We are very thin in the ruck so losing LJ will be a kick in guts for the team since we need at  least another 2 ruckmen with Gawn heading to the twilight of his career.

I think we need 4 ruckmen on our list after losing Daw the team was left with part time ruckmen.

Freo won’t give up their players. They have the leverage if Jackson wants to leave. Best we could do would be to seek out Brodie or Acres (both out of contract) as part of a swap plus picks our way. And I’m not sure either even get a gig in our midfield. I hope Jackson stays. I can’t see any workable trade that helps us. We will be bent over. On the upside, if he doesn’t want to be a demon let’s get in someone who does. We don’t actually know if he wants out though. We can only deduce that he doesn’t want in by the fact he hasn’t signed yet.

Rory Lobb certainly put him under some pressure today. If LJ pushes Lobb out of Freo that will put Luke under a lot of pressure to perform straight away.

Hypothetically if he was though, it’d be Brayshaw for Jackson… and a first rounder. Brayshaw is a proven elite midfielder oozing leadership. He currently sits second in the league behind Clarry in the coaches votes. He’s 22 years old.
Jackson is a tall with serious potential at 21 years old. But he’s still mostly potential at this stage.

 Freo won’t let players go. Best we can do is pursue any out of contract players in a trade. Brodie would be an under valued proposition that we could gain some value out of if he were steak knives. It would be especially important if we were losing both Jackson and Brayshaw. Brodie could fill in Brayshaws role at a reduced price and allow us extra funds to chase a gun forward at big $$$

Who would you take from GWS realistically ? I’m assuming it’s not going to be a KPF as Hogan and Himmelberg are not players who would change our make up.

1st rounder & Finn Callaghan? Unless we could get Flynn or Briggs as back up rucks, we wouldn’t be getting our kpf from the GWS list.

Sick and tired of the word of some D/Lers with Jacko as "potential" .

Clearly he will be a better player as he gains more experience but Jacko is a serious player NOW in a premiership winning team. There would only be about 3 to 5 other ruck players in the AFL now that we would consider as a fair replacement for him if he leaves. 

He has helped our team by direct play on the ball change a number of games in his first 50 AFL outings the highlight being the GF last year in the third quarter. 

He is a serious and talented player now and not just "potential " who has a serious X factor with agility, ground ball and extraordinary midfield skills plus the ability to score goals and be a real team player in each game. 

His ruck craft will be stronger and more competitive no doubt once his body matures  but make no mistake we will miss him greatly if he decides to leave NOW (or in the future ). 

Let's hope he stays for a couple more years or all his career for some more flags and success. 

He is a serious player now about 3/4 complete not just a potential star to be dreamed about into the distant future.

You’re overestimating the power Freo have in this deal. Brodie/Acres plus picks (which wouldn’t be top 10 unless they trade players) and Melbourne have the right to force him into the pre-season draft where West Coast will have an early pick. 
 

If his service to the club had been 5+ yrs (like the Dangerfield scenario) I’m sure the club would support him more to make sure he gets to his club of choice but not for a guy just out of his rookie contract when there is another suitor in his hometown.

 

Remember Cerra last yr when Freo suggested that Luke Jackson was the only way that trade would get done (and we quickly pulled out)? Expect a similarly bullish demand from us this time around.

I was thinking that myself. However, if Dogga chooses to leave, surely we'll be doing exactly what they did to us and advise that Freo cant satisfy a trade and that we could only deal with West Coast or let them battle it out between them to come up with the  the most attractive offer. If Dogga wants to go home after only 3 years, it's the least he can do.

It won't be necessary though, when he signs on again.

Suffice to say they can split their first round pick for two first round picks; trade one and use one.

What leverage do tbey have?

If they couldn't satisfy our demands for a trade, we could force Jackson into the preseason draft.

Sure, if we did so we would get nada.

But we don't need any more players who will struggle to get in our best 22.

We have a premiership defender playing at Casey and a boat load of others who are desperate to play senior footy, including some highish draft picks in Laurie and JVR and a fella who polled 11 brownlow votes last season.

So if freo chose to play hard ball and not offer a solid, rolled gold best 22 player then we just say draft time jacko - and enjoy playing at the roos; I hear they have a great program.

In fact you could argue, if Jackson is hell bent on going home and doesn't want to play for the eagles, we have all the leverage as only we can make that happen.

Doesn't matter though as Jackson will stay, thank God (vibe not intel).

Yes, they can split their pick or ask the AFL for special permission. Neither seem very likely this year though.

If I were Melbourne I would take Sean Darcy and a first rounder. We aren't going to give them Young Jackson and go running around for a second ruckman. Its unrealistic but I would want Darcy whos only 24 years old and a first rounder for Jackson.

To split pick 2/3 they need another team to have 2x first round picks in 2022 . Right now, there is not a team that has the required draft hand.

As we would still demand at least a top 10 pick (plus a player and another future first), WCE will need to identify a team that finishes outside of the top 8 (with a top 10 pick) and that team would need to trade for another pick in the first round in order to trade for WC's pick 2/3 - sounds quite convoluted right. The other missing factor is that team that satisfies the above, would need a really good reason to chase pick 2/3 in this years draft - there is no guarantee that will actually happen.

100%. Plus, rumours are Jacko will be either a Demon or Docker anyway, so I personally don't think WC are relevant at all.

Was Adam Cerra out of contract last year when he found his way to Carlton? May be some parallels with Freo placing a high value on him which is why he didn't end up coming to us.

If it was the case he was out of contract, then clearly the destination clubs still find a way to satisfy the current club to ensure the deal happens.

Speculation only (rare for this site) but my guess is Jackson’s mgmt have asked Freo & Melb to see if a suitable trade could be organised - if the two parties are too far apart he’ll sign a short term contract with Melbourne. No way his manager will want to put him into a scenario where there is any talk of Melbourne possibly pushing him to the draft.
