Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sounded that way to me too Sue. Feels like our chances of keeping him are decreasing by the day. Going by the AFL article sounds like Nic Nat is in his ear too.

Its easy to misinterpret what is said in these situations but that was my impression too

We seem to have gone from "we are confident" he will stay to "we are hopeful" - disappointing change in tone

My key takeaway from Goody’s presser is that he’s gone from “confident” to “hopeful” a deal will be sorted out in the not too distant future.

It’s not looking good to be honest. But I’ll still be glad we drafted him and remember LJ’s time at the Dees fondly irrespective of what happens from here.

I picked up on that. Really liked it. Goodwins approach to this is really smart.

I read that he's weighing up how many years he'll sign for

Yeah, no.

Luke is a former pick 3 whose value has only gone up.

His value has gone up but clubs don't get full value when they lose out of contract players.

E.g Cerra was drafted at Pick 5 but Freo only got a pick 6 and future third for him. There will be lots of other examples.

My gut feel is that the club is more confident of re-signing Gus than Jackson. At least that is the sense I got from the way Goody described both of their situations.

Neither one seem like the type of players who would leave for money or even a 'greater role' in the team (i.e. Gus as a permanent mid or Jackson as the number one ruck) - both top blokes who have had a huge impact on our team success and seem to love their team mates.

It will really come down to whether one or both of them want to return home, and it seems that might be more of a factor for Dogga. Fingers crossed we keep em both!

That's exactly what I got out of it.

I felt Goody was more confident in Brayshaw re-signing soon then Jackson.

My read from the press conference is similar to above :- Jacko likely leaving and Gus likely staying.

I also thought Goody conditioned the press to a view of “it will take time”, knowing that if he is leaving there will be nothing to say until after we go back to back.

Hogan was about pick 2 or 3 during the GWS entry parlava. We traded him for 6, I believe

It seems to me Jackson prefers to play in the ruck than up forward, so I'd question why he would go to Freo over the Eagles if he did leave.

At Freo he will probably sit behind Darcy as the number 1 ruck and Darcy is only 23. At the Eagles he would likely take over from Natainui after 1 or 2 seasons max.

He also would have a brighter future as number 1 ruck at the Dees than Freo, so not sure why he would go there.

I guess it depends which way you look it at.

If you take a short term view and we win back to back flags with LJ playing 2 good grand finals, then you'd say the recruitment was a roaring success, we shake his hand and get some good compensation.

If you take a long term view, it's an absolute disaster to lose a pick 3 that the club clearly had a 15 year view of that player being the number one ruck and franchise player of the club, irrespective of what state they're from.

I think Taylor and Co. will avoid WA (and even other states) if we ever get a prized pick again (i.e. - top 5)

No they won't Each case is separate and that's the way it should be.

Very few things in life are 100% one way so decisions are made for reasons at that time.

If Dogga goes and we win this  second flag it can only be described as an unmitigating success.

Dammed if you do dammed if you don't that's Nic Nat vs Wattsy and Dogga vs ?

It won't define JT and his teamif we get 2 flags or not.

He still is the best in the business.

Personally I've always been confident that Gus would stay - not so sure about Jackson

However, the days passing with no commitment is very disconcerting

Don't think Angus is "returning home" as such. He is playing in his home state now. Whenever has the home factor been involved it's with his brother who moved from Vic. To play with Freo.

His father may have lived in WA and I am unsure about the Brayshaws WA an Vic years except that they are a damn fine family and Angus is of that stock as a footballer and person.

Getting to the point where this is now more than a distraction.

Anyway if he goes I want a player and a top 5 draft pick.

If Freo I'd be demanding Darcy assuming Brayshaw is off limits.

If it's the Eagles I want them to facilitate the transfer of Jason Horne Francis from North.

If LJ commands the biggest contract ever we should also be demanding sky high compo

My take is that Gus wants to stay depending on the offer. He jokingly let slip on Gus n Gawny a couple of months ago that he'd have to wait till Jako is signed, meaning his offer will depend on Jako's decision and terms.

If Gus re-signs prior to the finals, my take is that the club knows Jako is leaving, and will give Gus a healthy contract.

Freo won’t have the picks to get LJ unless they bundle a LOT and can move up the draft order. You simply can’t argue he’s worth less than pick 1-5.

Only one WA club really in contention - which I think longer term is a better business decision for Luke. You can’t compare the Eagles and Freo in WA.

If he wants to go home, we get a big draft pick and use it to score a gun key position forward. Makes me wonder about Ben King. We’d have to ask, and ask hard.

Regardless, I love Luke and the way he goes about it, but I think if he goes he’s going to be playing for a team that’s going to struggle for 3-4 years.

The AFL podcast this morning had Freo way ahead of WCE with a 'lure' for Jackson.

Hate to pass on some depressing info.

  • Freo do not have a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year.  Currently they have #15 and #71.
  • For future picks they can only trade out their first round pick if they have a pick in every other round (either their natural pick or a traded in pick).  This reduces flexibility to use any 2023 draft currency.
  • They have signed up every player worth trading for.

Lets hope Jackson's friendship with Nic Nat is strong and Jackson picks WCE should he leave the dees.

Makes sense that Brayshaw's contract offer is dependant on LJ.

I could somewhat see LJ being genuinely undecided, but its got to be looking unlikely he stays having taken this long.

Surely, MFC can wedge both WA clubs, and essentially tell LJ, 'we can trade you to WC for pick 2 and second rounder, if you want to go home, thats fair a reasonable, but unless Freo match it we won't be trading you to them'.

Freo would have to find quality player or two that wants to return to Melb. They have a few.

Lobb was on the trading doco last year wanting to go to Vic, but you'd think he is only worth an early 2 rounder.

Unless Fremantle are willing to offer up Brayshaw or 2 top 10 picks then I would rather send him to North Melbourne.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
