Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The documentary was OK IMV but not brilliant. I guess they were hamstrung by the 75 minute length. You'd probably need a 4-parter to do justice to the last 57 years of history.

I liked the idea but personally would have preferred say 3 episodes of history with the  last episode focusing on 2021. They clearly had a narrative in mind and selected the bits to feature to fit the narrative. Haven't we all seen enough of the Norm Smith Curse and Jimmy running over the mark in 1987? They should be included in the back story but shouldn't be the entirety (along with the non-merger). If they're going to include Michael Hibberd's personal tragedy at least do it a bit of justice rather than just throwing it in for 30 seconds on the assumption that everybody already knows about it. I would have thought Troy Broadbridge's death was at least as worthy of inclusion.

What I liked:
- inclusion of some key events
- Robbie Flower & Jim Stynes' prominence
- some balance to the merger coverage (especially liked the fact that Ian Ridley was portrayed as being the great club man he actually was)
- the Vineys

What I didn't like:
- simplistic portrayal of history. You'd think that the entire 23 years on non-finals between 1964 & 1987 was due to Norm Smith being sacked. In reality it was largely due to zoning favouring the bigger clubs
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoning_(Australian_rules_football)
- where was the just-missed finals year of 1976?
- nothing about all the great players of the era (except Jim Stynes, Robbie Flower)
- as mentioned by others, no coverage of the earlier finals massacres of North & Sydney in 1987
- no coverage of the good years post-1988 to 2006, other than 2000 (Melbourne made Finals 12 out of 20 years). We beat Adelaide, the eventual premiers, first round of finals in 1998. 1994 Finals. The amazing Semi Final against Adelaide in 2002.
- a focus on the record losses against Fitzroy & Geelong but no nuance. Yes, we were horrible defensively when Dean Bailey was coach but we had some great wins. IMV he shouldn't have been sacked largely because of one record loss (we were 6 points outside the 8 even after that loss, and then lost 4 of our last 5 under Todd Viney)
- 2018. We had 2 great finals wins against Geelong & Hawthorn but apparently the only think that counts is the 1st half against West Coast in the Prelim
- Garry Lyon. I love Garry but is is actually possible to watch some Melbourne history without him being the expert? Like the  Premiminary Final. Apparently we can't just enjoy the game. The camera has to show Garry Lyons' reactions like they're in some way meaningful

In summary it annoys me that there is this false story of 57 years of misery between 1964 & 2021. In reality we had 23 years pre-1987 and then another 8 post-2006 (by 2015 we were clearly on the improve). We were wildly inconsistent within seasons and from one season to the next but with a bit of luck could definitely have won a premiership. Naturally none of this was communicated in the documentary.

Garry was a vessel for the fans that couldn’t make it and I will always remember vicariously living through him and him continuously sharing his experiences in those few weeks.

He is also so well spoken and understands big moments and can eloquently relay them in layman’s terms.

Mate. It was a short sharp production about our premiership with a bit of context to how much it meant, not a 2 hour episodes, 10 season epic on every single aspect of our history...

I enjoy Foxtel mostly for HBO shows.

As I said they were constrained by the 75 minutes. Just saying the way it could have been in a perfect world. They still had time to go though that old Norm Smith curse BS and Jim Stynes 15 metre penalty for the 1,000th time, including Garry Lyon running through a non-existent countdown for dramatic effect.

I said I love Garry. And he works for Fox Footy so I understand. I just don't think he has to be the sole focus just because he was once a great Melbourne player and is well-spoken. All I'm saying is just share it around a little.

Pity Darren Burgess wasn’t interviewed

Pity Adem Yze wasn’t interviewed

Pity Mark Williams wasn’t interviewed

Pity Peter Jackson wasn’t interviewed

Pity Paul Roos wasn’t interviewed

They were the people who changed the Clubs direction last year.
The first 30 minutes was wasted in my opinion, the last 40 minutes was very good

I agree with you that it's great being able to watch everything live or from the start (although I wish they's leave the scores off the top of the screen. Sometimes you accidentally get a peek). I also like the Kayo minis for when you're time-constrained or only mildly-intetested. However, it does annoy me the lack of historical content. e.g. I was goin to watch the 2 or 3 Casey games on there from 2021 to refresh myself on a couple of our developing players only to find they'd deleted that content to include a new tab for current peactice games. Plenty of room for both surely. You can go into the AFL website and get video of every match going back to 2013 if you're interested which is the way it should be with Kayo.

Pretty stock standard docu to be fair.

Did we learn anything that regular Demon fanatics wouldn't be aware of? Probably not. Ben Brown's legs shook on the bus before the big game and Daniher told Todd Viney he had to get running fit!

I don't know why the producers didn't interview some die hard fans. I reckon Demonland's pre and post grand final threads contain some pretty amazing insights into the psyche of a Melbourne supporter. That's where the real emotional connection for a video like this would be.

I learned that Trac is aware of the unearthly expression of steely resolve that was etched across his brow was after kicking that goal. Never seen a bloke more determined in my life.

1000% winning a flag is way better than birthing some life sucking monster.

Yep ... Recently I had to answer a question for some future online ID.
I couldn't find a question I liked liked until I saw "What was the best moment of your life?"

Ah easy ... "Melbourne flag" I wrote with my oldest monster peering over my shoulder.
"What? .... Not the birth of your children?" she asked horrified.

As I explained to her.
I've been waiting/hoping to see a Melbourne premiership my whole life.
Having kids was never real high on my priority list.

She knows what I'm like, has watched me roaring at games and the TV her whole life and handled it well 😅

I loved every minute of it, can’t get enough of our club we have plumbed the depths lived in everyone else’s shadows But we have arisen from those depths. Now it is our time to shine and enjoy the sunshine take time to smell the flowers but never forget our past because that is what makes it so bloody wonderful.!!

I heard from a good authority (ie close family member) that Norm Smith's disgust at the committee resulted from their failure to support him in legal action brought by an umpire.

Norm obviously felt that the club should support their coach in any football and match related issues and was naturally disappointed that the then committee would not. The committee failed Norm and all the supporters.

It was never the Norm Smith curse, it was always the curse of the faceless men that doomed us to 57 years of misery.

I think that was the culmination of it but the tension between Norm and the board had been brewing for a while. This issue just brought it to a head.

This is only short (and trigger warning for the posters that need it - It quickly covers a couple of those famous losses), but really well done and has a few new insights.

It was a Fox doco not an MFC doco though. It's made for the casual footy fans not the MFC diehards.

Ahh [censored].. I thought last night was good but I reckon this one is better. Wish it went longer.

The small snippets of Goody talking during the game is gold. Wish there was more of that.

I reckon that's Gus choking back tears at the end.

100% this is better.
Viney saying to Goody “I’m so glad you came to this club. I love you”. Oh man that was emotional.
And Kate saying to Goody “I thought”… I love her. She’s great!

Yep.

It's those little inside access that are seriously amazing. Goody's 3rd quarter time speech in calming the boys down with breathing exercise is priceless.

Thank you sooooo much for posting this, LN!!!
I loved hearing Goody at the 3/4 time huddle, and what he was saying as he hugged JV and Kate straight after the match. (Yeah, coz I needed another reason to cry 🙃). Also interesting to hear that Tracc was told beforehand that he’d won the Norm Smith, which makes sense coz he seemed super confident it was gonna be him and almost headed for the dais before his name was even called. 😁

What a quality leader we have at the MFC in Kate Roffey. So well spoken , it’s amazing how professional our club now collectively presents itself.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
