Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I’m just not sure why footballers owe us, the irrational and emotional supporters anything. The club and the league don’t show players loyalty, why do we expect it back. They are their own business/brand acting in a way that fits that description. In the world of modern sport the loyal athlete is the exception and the surprise. Him leaving doesn’t knock his integrity, it may create more and or better stories and relationships for himself, only he can figure that out. The future is unwritten. My values lie much closer to yours than what I am suggesting a modern athletes does but I am not an athlete with a short shelf life. It’s also easier to hold those values higher when you’ve lived a longer life, accumulated more wealth and had those experiences that get you to the well rounded place you find yourself. He is in his mid 20s with a brain that only just matured and took a hell of a beating along the way and is on his way to those experiences. We are irrational, emotional football supporters freaking out that we may not go back to back. I think he stays but if he doesn’t we will fall in love with the next guy.

Nice reply von - super classy. For many people, footy gives colour to our lives. And these dudes are the lead actors in that. Hence the emotion - and these players are very well aware of the significance and importance of that. They grew up supporting clubs too. It’s not an entirely mutual or fair contract. But there’s heaps of upside to them too in this footy arrangement, not necessarily all financial.

Let’s hope Brayshaw and Jackson commit to the cause, and for the right reasons.

If they don’t, in Jason Taylor I trust. I reckon we’ll be okay.

As an aside, I just watched the documentary on Sir Alex Ferguson - I used to hate the guy, that is - until I watched this movie. His son interviewed him. Sport is important - it’s not just a job. It’s a religion.

God bless the Dees.

Notionally, I'm not overly fussed if Brayshaw leaves, although I don't think he will.  He's never finished top 5 in our B&F and in terms of importance I wouldn't have him in our top ten players.  I rank him about twelth.  For me, he's behind Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, May, Lever, Fritsch, Salem, Viney, Langdon, Pickett, Jackson, and Petty (not in order).

He's a solid B grader, maybe B+.  He has no dash and doesn't create, but he's terribly brave, smart, and reliable.  Unlike DSpencer, I think his kicking off both feet has been very good this year.

I'd rather he stay because we won't get commensurate value if he leaves.

I attended a Q&A night with Brendan McCartney a few years back and he was no fan of Angus and was very unsure if the ''penny would ever drop''.  He was questioning his maturity.  Clearly it has and Gus has become a much-loved member of the footy club and also a leader.

The fact that he's a Melbourne premiership player is also important to me.

From a playing perspective I won't be too perturbed if he departs, but from a cultural aspect I hope and suspect he stays.

I think the penny finally dropped for him early last year when he was asked if he wanted to play in the midfield or in finals. I would be interested to see if this newfound 'role player' could translate into the midfield in the form of a two-way running, tackler who is happy dishing off to a player in a better position. Those qualities were absent from his midfield game in the past. Having said that, I'm happy for him to continue his excellent role in the back line or wherever he is required. Happy to acknowledge there is proven midfield quality there.

IMO it would be highly inappropriate and unprofessional for Hamish to reveal this level of detail about Gus without it having an element of pot stiring or perhaps with a wry smile towards the AFL media. Would be worse if Gus agreed for him to speculate seriously about his playing position or financials. Every AFL coach would cringe at that if it were totally serious

One thing is certain, if Gus does leave there will be a lot of tears on this thread!

Times are good at MFC in some ways, when,  for now, we can warmly talk about our agreeable players with fond memories and future dally.

I find it difficult to think the Brayshaw that gave this interview with Garry Lyon after the Grand Final is holding out for money or looking elsewhere to play midfield minutes (particularly at 2mins in).

It's our club Gus.

Yeah, and the same bloke who has parents that take in players every year too. I think that's why there is such an emotional reaction on this thread

Yeah it's not so much being upset it's just hard to reconcile. He would be the last one I would've thought would be holding out but there you go.

Indeed. I can only presume he expected a long/lucrative offer after a premiership year and our original offer was lower/shorter than he thinks is reasonable. It's the only way that he goes from that interview to assessing his options imo

Not if the money we are offering is in the lowball area, Gonzo.  I'm not saying we are lowballing Brayshaw by the way, but it's a possibility

The offer on the table from our club might be seen by Gus and/or his management as unders

Exploring what the market is for a free agent like Gus is due diligence and has to be an expectation.  The club would be expecting that to happen as well.  It's pro sports

And then an offer (or 2) elsewhere could be quite substantial.  Money talks and loyalty has an end point

It must be remembered that a lot of the other teams haven't got all that many good players and they all want to get into contention and they all want to win

So they need talent and are prepared to pay overs for that talent.  Stands to reason

We've done it ourselves (over the years) in order to be a better team

Length of contract might be an issue too

There's a big difference between $4Million over 5 years as opposed to $1.8Million over 3 years

Secured & guaranteed income extending to five years is very appealing

Like Howe going to collywobbles as a forward. Laughable.

Anyone else bothered that Howe left us to play forward cos Roos was playing him in defence, he gets to the pies and Buckley gives him a pre-season up forward, moves him back mid season and all of a sudden it was a Buckley masterstroke?

I am assuming Brayshaw’s management & MFC are hanging on Jackson’s decision. If Jackson goes there is more MFC can offer if the want to in $ and length of contract. The AFL tradition of players not announcing mid season that their off to a new club, unlike the NRL, is stalling negotiations. I think Brayshaw wants to stay and LJ wants to go back home but it won’t be resolved til season end.

As LH pointed out, Viney didn't re-sign until very late (after the season?) so we could assume that he was also exploring free agency

It's pro sports and in other countries all this waiting around is quite normal

I thought he was pretty positive. He stated the really enjoys playing off the half back flanker, loves the playing group. It’s the biggest decision in his playing career and he just wants to make sure he’s covering all bases before he commits.

Done deal - 6 years.  Just announced

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
