Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I turned up to the 'comeback' game against Freo at half time- I was at Uni and decided to swing past the MCG on the way home in case we kicked some goals (which was a rarity in those days).. I like to think this is proof i'm the most optimistic Dees supporter ever!

Sadly I had left the Freo game at half time.

Would you believe I saw Fitzroy kick 36.22 against the demons at VFL Park, and only just bailed out at the last minute or I would have seen 186.

Best game - again QF v Blues 2000

First game?  Not sure, but I wish my memory failed me AFTER the 36.22 game, not the games before :)

Worst game 2002 Semi V Adelaide (had we won may have been best), the see-saw of emotions, certain defeat to certain victory to then loose (especially with some very punchable crows supporters nearby), was the angriest I've ever left a game.

Another incredibly memorable game that one. I was also in attendance. The momentum shifts were jus epic, I was convinced we couldn't get rolled at 3QT holding a 22 point lead after trailing 8 goals to 1 at QT.

Probably Travis Johnstone's best ever game, 4 goals, largely from the wing. I can recall his gut running up and down the ground that night, he was completely spent late.

Above that Neita jagged 5 and Robbo 4, almost inconcievable that we'd lose.

But I'd never forget a little known forward for the Crows after that night. Bryan Beinke played 30 odd games for the Crows and never really impressed, but he kicked 2 goals from 4 touches that night, I reckon one from about 90 metres at a critical stage. A real vomit inducing moment if ever there was one.

A long time mate of mine can still get a reaction out of me with that name, bloody Beinke!

I agree with all that, my son cant understand that its one of the best games I've ever been to despite the loss, the comeback was stirring stuff and with TJ being one of my favourites I actually love that game still.

Yeah that's one game that despite being a loss has some fond memories!  I remember plenty of back and forth with the Crows supporters that night..

My first 'away' game was at Windy Hill when Steven Clark had the kick after the siren to win.. We were robbed by a crowd invasion (biased eyes).

First game, Melbourne V Footscray R8 1994 MCG

I don't think it was my first but it's the earliest memborable one. Memorable because it fell on my birthday and we got rolled by 3 points after leading at half time. Lyon kicked 5 goals, Shwarz 3. Bizarelly Illija Grgic kicked 6, seriously, WTF? It became a pattern for the Dees, ordinary players kicking bags of goals against us

Best game, Melbourne v Hawthorn 2018 QF

I was at the EF as well, which was great, but I hold the QF higher. Mostly because i found myself at Pilgrim bar after the game drinking pints with David Neitz, Brad Green, Wrecker Whelan, Paul Hopgood and Guy Rigoni

Worst game Melbourne v Nth Melbourne 1998 Prelim

Bizarrely in those days, we had to play a semi final against St Kilda despite beating Adelaide (comfortably) in a qualifying final in week 1. We'd go on to beat the Saints easily as well before running into a powerful North team who'd had the week off. Despite an admiral effort we'd lose by 5 goals. North would go on to lose the GF to Adelaide by plenty, who has magically turned their fortunes around after copping a belting from us at the G 3 weeks prior.

I think I left angry, as I did believe if we won, we had a chance that year having beaten Brisbane in Brisbane (again coming from 7 goals down) earlier in the year.  1990, 1998 and 2002 were the years I felt we had a real chance, yet didn't make the GF!

First game: Cant remember my first. Vague memories of going out to Waverley when I was a kid but can't pinpoint the game

Worst game: A few to choose from but I reckon round 4 2018 vs Hawthorn, purely because I thought we had turned a corner and then to be outplayed that badly by a declining Hawthorn & I was drenched. Real dog of a day.

Best game: Either round 23 this year or the 2000 QF vs Carlton. The first & only time I've seen my old man cry (tears of joy)

First game I remember being at was round 1, 1988 against Richmond. We flogged them.

Best game I attended would have to be the 2000 QF that last quarter was immense and when the siren went I was going ballistic giving it to the Carlton supporters. 1992 at Vic Park would have to be up there as well, Jakovich with a lazy 7 goals after being benched early. 1989 Queens Birthday against the Hawks at Princes Park another memorable one. Queens Birthday against the Pies where Watts kicked the sealer was awesome too (2016?) Round 1 2005 against the Bombers was memorable too as it was the Broadbridge Memorial game after he died the previous summer.

Worst - I'll leave out the Neeld era and the 2000 GF as that goes without saying - I think the 92 ANZAC Day game against the Bombers where we were up by 41 points at 3/4 time, kicked the 1st goal of the last quarter and then the Bombers kicked 8 goals straight and won by a point. Some other infamous ones were losing by a goal at Windy Hill when Steven Clark had a shot after the siren from 50 to draw the game and he just fell short after the Bombers supporters had already invaded the field (1991?), and thrashings from the Cats & Pies in early 96 or 97. 2004 & 2005 EF's against the Bombers and Cats were bad too.

The first game I can really remember was in 1987 when Jim Stynes ran over the the mark and we lost the preliminary final after the siren.

When we got back to the car we also had a parking ticket. Dad had the good sense to write a letter saying we were related to Jim Stynes from Ireland and didn't understand the parking restrictions. We got off.

My best win is coming this month.

Which one out of interest as both encounters were fantastic wins against North that year.

1) The earlier game where we kicked our equal record score of 180+

2) The later game where Jako kicked 11.8.74

Game in April, early in the season. Only 22,000 and sitting on the old wooden seats in the MCC members.

Worst game/memory was our loss to Hawks in the '87 prelim, a game we're we choked. Bailey Yeats Jackson Eisghold from memory missed gettable shots.

