Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

You promised you’d let us know. I’m still waiting. 😝

😂

we did it! Gawn after the siren. First ever MFC win with a kick after the siren in 150 years. I’m in shock.
Not going into the office today. I reckon I’ll stay home for a couple of weeks and watch the replay on a loop

My last post on this because I've moved on from this game straight onto Brisbane.

But, the 2018 win against the Eagles was the best win I've witnessed. This game has officially overtaken that now.

Go Dees!

The best win i've ever seen! 44 points down at skilled... are you kidding me! Still on cloud 9.

Highlights outside of the big 3 (Oliver, Gawn, Lever):

- Spargo kicking 2 goals for first time this year... had a run of singles all year.. huge 4th quarter.

- Sparrow exceeded my expectations after costing us dearly with 2 x turnover smothers... took 3 special contested grabs.

- Brayshaw is tough and gutsy. The way he danced out of traffic in the final 2 mins was class.

- Viney. Checkside on the left, 9 tackles and a crucial goal assist. Underrated and born for finals. Selfless in his sacrifice of offense to defend for Trac and Oliver.

- Salem re capturing his early season form. Two good games in a row and building.

All Australian squad announced today...

Petracca, Gawn, Oliver, Lever are locks. May, Fritsch, Salem to make squad.

@SupermercadoI remember you saying after Touhy’s winner that it knocked out the 2005 win as one of our best because the memory of this loss left such a bad feeling about that ground. Is this repaired now?  :)

Hope I remembered that right!

Cripes, I don't know what to think anymore.

All the Viney and Brayshaw bashers have gone VERY VERY quiet!

viney's workrate to lay the shepherd on stanley to allow pickett that little bit more time to deliver the ball over the back of henry to allow fritsch to run into goal was unreal

brayshaw's ability to work back and spoil by creating a 2:1 in our favour across half-back without giving away 'front on contact' was outstanding

work rate from both unbelievably good

Viney kicked a magnificent Banana.

Brayshaw's composure by hand and foot on the wing was magnificent (all be it his handball was short to Oliver, but I was the right option)

Brayshaw's efforts in the last 2 minutes reminded me of Jones little foot tap to salem that sealed our win against West Coast in 2018 to get into the finals.

Agreed

the best part of Viney’s game aside from the usual aggression and smashing tackles was that he took the first simple option most of the time. Made a real difference to his game

Of all the great things Clarrie did on Saturday, one is not getting the praise it deserves… the stacks-on after the siren: boy, did he get some air right there! Hang time was amazing!!!😁

Ok so have watched the replay a few times and am trying to make sense of the second quarter particularly where they kicked 8 consecutive goals.

I’m not prepared to accept that it was an anomaly and for the amount of times Goodwin has said learnings this and learnings that - there has to be a lot of learning there.

2-3 goals were pure @$$ Hawkins and Cameron goal line were massive defensive breakdowns.

There were about 4 goals however that were front of stoppage clearances, which says something about our midfielders. We were absolutely smashing them in Q1 here so not sure how this was able to flip the other way so quickly - then to flip back in Q4. The Lions and Power are a formidable stoppage team so we need to get this right.

I’m also starting to get annoyed with Lingers (shocking I know) but his dinky high , slow kicking into forward 50 are just pointless. I think he needs to either square it up to high HF for somebody else to make the entry or kick it to the top of square if there is not an out number. Usually the ball comes straight back out.

Yep I reckon there were 4 big factors:

1. We didn’t have a winner down back. May was battling with Hawkins, Petty with Cameron. And neither Lever nor Gawn could find any intercepts

2. The centre clearances were terrible. Gawn was getting smashed by Stanley. We couldn’t hold a tackle

3. No winners up forward. We couldn’t retain possession. That changed when Petracca played as a CHF in the second half

4. The backline were panicking and not using the ball. May started switching the ball and opening up space. Suddenly our forwards and mids found room and we got some quick transition.

Definitely agree on Langdon. He’s not getting that extra yard and balancing up. Low and wide or chips out in front are his best go.

I would love to see the full ground vision for that moment of play. He got out of trouble and had a fair bit of time to deliver forward, but I reckon the Cats had a main in the hole, as he didn't just bomb it long, he gave off a (fairly tired) handball to Clarry who crumbed and gave it back to him, then he bombed it long. But that bit of extra time would have given our boys more chance to eliminate the extra man advantage that geelong had...

