I posted on here a couple of months ago that McStay was a done deal to the Pies as they want him as a Key Defender to allow Darcy Moore to play Forward. 
I think it will still happen, however, I believe there are now certain influential people seriously questioning their List Management team about the length & value of the offer.

If this news is true, whats the over/unders on the number of  posts in this thread when a rival contract is finally signed.

Very odd he'll play out the year as negotiations are taking place between his management, the club, and potentially another premiership contender.  Huge distraction and as professional as the industry is (spoiler alert: it isnt), its a bit farcial.

I would not believe a word out of Peter Bell and the Freo crowd until Luke Jackson speaks. I think their strategy is to create a dialogue that he is going to WA whether he is or not.

It’s carried on for too long to be good news, I would suggest. As you say, it has only served as a huge distraction, which is affecting only our club negatively. If he doesn’t sign, this will end up dominating the rest of the year.

Always opportunities. If Jackson leaves he does so with our blessing, wish him luck, and onto the next guy. We do invest, and we expect investment, but next up. No time in this business to look back. We’ll be very well compensated for Jackson, and who knows, we might land the next superstar of the league with our pick. Players do get homesick. It’s part of the game.

Look ultimately I wish the kid well. I certainly don’t feel any genuine malice, just find it a bit hmm…soft. And I do think it provides yet another cautionary tale for recruiting youth from the west.

WA’s a funny place. I played in two bands with WA folk at their core, and it seems people from there fall into two pretty distinct categories; “I don’t want to ever live here again” or “I don’t want to ever leave”. The folks in my bands were very much the former, but whenever we played over there we’d meet up with their mates in the latter camp. There was always a bit of a strange underlying tension. There seems to be a lot in those two extra hours on the plane. 
 

But you’re right, it’s part of the game (though I agree with a lot of posters who’ve  pointed out that it seems a bit more prevalent in the AFL than other major international leagues), and yes, one door closes etc etc.

We would want an early pick though. As you simply cannot replace quality talent with a couple speculative late first round picks (which Freo would have). Dealing with WC could get us a reasonable result. Drafting a quality kid could have its advantages. He could be just what our list needs. We seem a little stale this year (record aside). A real quality youngster to push our complacent young talent may be just what we need. To put an optimist spin on it. But realistically never great losing a player of Jackson’s talent.

He wouldn’t cope well in the MLB.

On Monday you could be playing for the Boston Red Sox. By Tuesday you could be traded and uprooted to the San Diego Padres (the furthest thing from Boston) and then suiting up for the Padres by Thursday.

We would want a pick(s) to compensate: The Pick 3 we paid + the return on investment + Premiership Player + Rising Star + The huge inconvenience to our planning/system.

Whoever we deal with needs to be ready to put forward a realistic package.

Realistically we are disappointed to lose Jackson because of potential rather than actual performance.

What does he as an individual owe 'us'? He didn't pick himself to come to the club in the draft.

We've got a premiership due to his (and everyone elses) efforts...*throughout the entire year.

Disagree. We won that game by 80 odd points. He was in the mix of our players but had he not been there it’s very hard to argue we still wouldn’t have won.

My view is that Luke got a Premiership from our system and experience, certainly not the other way around.

I get the frustrating with some with him leaving. 

He played a factor in our drought winning premiership and I'll always thank him for giving me that premiership joy.

It's disappointing that he'll potentially leave, but the way I look at this I think this could be a huge advantage for our playing list moving forward.

I'm a huge believer that if we are to continue to challenge in September consistently you have to find ways to regenerate your list with fresh talent.

1. Starting point is two 1st round picks. At least a top 10 pick in this year's draft as a starting point. No later then top 12. Great opportunity to grab an elite midfielder that may slide. Elite talent like Hewett, Sheezel, Tsatas would genuinely give our midfield mix a whole different dynamic. If we're wanting to go tall then there is Jedd Busslinger from WA who's an elite defender at 197cm or Aaron Cardman who's an elite key forward. I feel like these are much bigger needs for our list moving forward. Jason Taylor has a rich history of nailing first round picks and the thought or him having his hands on this year's talent excites me.

2. Frees up salary space. Simple as that. If we need to target an experienced key position player then like we did with May then we'll have the space for it.
