Choosing Carlton isn't exactly the worse case scenario. They've recruited a HIGHLY successful person in Brian Cook and it seems Voss is their man to coach.

Their list isn't exactly bad as some are making out to be. You've got a 10 year key forward in Harry McKay you can build around and then Sam Walsh who's an absolute star in the making. Weitering also is a future All Australian full back and adding Cerra makes them extra competitive. They still need to add a few depth which they have already with Hewett who imo is a better pick up then Saad and Williams purely on the fact he's come from an extremely well drilled culture and we'll give them great two way running in their midfield.

From our perspective I simply cannot see how we please a Fremantle due to their high demand. Jackson and Brayshaw are completely off limits so that just needs to be ruled out.

If Cerra wants a smooth transition home then Cerra for Carltons pick 6 makes sense in a way. 

I have no idea what is on Cerra’s mind but I am happy to debate the quality Of the Carlton list. 

it seems to me they have spent a massive whack of their salary cap on running half backs. Possibly the easiest position to draft for and makes absolutely no sense. How do you fit in Saad, Williams, Docherty, Newman? Honestly, how do you recruit that many developed defenders and still not be able to defend??

 Adding Jack Martin for big coin was another strange choice and their high draft picks besides Walsh are looking very questionable. Both Dow and Petrovski-seton seem to be a fail either in skill or development and it is hard to say what is going on with Cripps. I’m guessing he is carrying an injury and may get back to his old form but for what they must have given him to stay, he has better.

 There are pieces that look good, like Mackay, Walsh and Wietering, but otherwise the list looks like a dogs breakfast to me.

On Voss how many failed coaches have amounted to anything? I can't think of anyone. There is one thing Voss will know and that's how to get a 2 man midfield competitive until preliminary final week.

I said the same about Essendon's list last year and they made the finals this year.

I've learnt not to completely write clubs off before they begin the new season.

While Carlton were woeful at times this year they were still challenging for top 8 in the last 5 weeks of the season.

That's the difference they went for flakey flankers while we went for midfielders. Cook will go down like Jackson one of the best CEO's if he can get Carlton up there. It's not a one year fix due to Cerra it's at least 5 years of pain while they recruit midfielders Hewett will help if he goes there. 

I don't think it's a coincidence that the 2 best midfields in  the comp are playing off in the Grand Final.

Carlton have nice top end talent that’s selling a dummy to people thinking it’s an easy fix. 
 

If Voss does Stephen Bradbury his way into the job, it’s too bad McRae took what Voss really needs, Leppa. 
 

Carlton lack any defensive system, combined with or because of a lack of 2 way runners. That is going to be no easy fix, you reckon Teague wasn’t aware of it the whole time?

They're wasted money on flankers as others have pointed out, instead of hard workers to compliment what they have going for them. Cerra would be a handy addition to their (any) midfield, will he make a big difference there? I’m not convinced at all. 
 

The other problem Carlton have is the teams around them will get better. They finished on the same points as Hawthorn ffs, in a pure development year for the Hawks. Essendon, GWS will hold if not get better, Freo should improve, and they’ll drop points to teams falling down the ladder that are better than them, Richmond, West Coast, Geelong…

Apart from Geelong it’s a pretty vibrant top 8 that may take a fair effort to crack into in the coming years.

Richmond have a tight salary cap don't they? Paying for Lynch, Martin and being a 3 time premiership team.

I know you don't think he will come to us but the best result for him would be to come to us. The best result for Freo would be for him to go to Carltank.

Potentially that's part of it, but Carlton would be in constant contact with him about that, he'd have a pretty good idea who it's going to be, and i'd guess would have for a few days at least. 

it would be hard to be super thrilled about joining Carlton when the other team really keen on you is starting favourites for a grand final and based on their list profile looks a chance to stay there for a while

Depending on how one defines "failed" (e.g. not coaching their first club to a grand final), John Northey, Malcolm Blight, Malthouse and Walls were pretty good on their second time around.

If you had asked me this time last week in regards to Cerra I would have said my hopes of getting him was at 95%. Just finding it extremely hard how to satisfy Freo especially Peter Bell being such a tight [censored]. Unfortunately we just don't have the capital to satisfy Freo.

I'm a bigger fan more anyone then on Cerra. His under 18's year still sticks clear in my mind on how dominant he was. His Eastern Rangers coach Darren Bewick has been on record saying at the time that he can be as equal talented as Petracca who he also coached.

Throw Cerra into our midfield mix next year and it's the best midfield combination in the competition.

Norm Smith is one he got the Swans in the final once which was a fine achievement considering how woeful they were. Northey always left before he got sacked. Blight is another did he get sacked from Geelong? Malthouse situation was a disgrace didn't get sacked until he coached the graveyard. Thank god for Eddie it could have been a Collingwood dynasty if not for his love affair with Buckley. 

Anyone who has been given the flick as a coach is a failed coach IMO. I hold fears for Voss he failed at Brisbane and he's an assistant in a mentally weak club which is Port. Not a great resume I wouldn't be overly confident if I was a Carlton fan.

Just checked on their record against top 8 teams this year.

It was one win and 9 losses.

The one win was against Essendon in May.

The only thing that can be said in their favour is that they had a pretty hard draw as it transpired.  I think only Melbourne (8 - 2) and perhaps one other team played that many top 8 teams.  

I am not convinced about them

I get where you're coming from there, but the club have shown a great ability to get deals done over the last 5 or so years.

I think it will come down to if any of our players wants out for any reason. For example if Sparrow wants back to South Australia, there could be a deal like.

Sparrow to the Crows and Pick 33 to Richmond. 

Crows send Fischer McAsey to Richmond.

Richmond give us Pick 15.

 

We could then potentially do some sort of a deal like our Future 1st Round Pick, Pick 15 and Sam Weideman to Freo for Cerra and Pick 27.

 

But as I said, I think it will hinge on one of our players wanting out.