I'll move on tomorrow, still need a bit more of this!

I remembered on Sat night there was a brief moment in the 3rd quarter where I remembered I think it was the 2011 season where Geelong blew Collingwood out of the water by 90 odd points and trying to tell myself that if that does indeed happen we can still make a GF. I think I even joked in the game day thread about 20 more goals till 186.

So crazy in this sport how you can go from the wide range of emotions and one minute feeling almost embarrassed by what the tean is serving up to elation an hour later. It's crazy.

Great character shown by the players...not sure how much Geelong taking the foot off contributed...but it's still not easy coming from 44 down to win. It takes a certain attitude and hopefully is a sign of a shifting culture for us. Saturday night was one of the best experiences I've had as a Demon fan.

As Petracca said, it's a new season now. I believe our success will be dictated by what we get out of our somewhat inconsistent senior players...if we get a decent baseline in the contest and some pressure applied by these guys when they have an 'off day', i believe our top end might just be good enough to have a real crack at it. A huge amount of work is in front of these guys and they've earned the chance to show everyone what they're made of.

The late call on Anb was odd. Only after the ball had fallen loose and we were off did the whistle come. Suspiciously late. Not to mention how out of context the free was beside the other calls of the game.

Watched the first half of the replay yesterday and the umps really gave a lot of frees in that half to cats that resulted in goals. Most of them were awarded in the middle.

But the three insufficient intents or whatever you call them were way off. Especially Gus's in the last min of the game. What motive could he have had ....we were losing.

Also there were a couple of cats ones that just were not called. Umpiring was very inconsistent and as such very poor.

Also watching the game live I thought we were playing really poorly in that onslaught.

But watching the replay we didn't seem to be doing too much wrong apart from not sticking the odd tackle and poor communication.

Cats just got on top of the centre clearances and got a good run from umps .

Danger was on fire and Hawkins was getting on top. Having dangerfield off in the last qrt for a while really helped us out. He is an awesome player.

Tmac had an absolute shocker but not playing for a while it was understandable. We need him back in some kind of form.

I also thought the umps were not paying htb on cats players going to ground and rolling over on it. Funny I thought no crowd would make a difference with the umps. Maybe it did.😮

Gee Max may have been average early on but wow did he storm home. Full credit to Oliver for kicking true for once. You too Max.

Has any team come from 44 points down at Geelong and win? Not for many years if at all.

But I had hope late in the third quarter.

West Coast came back from 54 points down in the third quarter to win by 3 points at Kardinia Park in R10 2006.

Sydney came back from 45 down at quarter time in 1976 to win.

Given what was on the line and how little time we had to come back, I would say our win was more impressive than both of those.

Funny enough we drew within a kick with ten mins to go in the last.

It seemed in the last five cats were trying to run out the clock.

The irony of Max kicking the winner was supreme but stressful to watch.

He looked nervous.

Not as nervous as me and thousands of other Melbourne fans!

It was the longest, most agonising few seconds of my life until the ball sailed through and the sustained hootin' and hollerin' began in my lounge room.

Some more thoughts after rewatching:

  • Sparrow was fantastic (specifically his mark with 6:01 remaining). Showed his talent, great selection.
  • Kozzy is one of the most accurate field kicks I've ever seen, especially for short <25m kicks. Watch his passes, he has a beautiful kicking action and never misses.
  • Rhys Stanley not marking up Gawn was the only reason Max got a free mark and shot at goal. Huge mistake from Stanley as he obviously thought Lever was going for the shot.
  • Petracca's emotion in his interview on Twitter is pretty emotional stuff. Good luck watching that without shedding a tear.
  • Clarry with 26 contested possessions. TWENTY SIX. Agree with Seraph, I think he is the best midfielder this club has ever had.

During that 20 minute period they didn’t have a single bounce of the ball/drop of the ball/ umpiring decision go against them. They had many umpiring decisions in that period help set up goals too. Every time the ball fell out of a pack it fell right in their hands. We were constantly wrong footed or slipping over. You get a few of them a year and they were able to capitalise on it because they’re good. They won’t do that again all finals and I doubt we will have that happen against us again this year. Even if it happened again they might kick four, but eight was nuts. I would think everyone has been on both ends of it playing sport at any level. Sometimes you get a golden run and sometimes you’re left standing there looking stupid thinking I’m not doing much wrong here.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
