Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Angus Brayshaw Re-Signs Until 2028

My gut feel is that Gus is genuinely weighing his options because he does prefer/see himself as an inside midfielder, would like to play with Andy and money is potentially better elsewhere, but he's torn.

It's hard to imagine talks on hold has anything to do with team performance.

I doubt he is going to leave a team he just won a premiership with and could possibly win multiple premierships with

he is going to give that up move his GF across the country so he can play footy with his brother?

He is more likely to accept a big $ offer from the Pies than move to the west

Why do they play footy again for?

How is this even a story?  Premiership Star Angus Brayshaw is playing some of his best footy of this career and I'm sure would feel privileged to be in this position.  He will sign on of course

IMO once a player wins a flag there's three different ways than can go:

- Decide to stick around for more success
- Decide to maximize their added value as a premiership player on the open market
- Decide they've achieved that big thing they wanted to, and now it's about enjoyment (which could be playing with family, being close to family, moving somewhere more low profile etc.)

None of us know which of those Gus is feeling let alone can we gleam anything from very very brief comments inserted into a short news story. (Not saying you're doing that btw, just seems to be a theme in this thread).

Every past player who has won a medal will tell him to chase success - you have the rest of your life to make money and spend it with family.

Hopefully he is surrounded by good people outside of the club.

But that's not what every premiership player has done or will choose to do in the future.

I’m not usually one for speculation on these things but Gus’s answers in the fight MND presser today were a little strange. Petracca and Gawn for example came out and said “I’m Melbourne I’m staying” before their contracts were negotiated. Whereas Gus clearly loves the club, his teammates and the significance of their achievements and success but he was relatively cagey. I think his manager has told him not to say anything so they can get him the best deal, but he is staying. It felt like he wanted to say “I’m staying” as he was almost laughing at the questions but knows he shouldn’t. At least I hope that’s what the slightly weird vibe was..

Not being flippant but how many left the Lions, Cats, Hawks and Tigers during their window?

Put an asterisk on Ablett Jnr and Franklin as they are clearly a unique case.

Players want success more than anything -  it’s what drives them.

I'm not saying most players don't want success, and I have absolutely no idea what Gus' intentions are, but fact is players leave clubs even after flags for reasons other than success.

Recent examples I can think of on the spot...

The Tigers lost Higgins, Markov and Ellis during their successful period. Chol not long after. Possibly more that I can't recall.

Cats lost Tim Kelly and Jordan Clark. Ablett obviously too.

Hawks lost Anderson after winning 3 flags, Buddy and Ellis, not sure who else, going back a while now.

Lions was pre-free agency so not as much movement, and testing my memory but reckon Headland left in the middle of their threepeat.

Why put an asterisk next to players that don't suit your agenda? Of course they also count.

Anyways, the point is - IMO some players have their main priorities shift after winning a flag. Sure, they still want to win, but other factors can affect where they choose to do that.

His brother could always come play for the Demons and that way Gus would be able to stay at the D's and have his brother beside him. Problem solved.

Most of those players you mentioned were after the window. Ablett and Buddy went under ridiculous circumstances that no normal player would ever dream earning probably anywhere between m1.5- 2x what they would earn anywhere else.

Again I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it is a rarity and most will tell you to chase more medals than $$$

No they weren't.

Ellis left Richmond end of 2019. Had just won 2 flags in 3 years.

Higgins, Markov left end of 2020. Tiges had just won their 3rd flag.

Kelly left the Cats end of 2019. They'd just finished top of the ladder. Clark left end of 2021, Cats had played in a GF the previous year and a prelim that year. Ablett left Geelong in between them winning flags.

As mentioned, Jed Anderson left Hawthorn at the end of the year where they'd just won their 3rd flag in a row. Buddy left after a flag and before they'd win two more.

Headland left Brisbane after winning two flags in a row with them.

Sorry, but your statement is just not correct.

Again, nowhere have I said most players won't tell you to chase success, what I said was after a flag the priorities can shift.

I think Angus stays, Jackson leaves. I get homesick vibes from Jackson. A 2-3 year extension would be great before he heads home though!

What happens if he doesn’t sign? If WC finish last, he can’t just walk out on us to the Eagles right?

Depends if you're getting a game or not.

Barring Ellis, none of those Richmond blokes were walk up starts for best 22 anymore. You can add Dan Butler to that list. Ellis went as an RFA. Richmond could have kept him if they matched the GCS offer

Kelly left purely for family reasons - a couple of his kids had medical issues & he & his missus wanted family support in caring for them. Clark was dissatisfied with the amount of games he was getting.

Jed Anderson had been injury riddled & rarely got a game at Hawthorn

Buddy & Ablett - exception circumstances / $$$$$

Headland I can't recall - maybe go home factor or maybe Freo just threw a blank cheque at him

I'm sorry but if Brayshaw wants to go to Freo, I want their first rounder or future first.

That's a "given" Plus some. I really think we are commenting on something that has not happened as yet. Brayshaw in my mind stays. The family are here and he is happy at the D's. Jackson still living in the "I can't believe it World"

Seriously, looking forward for us to get more than the quality 5 year window with the players we have on the list now we need to continue adding quality players each year to our list. It then becomes a difficult journey to recruit exceptional players. Look at who we recruited when we were either last or even third last... Oliver, Tracca, Brayshaw,  May, Viney, ........... the list goes on.....

Nothing you can glean from that and also some education:

”Let’s bring his brother here!”

His brother would demand midfield time immediately he is that good. So goodbye Viney or Petracca if you want someone to actually play a defensive role in there…

And he will cost us a top pick and a good young player so who is leaving?

”We better get blah blah for him!”

He is a Restricted Free Agent which means the best we will get is ND19 unless we are willing to match his salary and keep him and that may break our cap, so set your expectations.

There you go, you’re welcome! 🤗

Buddy did.  Last game for Hawks was his second premiership.  Could have won two more had he stayed.

Some 'lesser lights' at Richmond did similar.

So not a far fetched possibility that Gus or others might.

Edit:  🙄Note to self: read the whole thread before posting as others have mentioned the same.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
