Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Regarding the Harmes & Viney debate, the other point to consider is the effect of having 2 of them!

to have 2 of your key ball-getters both horrible by foot, poor decision-makers, ie holding the ball, fending off, when there was an easy first option:- potentially amplifies the negatives of each individual player..  ie if it was just 1 of them, they probably wouldn’t get the same degree of negative feedback.

I have got my head around Viney playing as a defensive forward with a 5 mins run in the middle each qtr. Also acknowledge Harmes is an effective tagger when there is a match-up....but how do we stop them from thinking they are Dusty Martin and doing too much? If they could just accept that there is a role for them as defensive pressure players who get 10-15 possessions (taking first option, quick handballs etc) then there wouldn’t be a problem.

Are the coaches encouraging them to try and get somewhere closer to trac/Oliver, or are they being told to just play their role? (which would be valued if they simplified things)

Bumping this post AM.

Once we add Viney in with Harmes we are talking 2 semi-heavy inside mids here plus the two big bulls in Tracc & Clarry.  Add to these Gawn at no.4 in clearance averages this season (ahead of Harmes in 5th) then we have this area well covered IMV.

Is this why we often look to throw Kozzie into the mix early to get some mobility / agility happening?  We also often hear the cry for Melk as well but alas, he does show glimpses of some lovely work on the receive out of the middle, but just not consistent enough to hold his place.  Nor does he offer the defensive capability to contain opponents.

I have to concur that Viney and Harmes both need to recognise they are not Pendles et al and just look for the unseflish hand off or find someone short in most cases.  Ok, if they're both coming off an injury free pre-season i think both have the capability of a little more evasiveness / agility and, in the case of Harmes, the fend off on the burst early on in the season.  But when they don't and or playing sore as the season wears on it's a very diff scenario with a change up required as you say.

Still think we are short one silky mostly outside mid at this point.  Casey doesn't seem to offer anyone of this ilk from what i've seen to this point either.  Hopefully this is on our agenda of our recruiting team for 2022.  And someone who is already up and about as the window won't remain open for long.

Finding/trading in this option also frees up Viney to play more time as a defensive forward which i believe he is more suited to from here (somewhere around 65/35 HF/Middle for mine)

For me I reckon bring Jones in for Viney. Tell the old timer this is his chance to get his way back into the team leading into finals. 2 weeks to prove he’s not done with.

Anyone else's MCFSS got them irrationally worried about how much of a bake West Coast is copping in the media this week (e.g. Yeo talking about his dad calling him up to point out how bad he was) and the potential for it to spark them against us?

Yes they pumping themselves for a big show on Monday. But it’s going to be a windy and wet day which they don’t like. I predict a slog out.

Yes, I have seen them do it many times before. The cliff is coming for them but they still have plenty of talent to do a number on teams

I hope the teams MFCSS antennae are up as well. We have to assume that the eagles will come out all guns blazing. I would be disappointed if we allowed them to get the jump on us early. A slow start is not acceptable on Monday

They’ve shown a very soft underbelly this year though so if we can withstand the early onslaught we should be ok.

I'd like to see Jones as well. I'm not sure if he's travelled though. Maybe next week v Adelaide

We all remember what happened the last time at Optus Stadium that Joel Smith was preferred in the backline to another player after very limited games in the AFL as preparation for that game!

No visible improvement to any form at AFL standard since. Now as a forward it might be worth a gamble!!!

I have been saying this for a long while, Joel Smith is a natural forward, like his father before him!

Did Lockhart travel over? His VFL form appears to have improved, might be worth a spot and give Salem a rest.

Hell no! This is not a game to rest players!

A few suggesting Harmesy as an out and I'm not necessarily disagreeing but he and Viney are crucial to our finals chances.

If we have both of those guys in and at their best, our on-ball depth starts to look more like the Doggies.

Whatever we do with Harmes, it has to be with a view to getting him up for finals. My gut feel is you stick with him - he's finding the ball but is maybe lacking some confidence with ball in hand.

Viney hadn't hit his straps, but laid 45 tackles in the 6 games since his return - comfortably the most by any Demon in that period. His loss is significant but obviously something we're fairly used to given his injury history.

In the meantime, we absolutely need James Jordon back to his best to fill the void. With Viney out, it has to be JJ - he's a highly composed player for his age but more importantly, he's been our best tackler across the season.

It's his defensive stuff around the contest that I'm sure the coaching staff are liking. He and Viney are our defensive mids/forwards who are really physical and intimidating. I agree that he has been really untidy with the ball but hopefully that improves in the coming weeks.

I'm not sure if this is a question for linguits or philosophers. But if someone has MFCSS are their worries irrational or rational? Isn't the irrationality the MFCSS rather than the worries?

I expect written answers on my desk by midday tomorrow.

If Bowey continues to step up and play the Salem role, can Salem become the “silky mostly outside mid” we desperately need??

Bailey Laurie for Viney

There could be some merit in bringing Hibberd back in the that back-flankers role to move Laurie further forward to exploit his excellent disposal where Viney used to have a free pass. Then again, swapsies between HBF and the mid role between the two of them (H & L) could create some WC havoc - as both have good-to-very-good foot and hand-passing skills that would assist our forwards even further.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
