Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Cerra is a good player but we don’t ‘need’ him and we shouldn’t (and we won’t) destabilise the culture by forcing out players who want to stay and are in the 18. If that’s what it takes to get him then we just won’t get him.

Jordon, Sparrow, and Rivers (IMO, he would be an excellent mid) will be pushing that core midfield group next year and that is enough established young talent for us.

Petracca, Oliver, Viney, and Harmes are a tough, balanced core group that is amazingly talented but also has the ability to disrupt other midfield groups (Viney) or run with someone effectively (Harmes). And they are 25, 24, 27, and 25…

And to those that would want to ‘upgrade’ Jack or James - there is a basketball idiom that applies; “there’s only one Sherrin.” We don’t need 4 players hunting the footy, we need our stars to be lifted higher than they can go by themselves through the blocking, and movement, and defensive mindset of the rest of that group.

Good points and it’s a great midfield already. But I do think Cerra would make us better. The midfield group (not just the centre bounce mids) needs more class outside run and elite kicking skills. He could spend time on the wing/HF/HB. When viney and Harmes are too old he’ll be in his prime and go in the middle full time

From Sam McClure article.

While Cerra is said to be extremely impressed with Melbourne’s presentation, he is also excited at the proposition of playing alongside Carlton duo Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh.

Excited to be playing with an overated Cripps?  YEAH NAR wouldnt he rather be Absolutely stoked to be playing with OLIVER ad TRACC😇

Few questions, not just to you, but I've noticed a few trains of thought appearing regularly regarding this potential trade.

- Why wouldn't we look to improve? Adding a talented young player like Cerra onto the wing would improve our side IMO.

- Who said anyone is being 'forced out'? Who's to say a player/s won't request a trade?

- Read around the traps Cerra is best mates with Langdon and also mates with Trac. By all reports he's an upstanding young man. Why would he 'destabilise' our culture? Did it have that effect when we traded Hogan for May? Watts for Fritsch?

The Tigers won a flag then added in Tom Lynch and went on to win two more. They didn't just back themselves to 'lift higher', they actively looked to improve.

I'm not saying sell the farm to get Cerra, and I love our positive vibe atm, but let's not think we're an automatic dynasty before we're even in a grand final.

All for continual improvement - perhaps the note I didn’t play in the post you quote is that if we were to invest anywhere it would be in our forward line so your reference to Lynch is apt.

But our midfield is strong and at the peak of their powers so unless we want to move on from some keys in there - it could be potentially destabilising to get someone in there at the expense of someone who is getting us to where we are right now.

Be remiss not to have a crack.  May just push the price up?

we can’t know what else the club has planned - they just don’t leak!

Correct, you ask the question see if he is interested, ask the question of Fremantle what they want and if it all lines up we do a trade.  If it doesn't we move on to the next target.

Firstly given we have no picks and he is a highly rated young player who was also a high draft pick, we would need to trade something to get something. Who are you willing to trade out which is of roughly equal value. Rivers and picks, Jackson, Pickett? That’s the sort of trade that you would need to do.

If you read my post again you'll notice I say there's always the possibility someone requests a trade. That's potentially how it could happen. Not a matter of forcing someone out or being 'willing' to trade out one of those players, but there's always the chance one wants to go back home.

5 hours ago, Garbo said:

2nd when tigers went after Lynch he was a free agent all he cost was money. A 2nd key fwd was a need of tigers as they only had Riewoldt.

They won the 2017 flag without Lynch. Then they looked to continue to improve and added Lynch and won 2 more. That's the whole point. Teams are always looking to improve, even after they win a flag (which we haven't done yet).

5 hours ago, Garbo said:

3rd our biggest issue all year has been our fwd line if we are going to trade capital for anything it’s got to be another key fwd. Tmac and Ben Brown aren’t a dynasty 1/2.

Not sure I agree. Weideman is leaving due to no opportunity, why would another key forward want to come to us? Also, you can do more than one trade/draft selection per year. There's players leaving, future picks, free agents, the draft.. A lot of options.

5 hours ago, Garbo said:

4th our mid and backs are settled and the equal to best of any team going round. In the mid we already have the best top end talent in trac and Oliver and Gawn, solid experienced roll players in Viney, Harmes and Langdon and Brayshaw. Up coming best 22 talent in Sparrow and Jordan and who ever else we draft. Our balance right now is basically perfect for the next 4-5 years.

Cerra would be a far better wing option than Brayshaw IMO. Always look to improve, that's one way we can this year. Our balance isn't 'perfect'. We haven't won the flag yet mate, settle.

5 hours ago, Garbo said:

In summary Cerra would only marginally add to the mid mix, would cost us talent else where both now and going fwd if we can’t resign players due to cap space and prevent us filling real holes in our list. Just look at pies or swans now, do you want to see the team pulled apart just as it starts. We could easily be them in a year or 2 if we play it wrong.

Come on mate. Seriously. Bit of hyperbole here. If you think trading in one player and potentially losing one who wants to leave will 'tear us apart' then I have some absolutely shocking news about how many list changes there are every year...

Get where you're coming from mate, so just to clarify, I'm only talking about in the circumstance one of the WA boys wants to go home. I'd be shattered to lose any of them, but it does happen more and more these days with players. We've been through it already and managed to turn it into a massive win for us, so never know.

This is what I'm seeing from a few people recently.

Let's win ONE before we start to talk like premierships are a dime a dozen.

Speaking on AFL Tonight, foxfooty.com.au senior reporter Tom Morris said the Dees remained outsiders despite their persistence.

“Melbourne is broadly keen on Adam Cerra and has spoken to him in recent days, but nobody really knows how they’d be able to get a deal done at this point, given their lack of draft picks, given the fact that they want Jack Gunston and given their salary cap is probably quite tight,” he explained.

“That is why Carlton is still the strong favourite for Cerra, but as we know it is silly season, anything can happen and I wouldn’t absolutely rule Melbourne out just yet.”

My first instinct is I don't like it - we're well stocked for mids already - it would just mean someone like Harmes or Sparrow or Brayshaw not getting a game along with Jordan.

But, I get Cerra is a better kind of mid for our mix.

Maybe we don't have all the pieces of the puzzle - maybe we are likely to loose someone in the off season, like Sparrow.

Or how about this for a conspiracy theory: we know Mr Bell will ask for Jackson - which causes Jackson's manager says to Dogga 'hey, if you are thinking of going back home, now is an open window' - we ask for Cerra and their first round pick who we use for Andrew Mac who is the same type of player as Dogga and who we know well. If Dogga doesn't bite, then we know we don't have to worry about his contract extension. If he goes ( and I though I heard he had been coy about his intentions) then we say to Weid - resign b/c it's between you and Daw to have the third tall/backup ruck role for the next two seasons.

Or we are being ruthless ( like we were with discussions with TMac and ANB) and we have a honest conversation with some players we think are surplus to need and encourage some player movement.

It's been a long week waiting for Friday night...

Exactly. This translates to: we are absolutely not dealing with Melbourne again.

Gunston still in the mix? Sounds like some changes in progress.

Problem I see with this is Jacko's trade value will rise significantly in coming years......Obviously I want to keep him, but if he does want to go home, it be much better for us in a couple of years rather than now - in terms of what we could get back.

Not sure he's a free swing Jaded, he's actually still contracted to the Hawks for 2022.

Are you sure? I thought he was out of contract. My mistake.

Either way, a third round pick would suffice. And I doubt we would prioritise him over Cerra.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
