Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Just showboating that the first game I went to was the 1987 Elimination Final against the Kangas.

The best game I went to was the 2000 QF against the Blues.

The worst game I went to was the night game against the bombers in 2013 when we got flogged and I was spewed on from the section above!

Yes I am nervous about tomorrow night- thinking this will distract me!

First game I can remember is 94 Semi when Garry kicked 10 to 3 qtr time, I was angry that Balme took him off and didn't understand why he was not going for Fannings record. I was 9.

Best game would be the 00 QF final comeback against Carlton closely followed by the 18 EF against Geelong - mainly because we had waited so long and we were so good.

Worst game - there would be many I have chosen to forget - I remember coming down for the game just before Neeld's nadir against Essendon in 2013. The first game against Port I think and just comparing the teams as they warm up and having this sense of dread: "uh oh"

I still vividly recall just watching the Port mids running through their centre bounce work before the game, and then they ran through similarly during the game...

Going back to the early 90's there was a cold wet day when we played the lowly Bears- we won by 10 points but had to rely on throwing Garry Lyon onto the ball to win.. I think that is the 'worst win' I've witnessed.

I flew over for the 2018 Prelim but I have repressed all memories of that..

First game Rd 11 1988 v West Coast

Best game attended also 2000 QF final against Blues.

Worst game was v Richmond R12 2007. 11 goals down at half time made me leave early and head to the pub.

First game I think was against that saints in 1991 at the G (I think we lost that one , main thing I remember was seeing the old southern stand as a construction site! )

Best ever game was 2000 qualifying final (followed closely by 2018 elimination final win)

Worst loss - hard to say , so many , I didn’t attend 186 at geelong or the Essendon thrashings in 13 , but  I think queens birthday 2013 was a pretty sad state of affairs just collectively rather than the game itself  (wasn’t a lot of hope for us)

Shamefully I can't even remember my first Melbourne game,  early 90s at either Waverly or the G.

Best Game attended would be the elimination final vs Geelong in 2018.

Worst - Backing up what @rpfc said  - Round 2 in 2013 when Essendon pants'd us and then some.

Best game attended elim final 2018 v Geelong (Semi-final v Hawks a close second)

I didn't start following MFC until 2009, when I was only 7. I honestly can't remember the first game I watched because I'm almost certain that it was just one of our typical losses at the time.

The best game attended is easily the 2018 elimination final against Geelong. First time I actually watched them play and win a final.

The worst game attended has to be the one against Essendon early in 2016. That was a game I'd rather forget.

1987 last game of the year against the dogs at the western oval was by far the best as it put us into the finals for the first time in 25 years and the excitement, and tears of joy when we found out we got in , waiting on other results which came through just before the final siren. It was very emotional times.

Worst  was the 87 Prelim when we lost to Hawthorn  after Buckenaras after the siren kick was absolutely devastating.

I got home and mum said “ did you win?”, and I just burst into tears.

Some friends from the Faroe Islands - population circa 50,000 came to watch Geelong play Melbourne at the G. They were staying in Geelong at the time, we got to the MCG - holds a capacity of 100,000, they were blown away.

Melbourne were then blown away. (see the score below)

My friends did not understand why I would put myself through a lifetime of pain - let alone suggest to them the same.

Come along I said,

We'll have a great time I said...

First game - late 50s loss to sainters at Junction Oval. I was so young and knew so little about the game that I got upset because they were kicking goals above the reach of the dees.

Best game - 1964 grand final. Has sustained me for 57 years so far.

Worst game - Queen's Birthday 1965 huge loss to sainters (again) that started our long and tragic decline. Before that loss we were 8-0 and on top of the ladder.

First game attended Rd 7 1988 v Hawthorn at the MCG in a 21 point dees win.

worst game attended Rd 14 1990 v North at the MCG in 127 point dees loss.

Best game attended ANZAC day 1991 v Collingwood at VFL Park. Darren Cuthbertson kicked 7.2 and the dees won by six goals.

Not 100% sure which was the first game I went to, but the first I remember was the 1990 Semi Final against West Coast out at Waverly.

Best game is a tough one as it's all subjective as to what makes it a great game. But for sense of occasion, it's hard to go past our Elimination Final win over Geelong in 2018.

Worst game was Essendon 2013 by the length of the Flemington straight. Never been so angry after a game!

First game. Dees v Tigers. 1974.  I don’t remember much to be honest as a 5 year old but my late father said that was my first game.

Worst game.  Dees v Lions 1979.  190 point defeat.  Sat through the whole game at Waverley.  Loss v Hawks in 1988 GF Avery close second place.

