, the Narrm players, quietly warming up pre-game, seemed to take on the same calmness for their upcoming task against North Melbourne.   Sure, this was the top of the ladder premiership side playing the lowly cellar dweller, but this Demons side is now one who just quietly go about their job, and slowly ever so slowly and ca
