Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Tonight’s Draft - The Second Crack

Recommended Posts

For most of the early part of last night’s first round of the draft, things were going as planned with the exception of some brief disruptions when a couple of the pick trades were announced. The surprises came later on in the evening with the early selection of players not widely expected to be in the top 20 - players like Leek Alleer (GWS Giants), Angus Sheldrick (Sydney) and Kai Lohmann (Brisbane Lions). A couple of others such as Darcy Wilmot (Brisbane Lions) and Tom Brown (Richmond) only entered the top 20 picture in the last fortnight.

All this leaves us with an interesting array of players ready to be selected in the second round and beyond who have, for the most part of the journey, been considered as probable/possible first rounders. Here are the names that should be prominent early and there’s some quality there -

Rhett Bazzo
Sam Butler
Judson Clarke
Toby Conway
Arlo Draper
Josh Fahey (GWS Giants NGA)
Josh Goater
Blake Howes
Matthew Johnson
Mitch Knevitt
Alastair Lord
Connor Macdonald
Jesse Motlop (Fremantle NGA)
Cooper Murley
Mitch Owens (St KIlda NGA)
Matthew Roberts
Tyler Sonsie
Zac Taylor
Corey Warner
Jack Williams
Marcus Windhagen (St KIlda NGA)

That should well and truly cover Round Two of tonight’s draft and there are another eight more rounds to follow (albeit rounds 9 & 10 are allocated to the Western Bulldogs).

I think Melbourne did well with its first selection and tonight we can expect at least two more although one of them might be father-son pick Taj Woewodin.

The Demons’ next pick is currently scheduled at number 38 so you can safely wait until after 8.30pm before tuning it. The club also holds picks 42 and 50 so it should be a much earlier night than last year’s draft which was wrapped up at close to midnight when someone bearing a close resemblance to Jordan De Goey was sighted stepping out for an exciting evening ahead.

The general consensus seems to be that it is not an overly strong draft at the top end, but that the quality holds up pretty well through the top 40. I'm happy with our first selection, and we should be able to get another quality player with our second selection.

I would imagine there will be a fair amount of pick trading take place through the second round - I wonder if we will look to bundle our next two picks to move up the order if we have our eye on a particular player.

Will be interesting to see if we look to move up the draft order.

I could see us trying to trade down the order, knowing that we will just need enough points late in the draft to take Woewodin.

We have pick 49 and 57, so can't see us using both so may look to trade 49 and 37 to get further down the order.

I wonder if we (and other clubs) will want to hold on to list positions more so than other years given the lack of footy for draftable players in the eastern states.

Unless they are really sure about how to use a pick, it could be a wise choice to save the pick and give the draft pool another 6 months to show something.

We’ll take 3 kids, which is the minimum requirement of the draft rules. Van Rooyen last night, someone with a lock in the 30s and Woe jnr with last pick tonight.

Theres a few good players still available, but not sure any will slide all the way to our pick if it remains as is. Hopefully Taylor and the recruitment team pluck another gem!

@Whispering_Jack has done a great job of updating the draft selection to come after last night's events in the post pinned at the top of the board.  I searched for this elsewhere and I couldn't readily find it.

Our picks have become 38, 42 and 50.  I think we're planning to take 2 more selections and one of them will probably be Taj Woewodin - so I think it would make sense to try to trade these three picks for two with one earlier than 38 and one later than 50.  It's not clear looking at the draft order who would be interested and could do a deal like that.  Maybe one of Geelong, Richmond or North who each have 3 picks before ours, but none of them seem to have picks later with points value in case we need them for TW.  Maybe we could just trade 38 and 42 for one of their picks.  The other option might be to get an extra future pick with 42.

I read somewhere that Carlton could be interested in moving their pick 27 and they don't have another pick until 56 but iirc they were looking for a future pick in return.  We could do it by including a swap of future pics that roughly balances the points and that keeps us within the future pick trading rules (I think...).

Some handy players will still be available at 27 and it gets us in ahead of Richmond's pick 28, 29 and 30 and the double picks that WCE and North have in the 30's.

Edit:  Not sure if Carlton's view of trading #27 has changed since losing Jones.

I suppose we wait and see.

Any idea what our flexibility is here?

I.e. if we get to pick 42 and Taj has not been bid on, are we free to use the pick on another kid? If so, what happens if another club bid on Taj after pick 50? There must be some point where they automatically get to be rookies?

We can use our next available pick which currently is about pick 80 something.

I doubt it will come to that unless we trade out two of our three remain picks.  Even then I think we would ensure we had a pick left in a 'respectable' range to take Taj.

Not exactly sure about the rules but by nominating him as a F/S we should take him in the main draft rather than a subsequent draft.

Pick 50 should come back to 47 after the Saints and GWS use picks on Academy players. The Saints may have to trade a future for one or 2 picks if earlier than expected bids are made.

We have a fair wait from 21 to our pick 38 so i expect we might try to package 38 and 42 to go higher.

I think if no bid comes we will draft him with our last pick anyway, similar to Toby Bedford situation

I expect we'll try trading 38 and 42 for Richmond's pick 30 or something around that mark.

Otherwise I'd imagine 42 might be on the market for a future 3rd next year.

Many of the picks between 11-20 were spent on guys with speed, endurance and skill. It appears there's still a few left who fit that category.

I would be particularly over the moon if we are lucky enough to draft one of these 14 draftees.

media coverage here is horrid, but the second round should be set to 3 minutes per selection, every club says they have their lists pretty much set, get on with it people!  So dull.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