Best game.  Wow. So many. Probably 2000 preliminary final v Kangas. Huge crowd. I was very confident.  Kangas were a tough and mature team but we smashed them. MCG was on fire as Farmer kicked 8 goals. If you want to know how good he was, check out his highlights reel in that game.  Crowd was going nuts.

Many standouts as regards best/worst but a game that really left it’s mark on me was in 2018, us giving Carlton a thrashing they’ll likely never forget.
Not so much the match but what happened afterwards. On my way out of the stands I passed by a man and his two kids aged about eight and 10. Faces painted red and blue, full regalia and both crying. I was like Hey, how was that?! They both looked catatonic. The dad told me, “I’ve been taking them to the footy regularly since they were toddlers. This is the first time they’ve seen us win.”
I was moved to tears. I think about them now and then and really hope they’re enjoying the ride right now. ❤️💙

First game - 1989 Elimination Final

Worst game - As tempting as it is to say 186, the game that has given me the most trauma since was Round 6, 1992 vs Essendon when we blew the 46 point lead in the last quarter. Never trusted a lead since.

Best game - 2000 Qualifying Final vs Carlton or either of the winning 2018 finals.

Worst game.   Port Adelaide in 2007. Aaron Davey was dead set robbed of a free kick in the square in the dying seconds that would have won it.  Close second was a loss to the Eagles at the MCG where I smashed the down arrow on the lift, top level of the ponsford stand

Best game.    EF 2018.  Never seen so many Melbourne supporters

Best Game:  Round 22 V Footscray at the Western Oval in 1987 for the reasons others have spoken about.  I went with my Doggie supporting brother who was giving me grief all day until we steamed home in the last quarter whereupon he spat the dummy and sooked off home before the game ended.

Worst Game:  Round 17 V  Fitzroy at Waverley in 1979 where we were humiliated 36.22.238 to our 6.12.48.  It was the highest ever score recorded at that time and is still the greatest winning margin in VFL/AFL history.  I went with a Fitzroy supporter and he was driving.  There was no choice but to stay until the end.

First Game:  This came at a later age to most of you as I grew up in a country town four to five hours drive from the big smoke.

The occasion was West Portland Under 15s (Premiers!) end of season footy trip and we assembled in the dark for the long bus trip down the highway to Kardinia Park where, as luck would have it, Geelong were drawn to face Melbourne.  It was round 19 of the 1972 season and both teams were out of the running for finals but we were above the Cats on the ladder.

We arrived before the Reserves game had even started and were basically set loose with instructions to make sure to be back at the bus at the end of the game.  I can't imagine such leniency with a group of young boys today.   As we wandered around having a look, some of us took the opportunity to gorge ourselves on hot jam doughnuts from the van at the enticing price of six for twenty cents.  Six!!

I found a good spot on the fence near the players' race and can still recall the thunder of 20 pair of footy boots on concrete and muscly arms glistening with oil as our Seconds ran out to play.  Jim Tilbrook was playing full-back in the magoos that day and, in the near empty ground, his kick-outs were accompanied by an almighty SMACK that resounded around the arena like a rifle shot as the ball left his boot and travelled almost to the centre of the ground.

The details of the main game remain a bit of a blur, but Demonwiki informs me that Greg Parke booted seven goals and that Greg Wells and Paul Callery dominated.  Ray Biffin was reported but, naturally, found not guilty.  We were on fire that day and led by 88 points at 3/4 time before easing up in the last quarter to run out easy 57 point winners.  It was heaven.

On the way home, we stopped at Belmont where we were shouted Kentucky Fried Chicken for tea which was a treat that most of us had never had the opportunity to try before.  Compared to the frenetic card games, joke-telling and general boisterous high spirits and yahooing that went on in the trip down, my team mates were pretty tired and dozed most of the way home.

I was still too thrilled to sleep and even though I was the only Melbourne supporter on the whole bus, it didn't matter.

Gee this thread brings back some memories.

First game - Dees vs South Melbourne, at the G in 1981. We blew a half time lead and lost by 5 goals. Got into the rooms after the game and Michael Seddon signed my record. I was pretty impressed as an 11 yo.

Worst game - There are a few contenders. I'll go for the QB 2014 game when we kicked 3 goals for the game, and Jonesy kicked the first one in the first 45 seconds. The rest of the game was painfully cold and long. I"m sure there's half a dozen worse one's I've mentally blocked out.

Best game - I'll go for Geelong elimination final in 2018, only because my boy sitting next to me never appreciated the level of support for the dees, and I now get great enjoyment watching our success through his eyes. Crowd was amazing that night. Elim final vs WCE in 1988 at Arctic park was pretty good too.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
