Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

May leap frogs Clarry to take the lead (just) for the first time in season 2022.  Tracc up two places from last week into 3rd and Viney jumps three places into 4th, neck and neck with Harmes to round out the top 5.  Pretty sure both Jackson and Maxy would be ahead of Viney & Harmes if hit outs to advantage could somehow be captured.

Round 6, 2022 MCG (Anzac Eve) - Tigers vs Demons

Even with so many missed opportunities last night's team score was a massive 71.40 which was 6% above the average team score from season 2021!   Pretty much matching our best score from all rounds last season which strangely enough was also this same Rnd 6 vs The Tigers @ 71.93  Also bettering our Grand Final performance of 69.50 for the second week running.

However, the conversion rate was a massive 47% less than last week (76%) at a pretty ordinary 29%.

Clarry returns to the top this round with 27 effectives @ 65.90% efficiency, 2 one percenters, 13 clearances (next best was Prestia with 6 and for us Sparrow with 5), 3 rebounds, 9 inside 50s, 3 tackles (one inside 50), 10 score involvements (equal second best for us on the night alongside Tracc with ANB having the most with 11.  The best on the night the Tiger's Vlastuin with 13), 4 intercepts, 684 meters gained and a moderate 5 turnovers.

A fabulous game from Lingers as well posting a massive score (for this role / position) of 5.45

Very impressive (statistically) first up result from Dunstan to finish inside the top 10!

Top 5 Meters gained (Demons).... Clarry 684 (second behind Short of the Tigers who had a massive 763), Langdon 599, Sparrow 489, Tracc 437 & May 413

Round 7, 2022 MCG - Demons vs Hawks

Maxy BOG for the second week running for mine with Tracc just nudging him out for the No.1 place on these tables.

Would usually add approx 0.75 to Maxy's score as a rough estimate for hit outs to advantage (with that many hit outs anyway).  This would bring him up on par with Clarry and just a tad behind Tracc with a score of 5.50 tonight.

Tracc's top of the table on here included... 26 effectives @ 83.9% efficiency, 2 marks inside 50, 3 clearances (Maxy the most for us with 9!), 3 rebounds, 8 inside 50s (equal with Clarry...some pretty wasteful entries from both though from memory?), 2 tackles, 10 score involvements, 637 meters gained (second only to Maysie), a moderate 4 turnovers plus a goal.

Really loved Bowza's first half tonight and aside from a few too many turnovers afterwards i thought he played another VG game.  Shout out to Weid for his third quarter ruck effort in the middle.  Some very nice tap work i thought and managed to get more involved after a pretty quiet first half.  I also thought plugger Mac really stepped up in the third and showed he still has some value to add.  Just wish he had of let the Harmes goal go through.  Would have been in the goals of the week for sure.

Yes, last year we were 1st in tackles and 1st in tackles inside 50, this year 16th and =4th.

Here are the average tackles per match this year compared to last year (values in brackets are the number matches played):

It is not the sort of drop off that you expect from a defensive oriented team.

While the (general) tackle stat is one indicator of pressure and sure we are well off our overall position last year, i would not discount that this might be by design vs an actuall drop off.

By design i mean the FD may have asked for a certain level / system to be played and met by the boys.  Given our results/ladder position we would appear to have well and truly implememted / met the level & methods being asked so far.

Some of these aspects being asked might be more critical to efficiency of ball usage and movement out of & away from stoppage/congestion.  Including efficiency of transition off HB such as cleaner ball use, utilising space a tad better, presenting to the right places & effective delivery etc.

Defensively the FD might be asking a tad less of most players from a general tackle count at this early phase of the season....preferring instead to build and bring the heat slowly as the season progesses, ensuring more players have more left in the tank for some of the bigger matches to come??

Also if the boys are turning the wick up on efricency of ball movement, winning contested at a high level et al then it might also explain the lower general tackle count vs 2021 as we are in possession much more of the time??  The time in possesion stat might be handy here!

In a defensive aspect it would appear we are keeping the forward half pressure up by the looks of the inside 50 tackle count vs last season or at least, not very far off our best of last season.

Pressure acts inside 50 (averages) and scores from turnovers inside 50 would also be interesting to know vs last season.

While it is a fact the general tackle stat is off i would like to think this has more to do with good management and well designed playing styles/methods & executions (uncluding talent) vs a lack of willingness from some (or many) players to bring enough heat till now.

It would be interesting to compare the tackle averages pre bye vs roughly 6 to 8 rounds post the bye and see how we sit both individually and in a team averages sense vs the rest of the comp.

All up we are leading in so many other key aspects of the game.

+20 in stoppage clearances the last two weeks one nice example.

No.1 in contested possession averages differential as per 2021.

Improved one place in uncontested possessions differential from 7th in 2021 to 6th at the moment.

No.1 in meters gained differential as per 2021.

Average meters gained is up by 200 meters a game vs 2021.

Obviously Sam Mitchell saw this part as a huge asset he needed to try and curb as much as possible which he did successfully last week by locking down Lingers who had only 178 meters gained vs a massive 599 the previous week vs the Tiges.  In a team sense we went from 6305 meters to 5960 vs the Hawks.