Most amazing win/s have to be v North and v South in the '87 finals with an amazing pro-melbourne crowd on each occasion. Special mention v Geelong last round and the Gawn goal.

@Redleg There's a few here remembering the 1979 game vs Fitzroy as the worst - love to hear your memories of this one?

It was a nightmare. Record defeat at the time. Big Carl was the Coach and was so angry, he made the Team Manager ( me ) address the team after the game.I sat with the boys in the rooms for about 10 minutes and then told them to shower and move on, which we did. What else could you say?

First game - 1989 Elimination Final

Worst game - As tempting as it is to say 186, the game that has given me the most trauma since was Round 6, 1992 vs Essendon when we blew the 46 point lead in the last quarter. Never trusted a lead since.

Best game - 2000 Qualifying Final vs Carlton or either of the winning 2018 finals.

I am trying to jog my memory of my first game and of course went to Demoniwki - cant reach it. Is there a problem?

We needed those results considering how badly we crashed to them the year before.

That 1990 loss to North (130 odd pts) directly cost us the double chance.

A close loss and we would've finished 3rd.

A little know fact was that we played  North when North were in the middle of a 10-2 run, so we got them when they were smoking hot and we were on our obligatory mid season nap.

We did actually beat North in round 1  by 53 points that year.

I remember that as well. To a 9 year old kid, it was an absolute shock to see us beaten that badly.

First dees game live: TBC (subject to Demonwiki coming back on line). I'm thinking 1977? I remember in my first handful of live games was Vic park. I recall getting told off by a pies grandma for my language. Which is weird becuase i was 10 and i never swear at the footy. Or perhaps haven't since.

Not dees related, but the first GF i went to was Hawks v Roos, Snake Baker v Knights 1978. Mike Willisee sat directly in front of me

Worst game, by so far it is really is not funny: 1987 prelim. The 2018 prelim very distant second. Well equal second with the 188 and 200 grand finals

Best game: hard to go past the last round of 1987 at the kennel. But apologies to any number of games - the first two finals in 2018, the wiz kicking 9 in the second half of a game against the pies, this years ANZAC eve game (more from the perspective of having not seen any games in 2020) - the list goes on and on

I take full responsibility for that loss.

Went with crew of mates - three of whom were big dees fans and one was a big bombers fans.

Top of the Ponsford.

We were all pretty well lubricated and i was in my most vociferous, rambunctious form - particularly as the lead grew.

IIRC we kicked the first goal of the last quarter to get it out to a 46 point lead, having dominated the match up till that point. When it sailed through i yelled PERCENTAGE!!!! at the top of my lungs.

Salmon proceeded to destroy us and my mates have never let forget that cry.

I still yell percentage from time to time - buts it's fair to say i'm a lot more conservative in my timing.

First? Gee I don’t know. Possibly somewhere at Waverley in the late 70’s. I’d have to ask my dads friend.

Best? 2018  final against Geelong. The very first time in my life I’d been to a game where we beat cats. Just a wonderful night seeing the MCG in a sea of red and blue.

Worst? Probably our game against Essendon in 1998. We were so bad after playing so well. We were looking so forward to the game and they didn’t even try. No effort whatsoever.

First game - round 1 1983 v Collingwood. Peter Moore and Kelvin Templeton first game for Dees. Lost by 4 points, first time i had seen grown men cry at the football - Melbourne supporter near me had his hands over his eyes at the siren with tears pouring out between his fingers.

Best game - elimination final v Geelong 2018 - never heard a roar like it.

Worst game - 2013 late August v Freo. It was my 60th birthday and my wife had booked a box for me and 12 friends. Food and drinks supplied. Got thrashed in front of a dismal crowd on a cold overcast Melbourne arvo - as bad as it gets.

I've only been to maybe two dozen Demons matches. My first was a 1991 loss vs Adelaide at Footy Park as a kid. Darren Bennet was my favourite player - at least for the next two weeks, until Jackovich completely lit up the comp.

The worst was probably the three-goal effort against Port in 1997 which finally cost Balme his job. The atmosphere was horrible. The Port fans seemed annoyed that we were so bad, and the few Melbourne fans basically started cheering for Port.

Best game; same oval, 2001. Leoncelli kicks the running sealer from an amazing Schwartz tap with four seconds left on the clock (Simon Goodwin was almost the right guy). Some Crows kid might one day consider this year's match-up as one of their best.

First game attended: Round 1 in 1981 at the MCG. An 8 goal loss to Hawthorn in Ron Barassi's first game as coach. I went to all games bar one that year which we played in Sydney against Geelong. I listened to all our games on the radio in 1980, our first full year in Australia.

Best game: Nothing comes close to Round 22 in 1987 at the Western Oval. The preliminary final win against Carlton at Waverley in 1988 was a bit special as was big 'Billy' Bennett kicking six to beat the Bombers at Windy Hill one year.

Worst game: The 1987 preliminary final & 1988 grand final are obvious standouts. One other that sticks in my mind was Round 6 in 1985 at the MCG. The umpire failed to pay three consecutive holding the ball decisions against North along the members wing in the final passage of play late in the last quarter and they squeezed the ball out to Wayne Schimmelbusch to kick the winning goal just before the siren to beat us by a point.

First game: a game in either 96 or 97 against the Bears in Brisbane. Sat next to what seemed the only other Melbourne supporter at the Gabba, and we got smashed.

Best game: probably the comeback against Freo when Wonna went nuts. Was amazing, couldn't talk for 3 days after.

Worst game: I dunno. I've been pretty lucky that the few games I've gone to have mostly been wins. My first game at the G we got done by the tigers, that wasn't much fun.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side.
