Pretty much. Pearce, Logue, Aish, Acres, Brodie out of contract this year and Ryan, Serong, Tucker, Schultz, Lobb next year. All key parts of their success so far this season. With a group that is buzzing I struggle to see why they would break the bank for Jackson but stranger things have happened I guess..

This whole talk of Fremantle pitching Jackson is like Melbourne pitching Adam Cerra, but Luke Jackson is worth double the price. If Cerra was pick 6 and at the time a mid 3rd rounder which brings it to pick 4ish. Fremantle can't trade their first this year as they traded out their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Even if they could, pick 16-18 is not anywhere close, and next year 16-18 is nowhere close, which means players. Which players combined with a future first adds up to 2 good top ten picks in value? 

Jye Amiss, Hayden Young and a future first? Are they going to be able to pay the price required to bring Jackson in? 

At the end of the day when Gawn is close to retiring we have Jeff White's son Kalani. I doubt Jackson would move to the Eagles. Not impossible for Freo to take Jackson away from us but far fetched they have the collateral to get it done. It is probably only between us and Freo at this point. 

Freo upping the coin to bring Jackson in will mean they have to let go a couple of decent players on good coin to bring him in and have the money to keep their younger brigade in the next contract cycle. They will probably have to trade Lobb and Logue, and maybe plan on Fyffe and Mayne leaving in 1-2 years (or on a tiny salary beyond that), without bringing any free agents in to cover depth. In the short run their depth is weaker, and dropping their overall talent...high risk high reward. Meanwhile Melbourne will have extra cash set aside for Jackson as well as these young prospects and additional pick to further increase our depth. Jackson is a potential superstar and will be missed but strangely enough, in our premiership window we probably get stronger for the next 4 years and Freo weaker in the same period.

you are right, to fit him in and remunerate him far in excess of the dees they lose most of these players and they lose their depth and their talent on field for the next 3-5 years takes a significant hit all to bring in Jackson, while making us potentially stronger in the next 2-4 years...agree stranger things have happened. Lot of pressure for Jackson to be a top 10 player in the future if they do that.

My question is, why would WCE want to sacrifice what would essentially be a range of early round draft pics to get Jackson, when it would mean sacrificing a rebuilt of the team?  Melbourne would want a fair bit of compensation for Dogga, which I'm not convince WCE would be in a position to give up, given the dire state of their list.

Both Freo and WC are just doing the "ground work" required to make a move on Jackson at the end of his next contract with Melbourne, i.e. in 3 years time, or when he hits free agency... Looking to influence Luke's term with Melbourne to map it to their needs and plans.

A 21 year old premiership ruckman, not a bad player to get to start your rebuild.  They still have the bones of a good midfield if they can get fit.  Yeo, Kelly, Shuey still have 3 to 5 years in them.

I can't see how any team would have the currency to get Jackson, a young Ruck /forward,  who has had such an impact at his age, normally you would have to wait 5 years plus to see signs of a big man even just making it at the level, look at Weed as a example... we are still waiting. Jackson is untouchable imo.

It's pretty tough to assess what Jacksons value would be beyond to say i think personally i'd want an established player and picks, i think losing Jackson, having that immediate impact would be beneficial rather than purely just draft picks, especially if he went to Fremantle where the picks are more likely to be in the teens

I think because he's not a free agent we either do a deal or he slides through to the Pre Season Draft where they could take him free. 

Hopefully someone can explain it better but it could be a case of taking what we can get if he decides to go.

Trading Pick 2 to secure a player who is probably going to be better than the player they could draft, especially a gun KPF/Ruck/Utility Mid - would hardly compromise a rebuild. 

Having said that, on the proviso that Lachie Weller was traded for Pick 2, we should be asking for 2 First rounders and an early Second..

He's not a free agent so West Coast will have to trade for him.

In theory they can try and walk him through to the pre-season draft where Jackson can nominate contract terms but this rarely happens. If they finish 17th then they run the risk of North Melbourne claiming him who will definitely have the salary cap space to match.

For him to go through to the PSD and nominate contract terms, Jackson would have to be a willing participant and would essentially be giving the middle finger to the club that drafted him, also his mates, and delivered him a premiership (hopefully two). It won't happen.

If he wants to go home, we'll get a trade done. How favourable it is will remain to be seen. Their first round pick is non negotiable at the very least in my view.

Melbourne's price is going to be high.  Does either WCE or Freo have the currency?  Does Freo have room in their salary cap?  All valid questions.

Exactly, I would think a deal gets done if he decides to go. Very rarely happens these days it was much more of a thing before FA when it was the only way other than trade period for players to switch teams. You could maybe say with the threat of PSD it may give WC a tiny bit of bargaining power than if he were contracted next year for instance but then again we could always deal with another club that gives us a better offer, or he could change his mind and stay. So I'm not too worried about adequate compensation if he goes. We just may not be able to demand the world for him.