My only concern might be that i am wrong about all of the design aspects above and maybe, just maybe, a few too many  players are coasting a little too easy on the pressure front (aside from what happens inside 50!??) and might be leaning a little too much on our amazing defensive linemen & zoning system to always save the day.

Hopefully not the latter and would be very surprised if this were the case.

The way the record tackles isn't always consistent with what supporters expect either. The official definition is:

Using physical contact to prevent an opponent in possession of the ball from getting an effective disposal.

And Effective Disposals are defined as:

A handball to a teammate that hits the intended target; or

A kick of more than 40 metres to a 50/50 contest or better for the team or a kick of less than 40 metres that results in the intended target retaining possession.

So if you grab and take someone to ground or spin then around and around, but they handball off, it isn't recorded as a tackle. This happens a lot in close quarters.

If they slap it on the boot as you tackle and it goes 40 m it probably isn't a tackle.

If you gang tackle, everyone involved gets a stat.

So it is possible we are creating pressure without getting credited with tackles. Corralling players into ineffective disposal perhaps. Or tackling players unsuccessfully (they handball off but still creates pressure) and then the final player fumbles without the tackle being applied. Or perhaps we are starting out of the contest and having one person tackles instead of 2 or 3 person tackles.

Unfortunately, it's a case of "they don't give us the real stats".

Thanks, it would be interesting to know which measures the club uses, and how we compare acros the comp…

The club would have a whole bunch of other stats, which I'm pretty sure champion data records but doesn't release. I haven't seen the stats but I would expect measures like:

Total tackle attempts: self explanatory

Ineffective tackles: the tackle sticks but they get an effective disposal

Broken tackle: physical contact is made but the attacker breaks free

Missed tackle: player tried to tackle but doesn't grasp or gets side stepped or tries with one arm only.

They'd also have data on the types of "pressure act" like corralling a player with a ball, instead of just group them all in as "pressure acts".

Yeh Deanox has pretty much covered the fact that club's analysts (i would guess more so than coaches / line coaches) would be drilling down with more detailed specifics vs the basics we see.

Would be surprised if the old 'tackle stat' is used much at all.  The "effective tackles" stat superseded that many years ago is my understanding.

One of the non public ones i would love to get hold of is the player kick rating showing how effective player's are at hitting up targets under various match situations & pressure ratios.

Round 9, 2022 OPTUS - Eagles vs Demons

Some game from Jack!  Very briefly, 24 effectives @ 88.9% (when has Jack ever gone that efficiently!?), 7 clearances, 3 one percenters, 2 rebounds, 12 tackles (3 of those inside 50), 7 score involvements, 5 intercepts and only 3 turnovers.

Kozzie finding some good form and loved the game from Plugga, especially his mark against McGovern in the last quarter.

ANB BOG in the first quarter?

JJ very reliable and overall probably played one of his best games.  My only criticism...missed a couple of obvious handballs (over the top) to a free Spargo just forward of the wing which would have seen Spargo running it in to 50.  Instead JJ ignored the Spargo option and kicked shallow to a forward flank where the Eagles easily defended.  Spargo is our best ball user coming inside so hope the coach reviews this aspect with JJ at some stage.

Another impressive game from Gus.

Top 5 meters gained (MFC):  Jordan 612 (most for either team), Gus 496, Tracc 466, May 464 & Langdon 433.

Round 10, 2022 Marvel - Blues vs Swans

While one match doesn't make a summer i thought i'd take a look at the Blues tonight.  Their team score was 1.9% higher than our 2021 season average and just above our average score this season by 0.5%.  Ok so they didn't play us but they still played a top 8 (potential top four) contender, so it's not like they played an also ran club.

They're certainly flying at the moment and more than likely (subject to injury issues like most clubs) going to cement a place in the top four with a strong chance of playing off in a prelim (at least).

Appear to have a pretty leaky defence.  They also have a pretty inexperienced team overall with no player having played over 150 games tonight & 9 rookies (less than 50 games).  I would assume most of them have very little finals experience as well.

Having said that, experience didn't seem to help the Swans tonight.  With five players having 150 plus games experience although they also had ten rookies in the team (and i believe history says that with ten or more rookies you really struggle to beat a team with less rookies than you in any given match unless they also have 10 or higher).

Round 10, 2022 Marvel - Kangaroos vs Demons

Clarry a mile in front of the rest of the pack...once again!  Tonight's performance eerily similar to that of his performance in this same round last season vs the Crows, where he almost won the game single-handedly.

Tonight's performance was certainly amazing but not quite to the level of the one against the Crows (statistically) where he tallied a massive career high score of 8.40

Let's take a look at some of his incredible work this evening...

30 effective disposals @ 66.70%, 1 contested, one 1%er, 13 clearances, 13 inside 50s, 6 tackles (2 inside 50), 6 score involvements, 5 intercepts, only 3 turnovers and a very healthy 621 meters gained (2nd most on the night behind North's McDonald with 640).
