I loved it when they asked him about it in his interview. He seemed lost. 

That was a deliberate assault on an umpire even if no hands were raised.

At first I thought a fine but the Afl must suspend him. 

As much as I want him to be in the team to beat Geelong, that type of behaviour just needs to be punished and done in a strong manner. Kids look up to these blokes and its a poor example to try and push an umpire.

If that happened at local or country football level it's at least a year.  Perhaps even 5 years or longer.  It's just not on at any level

Deliberate aggressive intent to a point where the umpire had to get out of the way to avoid greater contact

They'll either come down on him like a ton of bricks or he'll get around 6 weeks

At local & country level that sort of behavior is not tolerated.  Players get sent off for umpire abuse and then have to front a tribunal later on

John Bourke got 10 years for pushing & tripping an umpire in a reserves game at VFL level

Deisel Williams got 9 weeks for a slight shove

Make no mistake, if they can prove intent in a deliberate way, he'll cop a lengthy sentence

It's related to the 10 week ban for the Collingwood player for having a $10 bet.  Zero tolerance for good reasoning

I see Kane Cornes is saying "ask Matt Stevic what he thought because Stevic is a 400 game, 8 GF umpire".  That's exactly why this should not be a factor - a 15 year old rising umpire is not Matt Stevic and players need to understand that respect must be shown.

Greene cannot under any circumstances play again this year, it will be a total joke if he does, three weeks minimum penalty.

Absolutely, and if Stevic is in any way going to be the reason why he gets weeks or gets off then suddenly it's about this person and not about what Greene did, what it looked like as a part of the product of AFL footy, and what example it gives to kids and suburban footy full of nuffies that think you should (not can) treat umpires poorly.

My point is that respect for umps is worse in the AFL than in most other sports. The umps treat the players like school kids, barking orders at them instead of officiating the game.  And players can’t touch the umps coz you’d be a naughty boy. Look at other sports where the ref/ump gets respect. Punishing Minimal incidents like this don’t build respect. 
obviously if he pushed him over or hit the ump that is different 

I believe mutual respect would be gained if the umps treated the players with more respect. Players would return this respect and fans alike. Punishing incidents like this don’t build respect imo

Old world boys club anti umpire brigade. None of us much liked umpires in the good old days when it was also ok to hit an opponent with your elbow,  but this is about lessons for kids coming through the system to respect umpires and encourage young kids to be umpires.

If Green pushed Stevic over or hit him he'd be looking at YEARS not weeks.  Get some perspective.

Way way off track. Nothing to do with respect. We had an AFL umpire doing his job, umpiring, subjected to an unprovoked deliberate bump by a powerful built professional footballer. It was bullying more than anything. Toby Greene the more powerful in a physical sense demonstrating his power. I have more times than I wish to recall seen the same behaviour in bars and clubs.

For some strange reason, I've grown to like Toby Greene but outside of clear accidents e.g umpire backs into player or vice versa, we can't be having to judge the sentiment of the player.

This was easily avoidable and he walked straight through him.

This shouldn't be decided based on anything Matt Stevic says. It was avoidable and there was contact, so there should be a sanction.

Add in Greene's previous umpire contact and it should come back as at least a week.

Talking back to a rugby union referee will get you marched straight down the ground. That's one of the most contentious sports to referee and they get treated with respect. Baseball too, where arguing balls and strikes (ie, disrespecting or 'showing up' the umpire) will get you ejected from the game. The AFL is getting better with its umpire culture, and abuse now results in a pretty automatic 50m penalty (which nobody complains about anymore). 

I was a junior footballer when Williams got 9 weeks. We got the message: Do not touch the umpire!

Playing Rugby Union in my school days, not addressing the ref as 'Sir' could even get you in a bit of strife!

There is no room for this kind of action and the AFL rules means Greene is off to the Tribunal, no MRO needed:

"The AFL tribunal guidelines state that “contact with an umpire that is aggressive, forceful, demonstrative or disrespectful” will be classified as intentional, and therefore the player will be directly referred to the tribunal".

The AFL knows they have to come down hard on Toby, because they won't have any umpires showing up at all manner of competitions next year.

Is it really "respect" for the umpires, or is it appropriate boundaries between the players and the people refereeing them? I don't think rugby players "respect" the umpires so much as they know that where the boundary is, and what will happen quick bloody smart if they go over it.

I don't think the umpires should be talking to the players, calling them by their first names, "coaching" them not to infringe in certain instances ... the players should know the rules of the game they've spent their lives playing. It should be whistles and "play on" only. Like in soccer, where as a true world game there are language issues. Imagine a Danish referee trying to tell a Japanese player "foot on the line ... foot on the line ..."

I also think if the players want to be treated as adults, they should not behave like petulant teenagers, moaning and sooking to the umps (Selwood and Riewoldt spring immediately to mind, they are far from being the only ones).

The AFL have been negligent in the officiating in many areas and they have allowed this to evolve. If they don't clamp down hard on Greene they can look forward to more of the same.

It's very relevant to the Demons.

GWS will be playing us in a fortnight, and he's vital in their chances against us.

He does well against us.

He should get  at LEAST 2 weeks.

What Stevic says is irrelevant.  He might try to ingratiate himself with a star player by saying there was nothing in it.

As posters have pointed out, the crucial point is the possible influence on young players if this isn't taken seriously.

One factor is, however, that the AFL pretty well runs GWS, and wants it to thrive.
