Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Still makes me sad that Robbie Flower wasn't alive to see the Demons break their 57 year Premiership drought. He would of been overjoyed with happiness!

Let's hope the 2021 AFL Premiership cup pays a special visit to the Flower family over the next few weeks. I think it would be very significant for the Melbourne Football Club to do this.

Lastly, I still hope that the MCC considers putting up a statue of Robbie Flower at the MCG. I think it would be very important for this to happen.

Absolutely agree. Please remove the statue of that thug Leigh Matthews and replace it with one of a true footballing god.

Whilst extolling the virtues of the great man, I have a bottle of Robert Flower 2002 signature edition rare old tawny port in a glass and timber display box.  I’m not a port or wine buff and wondering if it would still be drinkable? Advice really appreciated.

Well aware of all the greatness of R Flower

For some reason The Umpires never voted him high enough

We will never know.
But one of the main reasons i take little notice of The Brownlow.
I mean let’s be honest, KB was another who was crucified on Brownlow night

Then they were idiots. Flower was more deserving than any of those

I opened and drank my 1981 Ron Barassi tawny port on premiership night 2021 and it was SWEET. Tawny port keeps well for many years. Yours will be equally sweet I'm sure.

Thank you so much for this video and post. As a new MCC member in the late 70s-early 80s, Robbie's extraordinary skills and clubmanship drew me to follow the Demons (plus an inbred hatred of Richmond, the only co-tenants at the time). Memories of his play have sustained me through to the 2021 premiership.

In answer to some other posts, Robbie polled highly in two Brownlow counts '79 and '84 finishing third each time. I can't remember which year but he missed 6 games at the end of one of these seasons with a broken arm. It is extraordinary that Robbie won only one B&F. I have heard a quip that the MFC voters suffered combined dyslexia in the 3 years that Laurie Fowler won ('75, '79 & '80).

Thanks again

The most graceful, complete player we've had. One of the only players opposition supporters had unequivocal admiration for. Worth going to the footy just to see him live.

Thanks Ash for the video. Every football fan should see this video just to see how the game can be played.

I think it was 84 where the injury cost him the Brownlow.  I remember watching as a little tacker and being upset when Peter Moore went by him and won.  My father (a Geelong man) told me I should be happy another Melbourne player won, but it wasn’t the same.

A reminder of his sublime instinctive skills. He was so natural and so good on both sides. Both feet and both hands. If you didn’t know, you would be hard pressed to determine his natural side. There were no weaknesses.  Pure football genius.

I agree, he was good on both sides, but his kicking foot of choice was his right. Oddly, when he ran and bounced the ball, he would push the ball down with his left hand which is opposite to what would be natural for a right footer.

He was a left hander! Left hand Bowler, Right foot kick ( but equally adept on his left) Right hand Golfer! Weird!

Thanks Ash, I got one of the original dvd copies from Mark and I'd love to have this one as well, is there any way I could download this on to a thumb drive>

There is software programs available that allows you to download videos from youtube.

Another option is I can put all the Melbourne Player Highlight videos I have on USB sticks. Distribute them similar to old Robbie Flower DVD back in the day. Not sure how we do that, cost of USB sticks, postage etc

I do live in Cranbourne East these days, about a 2 min drive from Casey Fields, perhaps if it can wait until next season, people can meet me at Casey fields with their USBs. Not sure how that would work with me getting them back to you, but it's something we can work with.

Player Highlights I could feature would be Flower of course, plus Garry Lyon, David Neitz, Jeff Farmer, David Schwarz, Russell Richards, Aaron Davey, Russell Robertson, Adem Yze, Allen Jakovich and Shaun Smith

Any other players that we think are worthy? I tend to focus on past players

Just throwing out ideas, happy to hear suggestions on players and how we can make this work

I'm not tech savvy and wouldn't have a clue how to download from YouTube.

Just let me know and PM me if you prefer.

It's nostalgic to read of all the memories of the great Robbie Flower.

For what it's worth, I was born in Feb 65 and until a few months ago my only claim to fame was that I was conceived at the time of the last Demons' flag.

Grew up watching Flower and as several have noted, he was often the only reason you went to the footy in the 70's.  I also read with interest the commentary around no Brownlow and only one B&F and this caused me to delve deeper in to my memories.   My recollection is that notwithstanding the Tulip brilliance, he wasn't always the most consistent performer and had his share of "off" days.

My assessment in fact is that Clarry is well on the way to being the best MFC player I've seen in my time following the Dees and Trac may well end up in second place.  Their consistency of performance is a significant part of that assessment.

He was in fact consistently good but because he was so good, we expected more of him than others. If he were in a better team, I think he might have polled better in those days. There were too many games in which we weren't competitive and, as a result, the 3, 2, 1 all went to the opposition.

That may explain the absence of winning a Brownlow WJ, but it doesn't account for only one MFC B&F, the voting for which I've always found to be reliably consistent over my lifetime of watching the MFC.

More Robbie … a blind turn

I was there that day. I’ll never forget that piece of play. If you notice, the ball is exactly between him and the Collingwood player and Robbie runs to the side of it, which enables him to pluck it from out of the path of the Collingwood player. How his summed it all up so quickly is beyond me.

as for the comparisons with some of our present greats – almost impossible, and I say that as a huge fan of  Oliver. Do we really have to choose between them?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
