You can add unbelievable endurance.  In his 7 games, he averaged 13.33km per game, which allowing for his 76% game time is better than Ed Langdon and basically equivalent to Sam Walsh who led the league.  He is a gun. In my opinion the thread title should be Hunt v Hibberd v Tomlinson

Thanks for that insight I wasn't aware of. What a pick up Bowey is.

Gus had a very good year but there were still plenty of examples of him getting caught flat footed in congestion. The wingers role off the back of stoppages and then on the outside/defensive side of play allowed him to see the game unfold and react. Personally I think there is still a place in the side for Hunt.  His pace in an asset and in season 2021, I think his intensity, pressure and hardness were also excellent.

Hunt is also one of the long haulers that has been through some leaner times, battled injury, form/lack of selection, but has persevered, fought for a place in the side and for most of 2021 I think had re-established a position for himself in the side, which I think says something about the strength of his character.  He was just so unfortunate to get injured at the time he did.  Along with others, I would love to see him up there on the stage with a premership medallion around his neck.

I think Hibbo may struggle to get a regular game next season over the entire season, but who knows what his ultimate longevity will be.  With a good preseason and management of his body, who knows, some players just keep going and going.  Worst case, I think he'd be a great leader/mentor to our next gen of developing backs at Casey.

The other players who I think should be somewhat discussed in the conversation are:

Joel Smith - showed alot when he came in for a few games at the end of the season and I think with that little bit more experience at the top level could be a genuinely good defensive option.

Trent Rivers - liked his season generally, but think he needs to be able to go to another level in order to hold his place, otherwise I think without substantial injuries, the intense pressure for spots could see him make way to give someone else an opertuity.

 

In general, it wouldn't surprise me if Goody and the coaches are more open to regularly changing players in and out of the team in season 2022.  Last year, while we perfected our game style and built confidence, predictably and stability were order of the day.  Now that we've acheived that, I think we will need to further evolve to make sure we give others a chance at the top level, to build all of depth, flexibility and unpredictability to our opponents.

Joel Smith has all the skills, but there's something that's just NQR about him. I put it down to a lack of game sense. For eg. In one of the finals (v either Geelong or Brisbane), Rivers is streaming through the centre and about to be tackled. Smith is running beside him, ready to receive the handpass and is Rivers' only option of moving the ball forward without the risk of turning it over. As Rivers releases the handpass and is looking toward him, Smith, inexplicably changes his mind and turns away and veers off, I assume to mind his opponent (as Melb are streaming into attack). In my mind he had committed to receiving the handball and it was the only logical play, yet he bizarrely decides to chase his opponent or whatever he was doing. The result was, the handball went to where Smith was supposed to receive it and there was a turnover.

These instances will happen less and less the more games he plays, but when he's not getting games at Casey, he's not getting that experience.

Rivers is set in stone IMO although I think his position will change over time.

I agree, he has all the skills and attributes. I just don’t think he has had enough game continuity. You can never know until it clicks and you can see it but I tend to think he could be an amazing defender. His closing speed is stunning and he can play both tall and short. I’m really interested to see him after a solid block of games

I actually think Tomlinson can come in to take May's lock-down role and May can essentially move over to Hibberd's role on a smaller forward, with Hibberd relegated to depth.

Hunt doesn't use the footy well enough to be best 22 IMO.

Agree re Hunt’s usage - but Langdon, Harmes, ANB and others have worked on their disposal presumably helped by Chocko or Yze : hopefully Jayden can lift this aspect of his game too.

Hunt was very stiff to get injured. In 2021, he defended better, closed down opponents exceptionally well, and teamed with Langdon on many occasions to stream the ball downfield. His ball use improved and I think he provides a little bit of flexibility re he could cover the wing or go forward if needed.

Great to see Hibberd win a flag, but he will be under pressure to retain his spot in 2022, other than I like him guarding  Dusty against the Tigers.

Covid will impact our starting lineup across the year if EPL is any guide, so have 30 plus who can play in the firsts will be more important than in any other season!

A very good view Rogue. Bowey stays as he did nothing wrong and can only improve which is scary. Tomlinson comes in as he is a big body and also has upside. Unfortunately Hibbo goes to Casey however a very useful back up and I would use Hunt as the sub for a few games early as he can play back, wing and forward. Great position to be in.

Smaller medium size players really need to play on the Weightman's  of this world.

we need to be mindful that taller players always go for marks and if it's one fault over the journey ( very rarely evident now I admit) it's that too many of our backs fly to mark and font stay down.

Rorke Smiths first goal of the GF was a great example when all Dees went up.

Lever often flys last man up and would be better to stay down behind the pack.

Unless  you get the ball or hit it out of play you are a liability flying for the mark.

We don't want May Lever Tommo and Petty all flying with Hibbo sometimes also.

Salem Riv and Bowser provide the balance very nicely and necessary in our team defence.

I wouldn't be playing THOSE FOUR!!! all together as we get too tall and no one stays down. Refer Dogs first goal in the Granny!!! 
Either Petty or Tommo should be a no 3 tall defender then Hibbo (orJoel Smith if he earns it  and we need a taller option) plus  the balance including Riv Hunty Salo Bowery to mind mediums and smalls, depending upon the opposition.

Greater balance ensures each player can stick to his role more easily.

This assumes  all players are playing at their best of course!

Going to be exceptionally interesting how pre-season preparations are going to pan out - and what tremendous depth the listings currently offer us as a team to drool over and over until the season proper evolves and settles into a 'routine' line-up. I retain a hope that JSmith will go forward and that Tomlinson - for a variety of reasons - will return to the wing so that the adaptive Brayshaw talent can be mid-fielded once again. Our bench, week to week, is going to be the most impressive in the competition; overall, I'd like to see the GF line-up returned to start the season but there are now alternative opportunities in player rotation that are truly lethal for any of the opposition teams to combat. We really do have the full-board arsenal  to tailor our team to the strengths of all opposition sides on a fixture by fixture basis. Carna Far Ken Demons!
