Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

An outstanding interview.

Great to get some insights into the external mentors/influences for his own growth:  Neil Craig, Mark Viscus (surfing), an interest in the neuro sciences, 'normalising' anxiety: it is ok to be anxious, the 'This is Me' song from the Greatest Showman.  Interestingly it was played in the rooms during the warm up for GF.

It is the most relaxed Goodwin I have heard.  It is great to hear him happy, joking and confident.

In prep for next year and beyond he is going to work over the next 4-5 weeks with the coaches and talk to clubs (inside and outside football) that have won premierships multiple times.

"We sent a flood to drown 'em out" at the end of that GF 3rd quarter!

Totally agree.  Always found him hard to listen to - but I loved this interview.

Just bumping the thread to bring it back up the board and hope DL posters can enjoy listening to it on a relaxing Sunday. I listened whilst enjoying a coffee this morning and enjoyed the whole  30 minutes.  Thanks Demonland for bringing it to us.

Really enjoyed listening to Goodys journey from his Day 1 and building relationships with the players and with the club.

Great insights to the man and the coaching role.  Learnings. New ideas. Fulfillment.  His Mentors.  Team culture.  Leadership.  Ownership by the players.

Love the openness and more relaxed style in Goody’s conversation.   Obviously he’s feeling more content after season 2021 and is definitely in a “happy place”.

Love it that Goody recognised the pain and the raw emotions of the long suffering Dees supporters, and how the premiership has brought such happiness and joy to all Demon members and supporters.

Recruitment.  Goodys echoes what we hear about the MFC (JT) drafting philosophy.  High character and competitive nature … willing to compete every day.

Thank you Goody. Thank you MFC.

We are Proud to Belong.  Absolutely!!!

Love how the demon hierarchy and club weaponised 'the long suffering demons'. This became a strength for us this year.

My wife and I enjoyed the interview this morning and I agree Goody was calm, relaxed and sharing. I was surprised that he had put up a slide at the start of the year - how to prepare to play in a GF. Being interviewed by quality ex- AFL footballers may have also helped him to share his thoughts more openly as well. A real feel good interview and love that he is seeking advice from other successful coaches on how we can continue to enjoy success.💕❤️💙

The idea of playing that Greatest Showman 'This is Me' song for a bunch of young male footballers as a seasonal-theme, by what is essentially a young male coach - including on grand final day - and it having any impact on their motivation to perform is so far-fetched and ridiculous to me that I can only imagine this is some sort of grand post-flag [censored]-take cooked up by Goodwin and the players and delivered with admirable Academy-worthy straight-faces.

Like, seriously? On each side of that scenario, my estimation of Goody either plummets or sky-rockets. It's not about the subject, just the notion that such cheesy lyrics and music could possibly inspire and be promoted by the demographic. Let's not forget the five years of preparation to get to this current point and the off-season buy-in from the players. I doubt the song is related at all, and I'm sure would have been met with mega eye-rolls from a millennial generation.

I absolutely believe it's a genuine story and I guess that says "This is me!" just about as much a your post @Skuitalso says "This is me!"

It's not the song itself. She could have sung "chugga chugga big red car", or yodelled "the barber of Seville" while breakdancing. The point of the story was having the guts to seize the moment, your one opportunity, and make the most of it. And he showed them real footage of someone actually doing that.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the musical tastes of "the demographic" anyway, seeing how it loves "Freed from Desire" so much.

Interesting when they were speaking about grown men brought to tears, this is me.

When I was in the queue to meet the cup yesterday and turned the corner and there it was. When I gave it a hug. Every time I watch the replay (even the third quarter of the prelim). When I hear our coach talk about getting some feedback from champions of different industries on what it takes to back it up and win again. Bang. Bang bang bang. I'm a bloody mess, but a happy one.

Wow Skuit, you are hard. I have no problem seeing how a theme like that could motivate and galvanise a group that needs to believe in itself to break out of a narrative that casts them as unreliable losers. Maybe I'm just soft

No, it wasn't.

In one of the earlier finals Goodwin was asked at one of the qtr breaks, his advice to the players.  His response:  Be yourself.  He was saying to his players bring the best version of yourself.

'This is Me' meant something different to each player.  It was the trigger to help them find that best version during the year.

It is worth listening to the song again.  Inspirational for anyone who has self doubt or wants to bring out the best in themselves.  .

For followers of rugby, in 2016 Eddie Jones produced a presentation to England players on how we will beat the All Blacks and win the 2019 world cup and trained that game plan for 3 years. Come world cup time they smashed the All Blacks (but lost the final to the Springboks). Goody mentions he shares a mentor with Eddie Jones on this interview.

That song would be attached to an overall storyline that Goodwin has used all year. The song I'd imagine would be a very small part. Goodwin himself admitted the need to be himself to bring out his strengths as a coach. I get the impression that he made a conscious decision to do it his way so if he did get the flick there'd be no regrets.

Coaches do weird things to tick those boxes of ethos, pathos and logos in their storytelling. Beveridge used a kids book in 2016, Salty Dog, to help the players overcome their fears.

But I agree with you Skuit. Used in isolation, a song from what is a fairly lame movie wouldn't appeal to 40 guys aged between 18 and 33. Used to provide an emotional overlay to a bigger message and it is a fairly powerful thing.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on here but the RSN interview with Goodwin last Friday was magnificent. He opened up & let a few things out, the one that stuck with me was this;

During the pre season the coaches were down the beach together having a few beers when one of them said they could sing their own version of "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman, Goodwin said as funny as it was he saw a deeper meaning to it & used that as our theme during the year. So much so they played the song during the warm up of the prelim final & all the players & coaches broke out signing the song together.. Great insight to him & the playing group, I recommend having a listen!

Listened to this again this afternoon.  I think being confident and in the right mindset is vital in elite sport. Goody also showed a human side and connection not just with the footy aspects but his own self. Very refreshing and engaging.  Again a very good 30 minutes listening particularly as Reigning Premiers. 🏆👍🏻❤️💙

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
